Whats goin on guys, I just had a question and thought on the whole idea of drafting Dez Bryant.
I didn't really get a chance to watch the kid play in college, but from highlight videos that I've see as well as from articles I've read, the kid can play. Whether or not that play transfers to the next level is yet to be seen.
My question is on his character issues. Apparently from what I've heard and read he doesn't seem to be motivated. I think he was reported to be late to practices and games, and that it was expected from his teammates.
I don't recall exactly what it was with Vontae, but I remember similar talks about his character issues and how he would work out with Parcells, Sparano, and Ireland. Not to jump the gun or anything but it looks like either Vontae's "character" issues were just blown out of proportion by the media, or he got a reality check first day of camp.
So considering that Dez Bryant's issues don't seem that sever, is it possible the FO is looking at him in the same respect they saw Vontae? Or did I miss something in terms of what's being said about Dez?
Just my 2 cents, but I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if we drafted Dez. Then again I don't know who to expect to go in the 12th pick...or lower if we trade down.

There were reports that Bryant was late to practices and at least one game check-in time early on. His coach Mike Gundy called him out in the media several times. Then according to Gundy he straightened himself out. Saying that Bryant had matured and had become a much better team mate.
There was also the incident where he lied to the NCAA about going to Deion Sanders house. It wouldn't have been a violation, but he thought it was. The NCAA then suspended him for lying. There was speculation that there had to be more b/c the penalty was so harsh, but most believe it would have come out by now if there were. The most I've heard is speculation that maybe Deion's agent was there but that seems to have been false.
I've heard speculation about whether Bryant wants it enough but never from anybody who knows him or, as far as I can tell, anybody who's ever even met him.
Basically that's it for character concerns about stuff he's done. I know he had a tough upbringing, teen mother, crack addict, multiple kids. She went to jail when he was a teen himself. But I haven't heard of him having any legal trouble or not respecting his coaches or anything.DolfanCole likes this. -
I've read the same things you have about Bryant (and I haven't watched him at all). But, I think you have to "consider the source". I believe in Vontae's case, his coach seemed to refute the reports on his character. If that's true, what is Bryant's coach saying about him? This would be the best indicator IMO. Plus, from what I could tell from Parcells, he could make you motivated, if you know what I mean. If Sparano is a similar coach, and I think he is in this regard, that may help alleviate this issue.

This is all moot, cause the only way we'll land Dez is by trading up, something this regime dislikes doing.

I suspect a lot of the character issue rumors with Vontae were more to do with him being related to Vernon, who was something of a problem child until last year.

IMO there's a very strong chance he makes it to #10. It might take as little as our two #6s to move from #12 to #10. That's a trade up I would do. -

Maybe Dez just needs that disciplinarian type coach like a Mike Singletary and may I say our very own Tony Sparano?
That is of course considering Dez drops to 12.
Anyway, the wait for the draft is agonizing, but even worse is the gap between the draft and pre-season/regular season. Just cause there is almost nothing aside from TC (which I will again be attending) to give us our fix. -

Of course there are exceptions, if the player is heavily into drugs or had big run ins with the law its obviously something they most likely would not consider. -
If Denver deals Marshall (all signs point to them doing so), I don't see how in the world they pass on Bryant. I would be flat out shocked. So I agree with GH, chances are he won't be there fo us at #12. We've been a day late and a dollar short on WR's for as long as I can remember.

I remember thinking that the trifecta wouldn't pick Davis in last year's draft because of his "character issues" and when they announced our pick I was obviously wrong. Therefore, I am not going to jump out and say that we won't pick Bryant if he is still there at #12.
His skill set is something that will be welcomed and will leave the rest of the anaylsis to our FO when it comes to Bryant. Sucks to have to sit and wait in order figure this one out and the fact that we might never know if he is selected before it is our turn sucks even more.
What about this kid D.Thomas from GT? Seems like the kid has all the physical tools you want in a WR. I think my first choice would be OLB in the first round and possible Thomas in the second followed by NT in the third. -
FrontOffice usually has a very different outlook
on the draft than most fans & football pundits
should not be surprised, nor suffer disappoints
@ what they do on draft day, they do their home work
in all probability the safest thing is to say
is the draft will be defensively oriented
as for Speculation in DolFandom: same old, same old... -
I'm coming around on D. Thomas. I don't think he's consistent enough as a receiver but he has some good potential. The problem is that I think several teams are coming to that conclusion as well. I'm starting to see a couple of mocks that have him being selected at #12. I think that's a bit high right now unless re runs great, but the point is that it's becoming less likely that he'll make it to #43. It's looking more and more that if we don't get a WR at #12 then we'll be settling for another Turner like gamble in the fourth or later.
