No to Jake Long. Salary demands too high for production and health.

Man, how the mighty have fallen in some eyes. Jake Long not being a Dolphin would have been hard to handle not too long ago.

He hasn't fallen in my eyes. I still feel he's the best LT in football. But 12+ million a season is just too much.

He won't get 12 milllion from us, or anyone else. 10 mille sounds about right.

On one hand we're saying Long isn't playing elite football and hasn't done so in approximately two years. On the other hand, we're saying that he'll command a salary as if he were playing elite football.

Joe Thomas got 10.5 M. Clady is seeking more than 10. Long will seek 11-12 M a year.

What? White guys can't be deep threats, so they shouldn't get extensions. Preposterous!

Thomas signed for 11.5 million a season, according to spotrac. He's the example I was thinking of, too.

I'd offer him what Duane Brown got from the Texans. Long was better from 2008-2010, but since then Brown has been the better LT.
If he won't sign for that, then let him walk and get a 3rd round compensatory pick in 2014.

When you have a 4th-round pick who's starting for you, putting up the numbers Hartline is, and is being extended, I'd say that's an overwhelming personnel success.

Check the rate of 4th-round picks who are still on rosters four years into their careers, much less starters, much less putting up league-leading numbers. It ain't good.

But I suppose Jeff Ireland should be chastised for what he's done at the wide receiver position.

Oh and by the way, he found the other starter, who's also doing pretty well in the league, as an undrafted free agent.

Color has nothing to do with it. I'm as white as Brian.

In my eyes you need to be able to get open deep on more than the occasional double move, busted coverage or extended plays to be a deep threat.

Re-sign him. So long as it's for #2 money.

IMO Even if he plays like the best LT in history I wouldn't pay an offensive lineman 12 million.

If he has I've never seen it.

Let me put it this way....his double move works because corners don't respect him deep and know they can make up ground due to his lack of speed. With a true deep threat the underneath is opened up because corners won't bite on that first move. They would rather have that receiver catch a 7-8 yard pass than torch them over the top. With Hartline it is the opposite. Corners don't respect his speed so they jump the initial route.

Then why give him any cushion at all?

You can't have it both ways folks. Either he gets more cushion from corners, or they're squatting on his underneath routes. It ain't both.

Keep trying to "explain" why someone is among the league-leading receivers in downfield game, without attributing any of it to the player himself. You're bound to stumble onto something at some point, eh?

Brown recently signed for 7 yrs/ $56,200,000. That sounds fair to me.

Then why don't they play press coverage more often? If he is so slow why would they ever line up 10 yards off?

    That's not true.

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d82470936/Hartline-41-yard-catch

In that play, he just beats the defender. The slight hesitation move didn't even work on him and he still ran past him.

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d82289c5b/Hartline-38-yard-catch

Beats the defender. No double move. No lack of respect.

That's not even counting the times when he was open and Henne missed him.

Also, it's unfair to discount double moves for Hartline, or any receiver. He has a great deal of success with them. He's a deep threat. The numbers show it and his play shows it.

That's great news...The sooner the better. He's a very good receiver who got mugged consistently his first three years. Man, haha, I mean, if someone were to put together a highlight reel of the "muggings of Brian Hartline" it would surpass "Gandhi" in length...Finally rising to the top with what looks to be a special QB, priceless.

    :tongue2:

The debate over him being a deep threat shouldn't have any affect on being extended.
He's tremendously valuable to this team, and I've always believed he could be a jack-of-all-trades type of WR whom you could move around the field trying to create mismatches and such, just not as the guy you want being your primary receiver. He should be paid like a #3 or low end #2.

One reason is perhaps b/c he's rarely to never under/over bracketed to where it's safer to press him at the line knowing the corner has help over the top.... although Patrick Peterson doesn't mind playing him bump and run w/o any safety help.
Another reason is he has good initial quickness (including lateral speed), but that's not the same thing as vertical speed. Zona could've bracketed him at some point during those 253 yards, but they didn't even bother.

Hartline is most definitely not a one trick pony. The man is a very crafty player with a full toolbox. He's perfect for this offense.

They've been negotiating off and on with Hartline since the early offseason. Not like it's something new. They may however have ramped things up before he can string together anymore games that would definitely raise his price.

He will cost most then the Bess contract........that's for sure.

Because sometimes cushion has absolutely nothing to do with the WR. It may be a design of the overall scheme and coverage plan. The corner doesn't just decide when he wants to bump and on who.
