The Dolphins haven't drafted a QB in the first round since Dan Marino in 1983. It's almost hard to believe, and it's why we've had 15 different starting QBs since Marino left. I'm shocked when I think this franchise hasn't tried to draft a QB in the 1st round since at least 1997 when they knew they needed one behind Marino who was getting older. Look what the Packers did with Rodgers and Favre, they went from one elite QB to the next.
I'm thinking we need to draft a FIRST ROUND QB this year. Enough of the Dolphins trying to find QB gold from the late rounds or other teams trash. QB can mask so many other issues. Look at the Jets, Falcons and Ravens. They along with the Phins were the worst teams in 2007, all of them drafted QBs in the first round, and all 3 are now super bowl contenders. Those 3 QBs have been impressive(Ryan) and getting the job done(Flacco, Sanchez).
I like Henne but if he is hurt are we going to wait another season to see if he can do anything? Hopefully he is back by the time we play the Raiders so we can at least see if he can take us to a 9-7 or 10-6 record. If he took us to 11-5 it would be a miracle and his QB job for the future, there is no way that is happening though, not as long Henning is here. I'd be shocked if we finished 10-6, so 11-5 is pretty much out of reach.
If Henne returns and takes the team to say 10-6, should we still draft a QB in the 1st round? I think we should just in case. You have to be sure at the QB position.
One problem is the coaches seem to put too much on Henne's shoulders when he does play. We all remember the Ravens game, Ronnie had a monster first drive, then the coaches stopped using him. They've been abandoning the run without merit, so it's hard to get a grip on Henne.

Its hard to say now man.. 3 qbs same result, i think the problem might not be the qb at all. You got to give Henne a chance with his hands uncuffed then we'll see. Either way when its our pick we should be getting the best player on the board reguardless of what position it is in the 1st rnd.

no. we draft a speed wide receiver like aj green or we draft a playmaker on defense. maybe we draft a run blocking offensive lineman but that would be my third choice

there are way too many teams with worse QB situations than us, and this isn't a QB heavy draft.

You can never afford to pass on a potential franchise QB...EVER!
Even in our situation, If Henne turns out to be one then you still have a valuable bargaining chip.
I would even argue that we should have taken Brady Quinn in '07. You're at least still guaranteed to pick another one if he's not the guy. LOL, we passed on Aaron Rodgers... -
It's a tough call now that Henne is hurt, better hope he comes back soon so we can see if he can lift this team.
It has to bother people that the organization hasn't drafted a QB in the first round since 1983. That's 28 years come draft time. First round QBs aren't automatic, however it's proven that teams led by 1st round QBs usually win Super Bowls in modern times. Not everyone can be Tom Brady. The Dolphins have a pretty good defense already, and it's much easier to find mid-late round talent in other positions. Sometimes you can even get some good undrafted talent. (Bess, Wake) It's incredibly difficult to do that at the QB position.Pandarilla likes this. -
if there is nobody good enough to warrant it, you dont do it
if henne can play, the question is still up in the air. the season is over, but his future is still flickering. he has been disappointing, but deserves more evaluation imoadamprez2003 likes this. -

No you pretty much get a real offensive coordinator that will play to Henne's strength.
As far as I'm concerned you draft best Offensive linemen available. Its absolutely ridiculous how injured the line is.SICK likes this. -
To be honest Henne hasn't been that bad at all. He's a guy that requires quite a bit of talent around him to succeed but he can do it. If Luck was available sure, but right now I'd rather invest in the defense and make them sickeningly good. Draft another OLB and ILB with a trade down, sign a backup NT, get Odrick back, re-sign Harris and continue to progress. If the defense become a true top five defense that could become a weapon.

If Henne can make something of this season when he returns hopefully soon, then it will make me feel better about the most important position.
Now, we need him to return first, but I heard he was running and he was obviously walking around since he was suited up. -

Yeah right, my 2 year old will have graduated college before this organization takes another QB in the 1st round. For some ****ing reason they think they can get elite QB play for a 2nd round pick year after year and wind up pissing in the wind. Hell Shula had to be convinced to take Marino in the 1st round. No 1st round QB next year period.

We blew our chance to draft a qb in 2008.I doubt we will have many quality options when it is our turn.
I would draft for much needed speed either at wr,rb or te to stretch the field.
For better or worse henne is going to be the qb unless somebody falls in our laps.adamprez2003 likes this. -
In free agency however we have to find at least one interior offensive linemen who can run blockgunn34 likes this. -

the answer to the original question about drafting a qb is hell no... we need to see what Henne can do under a different OC before we cast him aside, which is essentially what you are doing by drafting a qb in round one. Agree with the general consensus that you need to draft more offensive talent early. This offense needs speed all over the place to catchup to what we've done with the D.

Can we draft an OC in the first round next year?
I'm thinking someone like Gary Crowton or Mike Leach. -
only if theres a qb worthy of the first round pick and we have the ammo to get him without killing the rest of our draft.after 3 years of drafting and fa we still need alot of positions replaced next year on both sides of the ball.having a first round qb is not going to matter if we don't replace carey and berger and cognito.still need a speedy reciever,a return specialist a t.e, 2 halfbacks,a qb to replace a done pennington and a partridge in a pear tree and thats just on the o.

Well if we draft a RB, we better be looking at a Chris Johnson/Adrian Peterson type player and keep Ricky to back him up, because it's easier to find normal RBs. Ronnie is going to want too much money probably that he can get elsewhere, watch him end up in Indy or New England.

The problem with this idea is you're targeting a price tag, not a player. Drafting a guy in the first round does not bestow upon him extra quality because you paid up for him. You have to look at the players that are out there and see if any of them are guys you want.
Which is what I do, with Universal Draft.
And I have to tell you, I'm struggling with that position. After Andrew Luck, whom I've been fawning over for like 13-14 months, I'm having a real hard time establishing any kind of comfort level with the other guys at the top, be it Jake Locker, Ryan Mallett, Christian Ponder, Blaine Gabbert or Cam Newton.ToddsPhins, Stringer Bell and Colorado Dolfan like this. -
Yeah you have to make sure it will pay off, but it usually does with certain QBs. Sam Bradford, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco are all paying off. Stafford will pay off if he can get healthy, but he seems to be going in when he's not 100% which isn't a smart thing for the Lions to be doing. Even Sanchez has been paying off this season. And if you don't think Sanchez is better then Henne, then you must think the system around Henne is what is bad. Scoring TDs seems to be Henne's main problem, and the Dolphins have barely been using the run game to help him (see: Jets game where they passed on every play at the goal line twice)

I'd like to take some closer looks at Pat Devlin. Not sure where he'll get drafted though.
