Good interview. But as usual Omar seems....I don't know..clueless or determined to inject his own preconceived notions. I did not get the feeling that Marino seemed "excited" about possibly finishing his career playing for the Steelers. Maybe it was one of those "ya had to be there" occasions.
I did have to laugh at the way he responded to the question could he have played for the Jets.

Nothing could tarnish what Marino did here, but he had the class to not be willing to go to the Jets, no matter what. Class I am disappointed someone else doesn't have, and who's accomplishments will always be tainted because of where he went.

Never knew Cowher wanted him to come to Pitt. I think I woulda actually been OK with that. Especially since I believe he basically got shown the door in Miami. JMHO.

From what I remember, Marino almost finished his career in Minnesota, not Pittsburgh. I think he was all ready to go there, but his wife told him he wasn't going anywhere with his 8? young kids. I also think he had more options then Favre, who I can't see coaching or being a tv guy. Dan made the right decision, and he doesn't need a ring to be the greatest QB ever.

 

There's no doubt both he and Shula were treated poorly and pushed out the door. Unfortunately this changing of the guard also led to the decline of our team.

 

Pittsburgh made the mistake in not drafting Dan in 1983, when they had the chance. I believe they drafted lineman Gabe Rivera who got paralized. Imagine how different things could have been for them, and Dan.

 

For some reason, I thought he wanted to go to Pittsburgh, but Minnesota was the only decent team that wanted him. I think JJ's dumbing down of our offense due to the complete lack of skill players diminished everyone's perception of how much skill Marino still had left.

 

Also if you remember in the mid to late '80's Marino was sort of on the trade block. We almost traded him to Chicago for Mike Singletary and Neal Anderson but the deal fell through. Can't remember which team balked but he could have been a Bear. Even though we didn't win a SB with Dan I'm still glad it never happened.

Sorry gapper, but gotta say, and with all due respect, no...it's not. It's not even close. In war, people die. In football, players get hurt. There's a world difference between the two. A life and death difference, if you will.

If he would have gone anywhere at the end it was going to be Minnesota, but Pittsburgh was a possibility too. Dan would have gone "home".

 

You don't think that Shula's terrible draft classes had anything to do with it?
