Well, to be clear here, I was not a fan of Tannehill's game.
I did not think he had enough experience to merit being the #8 overall. That said I'm glad they drafted him as the two positions Dolfans are mental about are Wr and Qb.
So does drafting him change your view of the job Jeff Ireland has done?
Ireland+Tannehill, change your mind?

It all does come down to how the draft picks perform. I do have to say I am enjoying the fact he is really shedding the "Parcells" way without being insulting to his former boss.
I also like the fact in this draft that despite really aiming for value picks he still put his *** on the line by taking a couple risks with Tanny and Vernon. It's a nice mix of safe value + risk.DrAstroZoom likes this. -
I don't know how to answer this question, I thought there was a better Qb on the board, and could of been gotten with an extra pick, so my perception hasn't changed, it is what it is, Iam just hoping that mike Sherman and company prove that what I see is correctable and can improve..Personally I don't think Ireland had a choice.
-
If anyone of the guys he drafted turns out to have a prostitute mom, then we know Ireland failed to do his job. For now, it is too early to tell.

I DO like the fact that finally, Ireland had to push in on a Qb and had no real option for a 2nd rd half step, if Thill fails, that falls on him and will probably cost him his job. I've felt for to long he has hidden behind Parcells skirt so to speak and I like the fact that he is his own GM now. -
Personally, no. But I'm glad he made the pick. I look at a guy like Dalton last year and feel like he should be a dolphin. I know we would have had to trade up to get him but if we had been more aggressive in the past we wouldn't be waiting until 2013 to finally have a franchise qb. And that's being optimistic that tannehill pans out.

I don't see how you can watch game film of this kid and not be excitied. He can make all the throws, he's athletic, throws on the run etc. The only problems I saw with him were experienced based. Failing to see open WRs and checking down, missing some underneath coverages and throwing picks (happens to best of players) People say he locks on to one WR but in reality it's him looking at his first read and sometimes not shifting the coverage with his eyes. I didn't see a lot of balls thrown into forced coverage but his eye movement could be better.
He also played with a horrible group of WRs. over 70 drops, some of the picks in big games bounced off hands or WRs fell down etc. Was he a reach at 8? Yeah a little bit but if nobody would trade down whats the point? grab the guy you want because odds are we won't finish bad enough to land barkley next year and he's not worth trading your whole future for like andrew luck is.Tin Indian likes this. -

I like the pick a lot, its who I wanted so I really like what Ireland did. We also didn't get snookered into a trade up, we got him by standing fast which was a huge plus. Ireland also avoided any pre draft negativity and seems to be handling the off season much better. Maybe he just needed to get out from under Parcells fat shadow who knows. I do think that if Parcells was running the team we would not have drafted Tannehill, just a feeling I don't have any facts but from Parcells MO he would have avoided a inexperienced Qb like Tannehill that early. To me Ireland needs to get the stink of Parcells off of him and this draft was a move forward from that IMHO.

I was never down on him. I have always felt that until last season he didn't have much if any say in acquisitions. He was basically GM in waiting with the title being used to keep him away from other teams and take him from Dallas. Last season he made some nice moves like getting Bush cheap and drafting Pouncey. Plus a lot of people here are high on Gates as well and believe he could be a good player for us.

