This time of year, virtually every self-respecting football fan is bursting with excitement at the prospect of a new batch of NFL talent. And for teams with one of the first few picks in the first round, the energy is even more intense.

The reason is simple. Those first few picks are usually earmarked for franchise-altering selections.

For the first time in franchise history, the Miami Dolphins are owners of the No. 1 overall pick, not to mention all of the fanfare and media attention that goes along with that designation. And as expected, Bill Parcells and his cohorts have provided plenty of media fodder with their pre-draft antics. In all honesty, though, while it’s fun to get caught up in all the rumor and innuendo, the real fun begins on Saturday afternoon, Day 1 of the draft.

With four picks on the first day of the draft – all occurring within the first 64 overall selections – the Dolphins have ample opportunity to upgrade their overall talent level with Pro Bowl-caliber players. And of course, along with prospects for the future, there is a chance that Miami’s brain trust will make a perplexing or non-conformist selection (or a little of both) which will lead to an all-out fan mutiny. Then again, it’s much easier to boo an upstart first-year head coach like Cam Cameron than a living football legend like Parcells.

Incidentally, I wonder who would elicit the most boos at No. 1 overall? Probably Darren McFadden. Maybe even Glenn Dorsey, although those boos would likely be based on narrow-mindedness more than football IQ.
