It’s not like the Dolphins haven’t thought big. They drafted 6-5 Michael Egnew in the third round but he was a bust. They brought 6-5 Stephen Williams in to training camp this year but he didn’t show enough to warrant a roster spot.
There’s nothing Miami can do to address the issue the rest of the year but it’s something they really should address in the offseason.
The Dolphins will almost certainly bring Mike Wallace back next year — if he was released they’d have to pay him more than $9 million of the $12 million he’s owed.
But Hartline counts $7.4 million against the cap next year. If he’s cut it would be a $4.2 million cap hit for Miami in 2015.
Even if Hartline is back next year, he’s no lock to keep his starting job. Either way it would make sense to target a big receiver in the draft, possibly in the first round.
After 6-1 Alabama receiver Amari Cooper, who is considered a potential top five pick, there are five other receivers currently projected to go in our near the first round: West Virginia’s Kevin White (6-3), Arizona State’s Jaelen Strong (6-4), Louisville’s DeVante Parker (6-3), Michigan’s Devin Funchess (6-5) and Oklahoma’s Dorial Green-Beckham (6-5).
Find a stud out of that group, pair him with Wallace and Jarvis Landry in the slot, and that could be a big play offense.