To judge Jeff Ireland and his work apart from who was teaching/coaching does not give a complete picture of the picks he made or even the picks that he/Tuna made.
Some quality players fell thru the cracks because of a lack of proper coaching imo. Chad Henne being the most glaring waste of all. While I was not a fan of Henne at the same time the coaching staff tried to make him that which he was not .... Penny II, the constant rollover of the O line falls directly on Tony Sparano's shoulders thus how can one really judge Ireland against that negative coaching background?
Last year was the, very, slow start leading up to what we now see with a new coaching staff and imo a very coheasive plan of action between Jeff and them.
Plan your work and work your plan, I'm very upbeat about this coming season. Therefore I didn't vote and all the talk about who did what concerning the Tannehill pick don't mean jack poop, he's on board. Will it work, only if everyone in that building is on the same page, right down to the janitor!
P.S. Yes I like Jeff Ireland! -
None of your choices in the poll really fit for me. I liked Ireland as a GM before and I still do. I think he is a very good talent evaluator. I was most impressed this draft with how he stuck to his board rather than reach for need. Also liked how he moved down a couple of times and gained a pick on one trade down that helped him move up.
-
I think that the draft buys him some time. Only the most unrealistic expect to see Tannehill on the field in 2012, and Martin should step in and start right away at RT, so unless the team completely implodes this season, we'll likely see the status quo again at this point next year. Then, after another round of free agency and another draft, we should get to see Tannehill and some of the other players from this draft perform on the field in 2013. If they stink then, Ireland may get the boot.
-
I don't see what drafting Tannehill has to do with Ireland. I'm going to look at the other picks and see how they work out for the team. Tannehill was a "safe" pick to me. Not necessarily in the sense that he will work out but because that was who the fans wanted. It's easier to give the people what they want then to go on your own instincts.
Ireland has been very average in his drafting up until now as GM. I'll have to see how these picks work out in the next year or two before I can make a decision on if I think he should stay as GM. -
Not really. While I am hopeful Tannehill will be a success at the NFL level, I wasn't too keen on taking him with the eight pick in the draft. I certainly understand the need to find a QB for the future and Tannehill may or may not be this player, but I will wait until after the 2012 season to pass judgement on the job Ireland is doing as the teams GM.
I have been a big proponent of firing Ireland and while right now I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on this draft. If the Doilphins once again finish below 500 next year, as I think they will, I believe that there will be many more fans who join the, "dump Ireland " bandwagon. -
This shows Ireland can adapt. So it definitely helps my perception of him.
Bill Parcells would not have made Tannehill, Martin, Engew or Miller Miami Dolphins. These are highly athletic players, not the big lumbering corn fed players of the past.
So yes, Tannehill and this draft does helped his perception with me, as I didn't know if he would adapt or not. -
One interesting confirmation came out in his post draft conference and that was the admission that these past 2 drafts were the ones where he had "Full Control" over the draft. It also showed in his picks. There were a lot of picks I don't see happening with Parcells around.
-
It's still too early to tell for me, but I have no complaints about the picks he made.
-
Michael Egnew is also not your typical Parcells pick at tight end, as he is really not an in line guy at all. This is a move oriented tight end that threatens the defense with speed.
Lamar Miller is just a tremendous value pick, and considering that Reggie is only under contract for one more year, he could be the replacement in a year.
Josh Kaddu is probably a special teams/nick sub package guy initially, but this guy is an aggressive pursuit linebacker who has some pass rush potential.
We have some interesting guys at wide receiver coming in as well. Greg Cunningham, Rishard Matthews, Jeff Fuller, and Derek Moye are all guys who have been very productive. -
I don't care for the Vernon or Kaddu picks tbh, I like the fact they upgraded team speed but thought there were better prospects still on the board.
As for the bargain bin guys, have to think Ireland saw the success Bess has had and did not want to "reach" for a wr when he felt he can find talent in the later rds or as UDFA's. I like Fuller a lot, and think Cunningham has a bit of Chris Carter in his game, but still I don't like the idea of always going cheap at Wr as imo it hurts your Qb.
I think it is funny that Cunningham is so universally devalued, he scored 12 Td's ala Carter but is thought to be to slow/not sudden enough..but all he does is catch Td's..:D -
I was always bothered by the fan perception that Ireland wouldn't draft a QB high. There were reports that he wanted Ryan that first year and we know he never had final say. IMO that perception was fueled by those 4years when he didn't have final say and a very high evaluation of Mallett on this board that was a minority opinion league wide. So No, my opinion of Ireland hasn't changed, but I hope that that unfounded perception got put to rest.
Although now were seeing the "it was Ross or he caved to the fans" as the new false perception. LOLCWBIII, xphinfanx, smahtaz and 1 other person like this. -
Just as you don't judge a GM based on one bad draft, you also don't forget a history of questionable moves based on one good draft.

We know Parcells had final say. We know Ireland was finding players that fit the Parcells mold. We know that padre.
We also know that the last two drafts Parcells wasn't here for are vastly different players than Parcells would draft.
That's not murky. -
Doesn't change it one way or the other.
Not a fan of the pick.
But I do think he made some pretty good picks later on. -
-
Well, here is the thing, I used to like Ireland a bunch, then went neutral on him due to guys not working out and some other things like he seemed to sleaze his way out of responsibility with Sparano and stuff like picking up Colombo, I thought the Marshall trade was a bad one and could not believe we were in cap purgatory.
I like this draft class, I like the fact he stuck his neck out for Tannehill, that erased some of the sleaze, I like his bargain bin Wr's and the Miller pick, did not like the Martin or Vernon picks as neither figure to be impact guys and once again we used a high value resource on non impact players which has been his pattern.
So all in all, this is something of a mixed bag for me, if THill works out along with Miller and Egnew, then this will have been a great draft, especially Miller who is 212 but runs 4.4's, now it depends on the Staff and whether they are willing to offer opportunities for Egnew and Miller to make impacts, this was an area that really bothered me with Sparano. They'd draft guys and never play them, as in "not if he is the last guy on the bench" not play them.
For example, I thought John Jerry did fine at left tackle when Big Jake went down, but Philbin is makng noise like he "has to find his position" ie, he probably won't play...I HATE that, much prefer tossing a guy out there and see what he has and I do not care if they are a "bad" practice player or not. That whole approach, to my mind, was one of Sparano's largest flaws. -
I do think Parcells brought some good qualities to the franchise, I also think his approach, the "big man's game" was waaay outdated and got our Qb's killed, when only 1 Qb played all 16 games in 4 yrs, there were problems that were never addressed. -
Ireland ws in charge of scouting. He had final say on the UDFAs and CFL guys. He clearly gets credit for those. But we know that Parcells took guys off his board and had final say on the early rounds so Ireland doesn't get credit for those. Some people just found it easier to keep repeating Parcells rules for QBs and Parcells size parameters and assume that Ireland was the same person.

We needed to start developing a drafted QB, end of story. Ireland didn't have a choice. It wasn't Ross or caving into the fans wishes.
I believe if we would of traded back then we most likely would have lost the opportunity to land T-Hill, Cleveland taking Weeden is proof of that. Proof also Philbin/Sherman/Ireland valued T-Hill more then Weeden. But T-Hill was taken earlier then he probably should have.
Ireland needs to dig himself out of whatever real or false perception the fans have of him. No one else or a percentage of fans can do that for him.
Personally, the first 3 rounds went along way in doing just that IMO. The rest of the draft is questionable.
To me this was Philbins draft, and I believe Ireland took his advise, but Ireland could have nixed any of Philbins requests.
"Unfounded" "false" ??? doubt it. Probably somewhere in the middle is the truth, as it normally is.xphinfanx, Tin Indian and Fin D like this.
