Haven't heard much about the #1 pick since Oregon's academic schedule prevented him from attending OTAs but it’s nice to see he is present and accounted for. It sounds from the interview like he’s good to go for training camp after the shoulder injury.
I’m very interested to see if the Dolphin’s insistence on including the off-set language into contracts slows the signing process down. Joeckel got almost $14M up front and $21.2M guaranteed.

I can't wait to see how Coyle uses Jordan. He is just so versatile, I expect to see him all over the field. I hope I'm not let down.

The important thing here is that we signed our new kicker already.

I hope Jordan doesn't balk at signing the offset language clause. This is an issue that Jeff and Dawn MUST insist on. This is something that could cost the team as much as 30-40 million in cap space over the next 15 years. He needs to sign it or plan on sitting til he changes his mind.

I hope we sign Leach so we can see how stout Dion J is against the run in TC

Mildly interested in seeing how the offset language issue gets resolved. Anyone know who his agent is? That will probably be the determining factor.

It's really not that hard of a sell. Do you want a check for $13M now and $109K a game for your time with the team or take your chances for a better deal in next year's draft with Clowney in the mix.NCFINFAN likes this. -

My point is, that to the player it is just one year of one contract. But to the team it will be an issue every year for at least one 1st rd pick. If we had a bad run of 1st rd bust and 10 players out of the next 15 years were released and then picked up for the nearly 4 million, the dolphins would have the cumulative loss of 40 million against the cap. Now obviously it isn't going to happen to that extent, but the team has to look at how it affect the cap as a policy, rather than looking at each situation separately. It's sound basic logic like this that intelligent individuals like Jeff and Dawn, who see the big picture, will keep us in a good cap situation going forward.
Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. It has been discussed enough I thought everyone understood why the dolphins were making this such an issue. Bottom line is it is very important to the team, and not too important to the player, unless the player thinks he might be a bust.Last edited: Jul 11, 2013 -
A player that stayed out of football for a whole year would drop at LEAST one rd, most likely several. But just a one rd drop would mean instead of making 20.489 million over his first 4 years(2012 numbers), he would be making a total of 3.9 million over his first 4(2012 numbers). All for a clause that says you don't really believe you will be good enough to still be wanted after your 3rd year. I don't see a player willing to allow his agent to make such a move. Push comes to shove the dolphins have the most leverage and the most reason to make sure they get their way.
True that the team would also lose face, but the player would lose much more. The other side of the coin, is once the dolphins proved they won't budge on the issue, the less trouble they will have down the road. Players will know they aren't getting it.Last edited: Jul 11, 2013cdz12250 likes this. -
Let's try a different perspective. The closest example that comes to mind is Phillip Merling. He was 32nd overall pick in 08. We kept him for 4 years and then decided that he really never lived up to his draft status and decided to go a different direction.
Now imagine if the rules were the way they are now and we still had to pay him the 5 mil even though we cut him. That would be 5 million against our cap that would keep us from signing other players. Is that something that you would want?? I mean this is a guy that went around punching a pregnant woman. But we would have been forced to keep him or pay him 5 million.
Now imagine if that happened several years in a row how it could affect the team. Bottom line is it is a stupid rule that never should have been allowed in the CBA. The offset language is just simple logic that makes things right. A player shouldn't be getting paid by two teams. -

It's really a way for Miami to cover their asses a bit, and in return jordan and agent will get alittle bit more. This isn't nearly the big deal people are making it out to be.
