Good backup if we can get him.
And to head off the inevitable "Why would he be a backup here?" questions, the thought process is likely an assumption that Henne will flounder, Garrard can step in, and because Henne's in the last year of his deal, Garrard can lock down the starting job going forward.

Interesting. I don't think it hurts and if forced to play he would be excellent with his mobility.
-
I think it would be horrible for Henne. One bad game and people will be screaming for Garrard - sort of like Pennington last year.

No reason not to see what he wants. I, although probably in the minority, have some real optimism with Henne this year but never hurts to have a better "plan b" just incase.

I optimistic in Henne. I really want to see what he has and want to see him succeed. Having said that, this is his last shot. We Ride or die with Henne. If he does not improve in now his 3rd year starting, with more weapons, new OC, new attitude then we know this season is lost and that we have to break the bank at the draft and start over again next season. I like Garrard but don't think he would add that much to our team than make it like at best 10-5, maybe squeak into the playoffs and then lose. Its Henne or bust!
-
I also dislike the timing. Know what, though? Henne had a trial by fire with those "we Want Orton" chants at camp. If he truly IS ready to take the bull by the horns this season, then the Garrard news will make Henne determined to play so well tonight that he slams the door shut on any thoughts of the Dolphins needing Garrard as a potential starter this year.

If Garrard was smart he'd sign with the Colts.

Desides, why would we want Garrard to lock down the starting job going forward when Jax doesn't even want the guy and used a 1st round pick to replace him?
Either Henne shows enough to where he's resigned as our 2012+ QB....... or we draft a QB in the 1st round and move forward with him.
No more of this carousel nonsense. Garrard is not a long term answer.MrClean, HULKFish, pacadermng67 and 2 others like this. -
What Henne thinks of whomever is his back up is secondary to what the teams need are.If he plays bad fans will call for whoever that is so you should have the best available. They are all one hit away from retirement.

I don't think we'd be looking at him for anything other than a back-up upgrade to Moore in case of injury. Nothing wrong with a little due diligence to see what his price is provided it's made known that he's a backup. The last thing we need right now is locker room/leadership controversy.
-
Not a David Garrard fan, but I'd take him on as a backup. I agree with a couple of other posters that the timing is bad for this report for sure. I also agree if I was Garrard I'd be making a beeline to Indy.
-
I don't think it is ever good for a starter's confidence when a backup is brought in that had better numbers than you the previous season. Garrard had a QBR of 90.8 with 23TD's and 15 INT's last year. He also ran for 5 TD's. Those a better numbers than what Henne put up last year - or ever for that matter. And before I get crucified, they are better numbers than Sanchez too.
I think Garrard still has some game left in him and adding him to the team makes your roster stronger. But it will almost certainly lead to a QB controversy at some point. Just my opinion.MrClean and Larryfinfan like this. -
I doubt Henne's worried, the QB position is his now unless he's injured or just does flat out terrible for 4-5 games in a row. He led the team in the offseason, he has the support of all his teammates, and he's a team captain now. He's not just another QB on the roster like last year.. he won't be swapped out so easily now.

I never buy that bringing in a vet to backup a QB when you need another QB on the roster hurts the starting QB. Henne isn't a baby, he's been in the league for 4 years, surely he would be able to handle Garrard as a backup. If that would hinder him then he isn't a playoff-caliber starting QB to begin with.
Great QBs don't worry about who is behind them, because they don't have to, they go out and play well. The G Man likes this. -

I'm less worried about Henne's level of maturity in handling this situation as I am the fans.
How many bad passes will it take to start a "GARRARD!" chant? 3? 1?Colorado Dolfan and Tone_E like this. -

As to Garrard himself, I'm not overly impressed. He was a one year wonder that due to his contract, it stretched into 3 or 4 years. Now if he comes on board as a backup and that's understood by all parties, I guess that would work, but I just don't see Garrard wanting to be in that situation with us...I think there are other teams that he'd more likely have opportunities with than us. Besides, if we falter this year and the regime is swept out of here, where would that leave him ?? -
If they sign him, whatever, but I don't think we'd be improving our team any. If the 90+ passer rating intrigues you, just look at his 2010 season game log -- not a single good performance against a good pass defense.
-
i´m ok with this, if henne plays well it doesnt matter, so its all up to him

Of course, there's this counterpoint by Ben Volin:

The timing of this is impeccable

That said, I hope Chad just shines and they can fuggedaboutit -

Watched a vid on NFL.com. Supposedly he played like **** all through camp and all of the players knew he was going to be cut. Luke McCown outshined him.
