Yeah I agree. I'm not sure how much longer they can keep the show fresh without repeating the same formulas from previous seasons. If this season isn't the last than I bet next season will be. EDIT: I'm not sure why you think Quinn would be 'Dextered', sure Quinn is going to be investigating Dexter and neither guy likes the other very much but unless Quinn kills someone, if Dexter were to kill him on purpose it would go against his code. Remember in season 2 when James Doakes found out about him, Dexter couldn't get rid of him because of his code.
cant wait for this! the dark defender returns not real excited about julia stiles. i hate her face lol i read that there isnt going to be a main adversary this season. hard to top trinity anyway. he really creeped me out
My friend got the first disc of season 4 and I watched it with her; on second viewing Lithgow jumps out even more than when I watched the season in real time. I'm actually looking forward to Julia Stiles as Dexter's love interest. She's a compelling presence onscreen and I think she'll match up well.
When I heard Lithgow was going to be on Dexter I knew he was going to be an awesome baddie. Before he was known for 3rd rock he was known for playing great evil characters. Julia Styles looks a lot like Dexters dead wife. I am sure that will mess with him unless they keep her away from blonde and go another route.
I'm not sure Julia Styles is going to be a love interest. This season takes place literally seconds after last season ends. It would be extremely strange for Dexter to jump from one relationship to another under the circumstances, especially with his emotional issues.
showtime showed a clip that might explain it. kind of wish i didnt see it. not a huge thing but, Spoiler he is about to kill someone and she sees hims through a window. you then see her going down some stairs. she looked pretty ratty. my guess is that the person dexter was killing had some level of control over her. i can then see him keeping her close to him to make sure she wont say anything
some odd spots in the episode, but i had a lump in my throat almost the whole time. i also found myself getting pissed off at dexter for the way he was behaving
Yeah I'm starting to wonder whether this is the last season or not. I'm not sure how Dexter is going to get out of all of this. Plus I'm not sure how many seasons a show like this can last without repeating past storylines etc. This past episode really showed that Dexter has no emotions, I mean did he really think running away would be ok?
I liked the first episode, not really sure where they are going but a good quality episode. I thought Dexter might keep running there for a bit and was going to be disappointed but he came back and I think the season is going to be another good one. I see Quinn stepping into a Doakes type role which has been missing IMHO. Something tells me Deborah puts things together sooner or later and finds out who Dexter really is...maybe.
I loved the Doakes character a lot and was really disappointed they got rid of him. I like Quinn's character a lot too. He's the only one really thinking realistically here. The Quinn/Dexter storyline has a ton of potential and based on the previews I can't wait until Peter Weller gets invovled too. There have already been a lot of rehashing storylines in the past 4 seasons already. The basic structure of each season hasn't changed with 1 main bad guy and them trying to catch him, Dexter finally does at the end and finishes the person off, among other things like Dexter befriends bad guy/girl should take them out but wants to learn why they do things since he has a connection with them, etc. That's why I'm excited for this season because it feels fresh since they aren't going to have a main criminal and it looks like the Quinn/Dexter storyline is going to be the main focus.
The one thing I hated about the episode is how the show went out of their way to show Dexter as EMOTIONLESS ROBOT. up until the 45 min mark any scene with Dexter was cringe inducing. I understand he doesn't feel anything but last night was bad the way they had to show he was emotionless.
Yeah he was almost zombie like. He acted as though he was a zombie stoned out of his mind. His scenes were a little awkward to watch, I don't know if it was good or bad acting on his part.
I was waiting for Debra or someone to just explode on him. I'm surprised more people don't suspect him of killing his wife the way he acted. Any cop would be suspicious if he shows 0 emotion.
i think they are dragging out the suspicion angle. we also have to consider that the past two episodes have occured within just a couple of "real" days. the "no emotion" is tricky. obviously he has emotion. thats just not possible. anger is an emotion. he obviously feels that. he likely feels no empathy and some of those other things he is repressed. was much more before, is less so now
Well don't forget the reason why Batista and Laguerta aren't suspicious of Dexter is because he was with them getting married when Rita was being killed. He does have an alibi during the estimated kill time. Hence why Laquerta was so quick to push the case to the FBI, although I think her relationship with Doakes is a big reason why she doesn't want to truly investigate. Vince isn't a detective so he wouldn't be thinking like that and Deb obviously is too close to the case to be suspicious. I'm not even sure Quinn really thinks Dexter killed Rita but he's curious as to why Trinity would break his 30 year kill cycle tradition to kill a married woman in the bathtub while leaving the baby behind since Trinity's MO is killing a single young lady. Quinn probably wants to find out why Trinity would target Rita. He's the only one thinking like a detective. Again because he's the only one that's not a friend of Dexter so he has less of an emotional attachment to the case.
i agree, im just saying i doubt they would arrest him that quickly unless it was clear that he did it. the fbi still wants to talk to him but appear in no real rush. they know where he is plus we know that dexter will not go to jail for being wrongly convicted of killing rita. that would just be ******ed, not irony inquiries into rita's killing are not about who did it, but the further unravel dexter's secret life (as you know im sure lol) you mention doakes. quinn's nose is sniffing something bad, just like doakes' did. something doesnt sit right in his gut. plus, the guy just wont quit. he just couldnt leave it alone that dexter saw him take that money and that dexter wouldnt accept any overtures from quinn in return...then it turned hostile after quinn looked too close to find some sort of blackmail. now its just personal. i think you are right that deb can only plausibly be kept in the dark to certain things for only so long. its simply not reasonable. interesting dynamic with harry. harry is a limiter to dexter's personal development, but without harry, dexter cannot think rationally actually a few days ago, i wrote a huge post of how i believe that the show is a really a metaphor for the growing pains into maturity of the modern male, but i lost it and its never coming back lol
I don't know if that was 'emotion-less' rather then it was a prolonged state of shock and Dexter not knowing how to process his emotions to the end. To me it was a journey into him slowly processing his guilt and grief.
