If Fergie comes back, and Soliai takes the next step, we could afford to take a NT in one of the later rounds as a project. Problem is Soliai just flashes brilliance, then seems to disappear. And does Fergie have another year left?
TBone Cody supposedly is down to 320 according to him, 350ish according to Mike Berradino who shared a plane ride to Indy with Cody, Jimmie Graham and Sam Young. I like him, if we need a NT we need one.
I think nose tackle is a critical position for the Dolphins. Without an effective NT, a 3-4 defense just does not work well. Soliai may stll eventually start playing like we all hoped, but if he doesn't that leaves a big hole if Ferguson leaves. We all know that not just any tackle can handle the nose tackle job in the 3-4.
Dude, that was a month ago, with millions on the line you don't think he'd put the fork down and drop some weight?
He was down in FL going through pre Combine training. And TBH, really fat guys can drop weight quickly the real question is keeping it off.
Soliai seems to do well in taking one-on-one situations (sometimes) and getting penetration in the backfield. His run-stopping ability leaves more to be desired. He just seems to not have the body to take double-teams very well. He does not have that Ferg body-type. He's too long. I think he plays too high at times. I think if a solid NT is there at 12, maybe Miami should take a hard look. It really is a tough position to fill.
Well first off I had to quote this post because I..... Love that pick (it makes me laugh) Wanted to mention he's about the same weight at Wilfork and three inches taller. Then I wanted to post some of Wilforks Images!
Agreed, to me Soliai would be a monster of a DE, as a NT he battles his man rather than going through the man, I've seen Paul S throw blockers out of the way but that is just to slow a method for a penetrating NT. As DE it would be the ultimate bullrush, as a NT the play is already past him.
He does. He honestly looks like he ate another person, Whole. But he's a stud 3-4 NT. I'm going to quote the coach again. If we can get him in the Second its a no brainer IMO.
Damn, Padre, I almost put that he's just a heavy DE. We're thinking along the same lines. For some reason, he seems more suited for maybe a 4-3? I just have that feeling that he's this 'tweener guy that they're trying to make into a 3-4 NT because of his weight. I mean, sometimes, he swallows his guy up, but then he just.....ugh, gets run over. But he does not take double-teams really well. He's OK, but I had higher hopes for him.
I'd give him this year at least, he had his first real taste of starting in 09, let's see what he does with his time to digest what he learned. That scout dude Daniel Jeremiah mentioned that Soliai was possibly the rawest NT prospect he has seen coming into the NFL, that was 4 yrs ago entering this season.
That's what a probowl NT looks like when they work their *** off. Ngata also plays much faster, IMO and I'd also attribute that to better conditioning. Seeing as where Cody is likely to be drafted, I don't even know why he's in the conversation for our 1st round pick.
I think Cody is the guy if u need one, not at 12 obviously, but but what about Williams?? I think he is a mistake at 12...the thing is if not Williams, then who, besides McClain right....?? trade down...
I could see this position biting us in the *** if we don't have someone ready to step in for Fergie. Not sure who will be there at 12 and if anyone's worth it but it is something to consider for sure.
Read the scouting article on sunsentinal...it says some stuff about Williams from a scout...and I def agree with what he says, he talks about him being a perfect fit for us
It's a pretty safe guess he is on the same workout program as his teammate last yr, Andre Smith Frank Costanza and Cosmo Kramer, Cody needs your help. Do you carry a manzere or bro in a 5XL?
If we can't get the value for the pick at 12 I beleive they will trade back to around 20. At that point Wiliams or maybe Cody becomes an option for us. 12, I think, is too early for either of these guys. Regardless, I still think we are going D again in the 1st and we will go Reciever in the 2nd.
Just as a side note, and I did a review of the Nose Tackles who the Dolphins, Cowboys, and Jets* acquired(rather than inherited like Paul Soliai/La'Roi Glover/etc) and the average was 6'2" and change and 307 pounds. Jeff Ireland, in an interview threw out 6'4" 320 as his ideal. This suggests they would want someone taller, and leaner, and that they are much more likely to "grow" as Nose Tackle than select someone who has weight issues they have to fight with. * Left out Patriots and Giants semi-arbitrarily because size differences were too big to be comparable to modern game.
I wanted to trade up to get Ngata so bad. It would've been at least 5 spots up though to get him. Too bad we had no picks after giving up a 2nd for Culpepper and a 5th for Manny Wright
This is why I wouldn't be surprised at all if Miami selects Dan Williams at #12. I mean, they need one regardless if Soliai is a starter or not because even if Ferg plays this season, he is on his last legs. He is about to retire, so even if Soliai is a starter, we'd need his backup 'at least'. So why not go for the best one? And with us picking this high, we may not be picking this high in a while (i hope). So I'd not be surprised if Miami rumors WR/OLB all the way up to the draft and select Dan Williams at #12.
The talk I have heard today is that with everyone switching to 3-4 defense itis making the Nose even more of a premium. Now the possibility of taking one of these guys Williams or Cody becomes a real possibility at 12. If I had to chose I would take Williams over Cody. We already have a NT with weight problems. And speaking of Soliai, I don't think he will ever be more than a backup. He just doesn't take up the space like you think he should and our run defense reflected that after Fergie went down.
Me too. Even though it seemed kind of high to be picking a NT, I really felt Ngata was going to be special. Thank god we got Jason Allen as such a nice consolation prize
Ngata isn't a nose tackle. Kelly Gregg is Baltimore's nose tackle. Ngata plays a rotation of DE/DT. He took over at NT only because Gregg got injured. Saban wanted him to play the nose, but Baltimore doesn't use him that way.
