"Deadliest Catch" Captain Phil Harris is reportedly in a coma after undergoing 12 hours of surgery Sunday night.
The Seattle-based skipper of the Cornelia Marie, who suffered a stroke on Friday, was placed under a medically-induced coma to reduce brain swelling, TMZ reports

Same dude who had to go to the hospital in one of the seasons. Those guys kill themselves on those boats, even the captains. Little to no sleep, bad diets, chain smoking, stress, etc.

Yup, same guy. Had a massive blood clot move through his lungs last season and almost killed him. They chronicled his diet on the show once, and he practically lived off of Cigarettes and red bull. Something like 5 packs a day of smokes!

Its sad news but as pointed out he his diet when out at sea made health issues inevitable. Its a harsh enough job as it is but when you drink nothing but energy drinks and cigs there is just no way to stay healthy.

I use to shake my head the way Phil treated his body, this stroke is no surprise at all unfortunately.

‘Deadliest Catch’ Captain Phil Harris Dies

Captain Phil Harris, star of Discovery’s ‘Deadliest Catch,’ has died.

Harris, who captained the Cornelia Marie for 18 years, suffered a massive stroke on Jan. 29th while offloading the boat in St. Paul Island, Alaska. After a difficult surgery and a medically induced coma to reduce brain swelling, Harris was reportedly ’showing progress’ over the weekend. A Discovery spokesperson confirmed Captain Phil passed away Tuesday.

Harris’ sons, Jake and Josh, made the announcement:

“It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad — Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.”