It's possible. I definitely think it was a mixture of shock, guilt and lack of grief if that makes any sense. I think he was definitely concerned as to why he wasn't feeling much of anything during the episode.
he also has an inability to verbalize his feelings. he almost never even throws deb a bone for what she does for him i think this is where the show will run into problems. a character can only keep this up for so long and remain believable. it would be one thing if he lived in complete isolation and had no connections to anybody
I thought last night's episode was perfect. The first season was built around Dexter being a robot / zombie and through seasons 2-4 Rita made him somewhat human. As soon as she was gone he went back to robot / zombie and it took finally speaking with his "father" that he snapped out and was human again for a minute. Thought his eulogy kind of represented that. Be interesting to see him go between Season 1 Dexter and Seasons 2-4 Dexter all year.
I thought this episode was a little slow but I'm glad the Rita's kids are gone, should make things easier for Dexter to be Dexter again. Not sure where they're going with the Angel storyline. Did anyone else notice the guy Dexter is targeting for his next kill is Dunph from Outside Providence? And yes Quinn is awesome.
I thought last night's episode was a little slow. Hopefully now that Rita's kids are gone and Dexter found a nanny we could get back to 'normal'. I don't think Mitchell son is going to give up Dexter, that's the only way Dexter won't be screwed and tied into the murders. The son was the only one in the family that Dexter was close with and I think he's going to protect him for all the help Dexter did for them. Other than that it will be interesting to see how Julia Styles fits into the show, it looks like it could be another Duokes situation where Dexter keeps her locked up for awhile.
true, though i suppose he could answer honestly w/o realizing what he is giving away. i wonder if dexter is going to be tipped off somehow and reach out to the family first. it would seem strange for him not to inquire to the FBI or someone else if they have any information about how trinity was tied to rita, if only to get a beat on making sure his butt is covered
Well the family is under the protection of the FBI since the FBI still believe Arthur Mitchell is alive and will soon be put into witness protection so it's going to be extremely hard for Dexter to reach out for them.
Dexter is starting to once again repeat past storylines. The Julia Styles storyline looks like it's going to turn into Miguel Prado all over again. I'm really starting to doubt how long this show will be able to continue. Quinn was so close to getting Jonah to ID 'Kyle Butler'. I also think the IAD guy is going after Laquerta and not Batista. Perhaps Laquerta has a few skeletons in her closet, perhaps some of those were sleeping with the right people to get ahead at her job. We already saw her do it in Season 1 or 2.
yeah. i read some season preview that said that the 3rd and 4th episodes were supposed to be mind blowing idk, im not feeling the same tension in the show anymore. i just really dont like julia this episode reminded me that we havent really seen dexter work that much. now its just following him around. there is a lot less of the....trippy feel the show used to have. its more about dexter managing his time than anything. we get it already i really liked the boyd fowler stalk though the show has lost the psychological exploration to a degree. i suppose a consequence of repetition. we only get glimpses of it now
I think this season is kind of boring. In the first season he was a robot and it was interesting to watch him try to keep up with how people are supposed to act. Then Rita and Prado made him come out of his shell and be more human. It was interesting to see him shift between robot and human. Now he is just nothing. He doesn't talk about Rita at ALL and he doesn't have those same robotic misteps that made him so weird in season 1. He is just kinda boring. He doesn't seem to "need" the kills. He doesn't struggle to adapt to society. He is just kinda going through the motions. And so is the show.
He mentioned that he misses Rita to Harrison in last night's episode. I do think it fits his character that he doesn't seem to need the kids or talk about Rita. He's never been open with his emotions nor has he ever liked being tied down to anything. He's always been a loner. I guess if you want to argue after 4 seasons he should at least show some character development in that aspect. But I agree for the most part this season has been kind of slow and boring compared to the others. Of course a lot of that has to do with it not being a nomoral season. Hopefully something new and exciting starts to happen soon, instead of just repeating past storylines with different characters.
I think he said he missed Rita because he needed someone to babysit Harrison. I guess I expected a lot more to be made about he struggled to act sad. Remember the first season the narrator always talked about how he tried to act like he was supposed to act? Like he struggled to meet the expectations of having emotion? He doesn't do that anymore. And he went nuts in the bathroom about Rita but then that was it. I guess that was supposed to be him getting over her - and realistically, stabbing a man to death will probably help the grieving process. I really hope Lumen isn't Prado and Quinn just Doaks. Not impressed with this season.
You're completely right about him saying he missed Rita because he needed someone to babysit Harrison. I forgot the context of that quote.
I don't think Quinn will become the next Doakes. I think he will come up with proof that Dexter is Butler, and Dexter will get tipped off that Quinn is onto him as Butler. Dexter will do some digging of his own, and uncover some major dirt on Quinn. Quinn will confront Dexter about it, and Dexter will admit that he did kill Trinity in retribution for Rita's murder. Then he will reveal what he knows about Quinn. They will both agree to keep the secrets quiet. I also think Lumen will wind up being a new love intrest
