So if you're defining "deep ball" as a completion of at least 40 yards in the air, the fact that the Patriots did that 0.5 times per game in 2014, and the Dolphins did it 0.25 times per game in 2014, makes the Patriots a "contender," and the Dolphins a "non-contender"?
You are arguing some other point. You've got this thing all twisted up. Do some research. You will see that every Superbowl winner in the last 30 years not only had a deep ball in their arsenal, but used it in an important game or moment. You gotta have it. Being able to go deep does not guarantee success but its an essential part of successful team's offensive arsenal. Of all of the playoff teams this season, only one was poor at throwing deep (Carolina) and they didn't have a winning record anyway.
There's is no clear definition of what it is imo, but I would say it is having a threat on the field..cause that's what moves p,ayers out of their comfort zone and their actual space.
Do we, or do we not have a quick strike offense if needed. We don't. Our offensive coordinator admits we don't. Our one weapon who can do that says we don't. I'm not talking about a busted coverage/missed tackle type of TD. I'm talking at any point in the game, the coach calls for a quick strike and they have a chance at executing. We were tops in red zone trips because we don't have a quick strike offense. Lazor said it himself. The best way to improve the red zone problem is not to get there in the first place. And we couldn't do that. At one point very late in the season we only had 1 scoring play longer than 20 yards and that was at 21 yards. To the point WRs were complaining: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-dolphins/fl-dolphins-1218-20141217-story.html So forget this nonsense about 20/30/40 yards in the air. Does that mean 19.5 isn't deep but 20 is? Or 29.5 isn't but 30 is? 39.5/40? That's silly. Is this a quick strike offense or not? It isn't. The Patriots are a poor example. They have the best coach, the best QB, and the best TE, possibly ever at all 3. When we get those 3, perhaps we can talk about it.
If the opposing defense doesn't beleive it is possible to hit a deep ball, then you need to be even MORE superior at execution, accuracy, ball placement and play design to move a ball with a compacted defense and smaller windows and lanes.
Nope. You need mismatches and to throw the ball to the right receiver. TD's do win games, but 1st downs get you there way more often.
Says the fan of the college team with the best deep threat in the country. We had a deep passing game once upon a time......
A question for the real football fans... When do you think was the last time Tannehill saw a cover 0? That's what Wilson beat GB on. Most of the time Tannehill is facing a Cover 2 or even 4. So how can he go deep? And yes, I have every game on DVR. The QB can only take what the defense gives.
Maybe this chart will help. I posted it earlier It does not include 2014 but does include QB's with a min of 150 throws. You have to scroll down because it has the % of times there is an attempt at a deep ball, the completion percentage and yards per attempt. http://regressing.deadspin.com/charts-who-are-the-best-deep-passers-in-the-nfl-1469917039 For the record I believe deep ball is considered over 20 yards So I see it as Tannehill (10%) attempts 1 pass beyond 20 out of every 10 balls thrown. Tannehill completes 40% of those throws for an average of 31.6 yrds??? Can anyone figure out the last chart??
Remember when Wilson looked freaking terrible the whole rest of the game and was bailed out by his defense? No. You don't.
This team doesn't see many cover 4 defenses, and a cover 2 is beatable when you have a Mike Wallace. One issue is ur does take time
So you guys were big Tim Tebow fans, right? Cause that game against GB was exactly what Tebow always did...
Tebow did that every week though, this was literally Wilson's worst game of his career, any RW3 fan will tell you that and he still overcame it to get the victory.
Theres a simple reason why Wilson was facing cover 0 in the NFCG and it has nothing to do with randomness, and very easy to understand why Ryan doesn't get the same look, Wilson the only qb in football that would be facing that in that situation and its very specific as to why, so before you go around insulting the board maybe you should give a better reason why he was facing cover 0.
you know this isn't true, he didn't win because the personnel dept for the Dolphins during those years sucked, they lucked into Marino, had no defense, no running game, no great tight ends, all he really had was duper and Clayton.
What I wrote is true, you just didn't understand my point. The poster I was replying to, has made it known in every goddamn thread that Tannehill is the reason we suck, blah, blah, blah. I was merely pointing out to him that when we have a great a QB we still didn't win anything....because we lacked other phases of the game. Which is the same problem now. Our defense screwed us more this year than our QB did. Our QB is not the problem on this team.
Do you feel the need to make an excuse for every Russell Wilson positive? Is it some kind of compulsive disorder? If Tannehill had completed that ball we'd be hearing: "Great read!!!!" "Can't hit a deep ball eh?!?!?!!" "Isn't clutch eh?!?!?!" "Tannehill is a winner!!!!"
You know I meant Duper when referring to outrageous 40 time don't you? Really, really curious to see what Devin runs. It will play a huge part in his draft stock. P.S. I hope it's blazing fast.
More referencing all the Wilson gushing after that game. He was, quite literally, Tim Tebow that game. I know he plays at a much higher level, generally, than Tebow.
Actually, I think it's pretty silly to have him facing that coverage, especially in OT. It would have been better to spy him, and leave a decent coverage downfield, especially given how he'd been throwing all game.
What is your point? A 15-1 team beat a 14-2 team in the Super Bowl. Do you remember what it was like to be 14-2 or even 12-4? It was pretty damn cool. I don't get why you would ever downplay that era of our team. One of our best teams ever.
