I'm all for it! whoever we can work out the best deal with(for us), sign em up, draft em, and get them involved with the offense/defense. the last thing this team needs is a long, nasty holdout. We need a guy who can step up right away and make an impact. I like this strategy alot.

I posted this idea a couple months ago and some of you made fun of me:cry::cry:
Im putting in my application for a NFL FO sometime next week!
Seriously, this is the right thing to do. The #1 pick hasnt been traded in a LONG time(Eli is a player, not a pick) It makes all the sense in the world to see who might be the best bargain. There is no one player who stands above the rest so this is the right path imo. -
Something I've been saying for over a week. Armando needs to catch up!

I was pondering this notion, and after reading this article, I still don't think it would ever happen. BUt who seems like the closest thing to a legit left tackle? Otah, Clady? Sign them early to that 5-10 overall money, but pick them at no.1.They'd never go #1, and that should effect negotiations. Seems impossible, but itd be a smart strategy. Both sides would have to be willing to listen, and if the dopey agent gets greedy, then bug off, and have fun getting drafted way later, for less money.
Itd actually twist up the who ridiculous economy of the draft picks...which is a good thing. -
it sounds like it makes sense, but seriously, how much money are we talking about possibly saving? Agents and players do not like to be jerked around as bargaining chips.
If we evaluate three guys equally then, fine, take the best deal. But don't negotiate with a guy you have zero intention of drafting cause that player or agent will stick it to you in the future -

What I don't like about this is that it screams the team is going for the cheapest player they can get with the #1 overall pick and not the best player they can get with the pick. To me, it is a poor strategy to take with the #1 pick.
The drop off from Chris Long to Vernon Gholston is bigger than the drop off from Vernon Gholston to Quentin Groves. So, if you draft Vernon Gholston with the #1 pick, you are doing so because he will sign a cheaper contract. In the process though, you are passing on the much better football player in Chris Long. It's a practice of letting finances influence your football decisions instead of letting the actual football playing ability influence the football decisions.
Personally, I think the Dolphins will decide between the two Longs, Chris and Jake. They will probably draft whichever one will sign the cheaper contract, which I also don't really care for. Between the two, I would take Chris Long. He's the better player and is more worth the first pick than Jake is. I don't believe Jake will ever be good enough as a left tackle to justify using the #1 overall pick on him. -

Or maybe just maybe Miami envisions a line full of guys that can anhilate in the running game and allow your favorite player in the world to run for 5.5 YPC.

whose favorite player Jaj?

Your exaggerations are ridiculous.
I guess we shouldn't draft Chris Long because he'll be overwhelmed by every NFL level offensive linemen he faces? Or wait are we going to enter him into a pee-wee league with 90th ranked OT prospects?
See how exaggerations make arguments look silly? I understand you prefer Chris Long and I think he's a great player too, but trying to tell me that Jake Long will struggle against every speed rusher is beyond reason. Jake Long is at the least as good a pass blocker as Vernon Carey is and Carey was just fine this past year. I've been observing your posts and they're quite interesting because you go from saying that Long would be worth the 5th overall, to Jake Long is a pure RT, to Jake Long will struggle against any speed rusher to Jake Long is not on the level of Orlando Pace etc...
Sorry but there's a big difference between Jake Long is not Orlando Pace and Jake Long will be overwhelmed every time he steps out onto the football field. Ah yes the question of his stiff hips.... Why is it that guys like Alex Barron and Wayne Hunter and even D'Bust fail? Because it's not just about the hips and the foot quickness. The LT is at the end of the day an offensive linemen. He must be powerful and he has to play like an offensive linemen. Joe Thomas is no manimal when it comes to foot speed. He has short arms. Oops wait the theory of long arms, ridiculous feet, etc... may not be as perfect as we thought it was huh?
I also read one of your arguments that Jake Long can improve his base but cannot improve his hips? And why would that be? Who knows if he's practiced his lateral agility etc... as much as his strength. Even lateral agility can be improved over time with work and the man has the work ethic to do so.
See I don't think you even had a good idea of where Jake Long should rank do you? If he were a value with the fifth overall pick then he'd have to have a good shot at being a very good left tackle in this league. Even Levi Brown will switch at some point and has quickness if not pure straight line speed. Yet you say Jake Long doesn't have the feet to do so.Last edited: Apr 12, 2008 -
I highly doubt any player/agent team is going to sign a cheap (IE less than the next pick or two is slotted for) contract just because he thinks he won't get picked high enough ny another to to get that kind of money. The agent won't do it even if the player might. However, it does give the Fins a feel for signability of the player. Even if we had a guy we were absolutely in love with, if the guy is not going to sign a contract for five or six months I'd rather take the next guy. This is most likely a way of weeding out the difficult ones.

Something stood out to me a few months ago. In an interview, Bill Parcells stated, and has always stood by, one basic philosophy: We don't necessarily want the best players... we want the right players. I think that's especially important with this first pick in the draft.
Now, we all know the Longs, Dorsey, and Gholston are the Fantastic Four. If we stay at #1, Miami most likely will not turn over their draft card to the NFL commissioner without one of those names on it. So... who is the best player... and more importantly, is he also the right player?
Again... up until a week ago, I had my mind made up that it was Chris Long. End of story. He's the best player (taking the 3-4 into account), and that's what you do... you take the best player. However, when we started negotiating with Jake Long's agent, I pictured Jake in a Phins uniform... and the ripple effect he would have on the entire offense. I'm not about to give into the popular opinion that he's only going to be a RT... he gave up a total of 2 sacks in his entire career at Michigan. 2 sacks. I don't necessarily see him as being the next Orlando Pace, or anything, but I think his "inability" to handle speed-rushers is a bit overblown, and the guy is much more than simply "capable" of protecting the QB's blind side. He's also an absolute mauler when it comes to running the ball. He's technically sound as hell, and he plays mean. He doesn't just finish blocks... he crushes people.
So, what does that mean to us, Larry? Glad you asked! Well, first of all, it means we could move Carey back to RT.
Look at what we could have: 2 great bookends in Long and Carey, and future pro-bowler Sampson Satele in the middle. Wow. Not too shabby... not too shabby at all for a team that is trying to rebuild(that word is very important). To top it all off... Carey will be entering his 5th season... Satele will be entering his 2nd... Long will be entering his 1st. We would have a tremendous foundation for a GREAT... not just "good"... offensive line for a long time(no pun intended). On the offensive side of the ball, we have a much better chance of winning the game at the line of scrimmage... and to me, that's 50% of winning football. It would be a bright, bright beginning to turning around this franchise.
Jake Long isn't necessarily the best player in this draft... but, he could be the right one. Just a thought... -

"worst case scenario, we have a very expensive, yet contributing solid lineman."
LOL with those theory's...
I think that considering J Longs question marks on playing LT C Long would be the more prudent choice!

When I got old enough to understand the game a little better, we drafted Dan, and it was all over. I was a Dolphins fan through-and-through. Have been ever since. :up:Sethdaddy8 likes this.
