EXACTLY the role I've had in mind for him for the past few months.

On twitter I think it was Jorge Sedano who identified this story as coming from Joe Rose, who is buds with Marino but isn't allowed to say it directly so he may have used this NBC 6 guy to get the word out.
It was VERY conspicuous how involved Dan was all week on the practice field and several reporters noted that when they came back into the locker room from the game Dan Marino was there too greeting the players.
This is real, IMO.Phins_Fan_87, SICK and dolfan22 like this. -

Having Marino in the room when we interview Malzhan or Harbaugh next year is a game changer imo...if it comes to that of course

Also I know there will be a lot of confusion and skepticism regarding his role on the team.
There are reasons this role is EXACTLY what I have had in mind for him all along. I don't care what the official title is. It could've been anything from Special Advisor to being placed on the Board as an Executive Vice-Chair (which is not a common position in the business world).
Head coaches come and go. That's the reality of this business. General Managers come and go. Also a reality of this business. When you have to evaluate these people and make changes, or decide not to make changes, who does that? Some teams have a structure in place where a President would do that. I think MANY teams it's just the owner.
Steve Ross will never step down from that position. He wants to make those big decisions, as he says it's part of the fun of being an owner.
The problem is he's got no "football guy" in his owner's council that he can rely upon. Carl Peterson is retired, not a part of this organization, although he has openly hinted he'd like the GM job in the past. I don't know if Ross really feels like he can keep relying on him every time there's a big decision to be made. Matt Higgins? NOT a football guy. Dawn Aponte? They keep going out of their way to make sure people know that they don't really regard her as a football person. Tom Garfinkel? His voice in the council is strengthening but he's still not a football guy.
To me, this is where Marino comes in. Why? He's a MIAMI DOLPHIN. For life. He'll never not be a Dolphin. He's not part of the NFL rat race where guys step away from a position in one organization for a higher position in another organization. He doesn't just want to be back in the NFL. He wants to be back with the Dolphins. He needs to be ABOVE the cyclical, turnover-plagued positions within an NFL front office. He's not qualified to just step in and be the GM. You can't make him the Assistant GM or something like that either, because guess what you end up firing your GM and hiring a new one, the new GM is like uhh no I've got my own guy in mind to be Assistant GM. That's the way it goes.
Dan needs to have involvement with the football aspects of the organization so that he can keep abreast of everything, but he needs to be above that churn. That's what this role is about.
The other advantage of the role from Steve Ross' standpoint is really the strength of Dan's voice in his council will be determined by Ross himself and it'll be based on whether Dan is giving him good advice that makes a lot of sense, or perhaps Ross can tell that Dan is kind of phoning it in and just treating this like semi-retirement. That's a risk with this whole thing.Mile High Fin, Bumrush, Phins_Fan_87 and 14 others like this. -

He's potentially good PR. I think that Marino is less an asset with football people and more of a good will ambassador with the fans. I honestly don't see how or why he'd be a game changer with potential coaching/GM candidates. But he'd be awfully good on local TV & radio selling the new coach/gm/etc. to the public.
Of course this is barring anymore love children and drunken appearances at team functions...... -
Armando Salguero and Barry Jackson have just confirmed the report.
-
Essentially next year if they come to the point of trying to court Jim Harbaugh, the interview table with Harbaugh will have three seats across from it. And those seats will be filled by Steve Ross, Tom Garfinkel and Dan Marino. -
-
If I said Dan was horrible at running the football, would that mean I hate him? Of course not, he was horrible at running the football. Why is this any different?
The bigger question is why all of you think Dan would be good at football personnel decisions?the 23rd likes this. -
Wait. The guy from Maroons? Cool!

Also, we don't even know his role yet. He might not make personnel decisions now. That could be his job In the future after he's gained experience. -
It'll be great if he proves me wrong, but its absurd that people think I hate him just because I think the evidence points to him being bad at this.the 23rd likes this. -

I like the hiring but there is a chance it could bring some problems for the current front office, Marino is foul-tempered and I don't see him meshing with a person like Dawn Aponte who has been a figure of controversy in the front office. Philbin and company better be prepared to get cussed at by Dan.
-
Those weren't shots. If he's there for even partial PR purposes, then major public snafus like a love child and public drunkenness at team functions could be a problem, no?Clark Kent likes this. -
A fact would be something like the Miami Dolphins hired Dan Marino as a special consultant to Stephen Ross. That's something I can actually prove.MrClean likes this. -

Ill tell you one thing. Nobody doubts Dan Marino is a competitor. Having him by your side further proves Ross is very serious in bringing a Championship back to Miami.
Marino keeps the ship pointing in the right direction. Its not so much talent evaluation..its having someone in the front office who hates loosing more then just about anything. -

Well, he wasn't fired from CBS. I'm fairly certain he wanted to move on as well. He was on the show for 12 seasons, after all.I don't see how him thinking the film room was pointless makes him bad at watching film.I'm also fairly certain he quit the Dolphins job for the exact opposite reason. Didn't they promise him certain power and then treat him like crap?

And yes he quit because the job was too much. He was not treated like crap. This was Huizenga. He worshipped Dan.

As for the film room... Didn't he put a 1st round grade on Philip Rivers before Philip's stock exploded?Fin D likes this. -

Yet I have this link saying Marino's contract on CBS ended and they both agreed not to renew it.http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/Dolphi...is-Dismissal-from-NFL-Today-246152241.htmlI'm
I'm aware of that article and what he said at the time. But that was written in 2004. I'm fairly certain reports surfaced afterwards saying the job was not what he expected. I'll look for them. -
-
Also, I'll say again, if he's here to put a better and more respected face on the franchise to the fans, then he'll do that well. I just don't see what his draw will be with potential coaches/gms/etcs. For example, why is he an important piece of the Harbaugh puzzle?

You guys are forgetting the important development here.
