Skins are in rebuilding mode jim1, they had to accumulate picks over certain players which is why they were selling cheaply so to speak imo.
True the Skins are rebuliding, but especially with an offensive-minded Shannahan running the show- to pass on Gabbert and another guy who I've been very high on (Ponder), I'm thinking that there must be a lot of faith in Beck over there.
Maybe they have their eye on a guy like Kolb (I"m not a fan), maybe I'm just missing something.
But in the spirit of Occam's Razor, it's what strikes me first, what comes to mind- they like Beck
quite a bit.
Mike Shanahan Thinks John Beck Can Be Redskins Starting QB
Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said on Saturday that John Beck has a shot at being the team’s starting quarterback in 2011.
“When he came out [of BYU] in 2007, you evaluate the quarterbacks every year, and he was by far my No. 1 guy,” Shanahan said via the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star. “I think the world of him.”
With 2010 starter Donovan McNabb on his way out and Rex Grossman not under contract, the idea of Beck starting is not out of the question. Posting a 1:3 touchdown-to-interception ratio in his four career starts, the soon-to-be 30-year-old Beck has a lot to show in order to get the job.
Shanahan, however, has a lot of faith in Beck. He said that a quarterback in his system needs a specific set of tools and Beck possesses all of them.
“I’m not going to go through all his strengths and weaknesses because it’s everything you look for in a quarterback,” Shanahan said. “What does it take to be a great quarterback? No. 1, you’ve got to love the game. You’ve got to have passion. You’ve got to have a mindset.”
“What I’m looking for is a guy that’s going to be first to work, last to leave. You’ve got to be able to run this offense at a very high level. He can do some things with his legs that a lot of quarterbacks can’t do. He’s in that 4.65-4.7 [-second 40-yard dash] range.”
Beck is also making the most the right preparations so far this offseason. He is currently training with Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees–quarterbacks of the last two Super Bowl champions–in San Diego.
“I look at it as it’s a great opportunity for me to try to prove myself on a football field,” Beck said. “I’m the only one that knows how much I’ve been doing these past three years working my tail off for this opportunity.
“It obviously means a lot to me, but at the same time I also know you never know what tomorrow brings in the NFL.”
Many also thought that Beck would have to compete with an incoming rookie, but the Redskins emerged from the Draft’s seven rounds without a signal caller.
“I had already convinced myself that I didn’t really care because if they bring anybody in, my mindset is I want to beat him,” Beck said. “And even if they don’t, nothing is going to be handed to me. My mindset is whatever group of quarterbacks I’m in, I want to be the guy who earns it.”
