I don't think you can attribute the loss as a whole to refereeing, but that was a pretty ****ing poorly called game in ways that hurt the Dolphins. They basically got up to 13 points on the back of tremendous bad calls.

The coaching in general in this game was not good. The clock management was badly suspect at several points(playing for a field goal late in the 1st half, and then approaching the sack/Sturgis miss in the 4th), and the team completely abandoned the run game once again under no pretext of need whatsoever.

Ryan Tannehill had another not particularly good game. He was fairly efficient early on, but he's fallen into a habit of throwing dumb interceptions. The one killing a badly needed drive was awful, and I've really got no idea what the last one was. There wasn't a wide receiver within 20 yards of that.

I'm not sure how there's any argument that Tannehill isn't a huge factor in the number of sacks that are being taken. This game was a pretty huge example. He doesn't take his eyes off the field, doesn't sense the pressure at all, he just sits in the pocket. You get late in the game, and you can pretty much tell the team is going to go into a cycle of him taking sacks by the way he starts playing. It's pathological to the point where it should be named. Tannehill syndrome, or something like that.

That's not to say it's all him, and there was a bit of an issue with pass protection packages. The linemen blocked well, but the blocking scheme didn't always add up.

The running game was quite good- 156 yards, 5.0 yards per carry. Both Miller and Thomas played quite well. Miller made some good pass blocks- When he was in to block.

I thought Bryant McKinnie played shockingly well for whom he is, much less the circumstances. Overall, the offensive line was pretty good. The pass protection issue basically came down to coaching and Tannehill.

Losing Brandon Gibson is going to be a pretty big blow, I think. We go into this year with what looks like quite good wide receiver depth, we lose Binns for the year and potentially Gibson as well.

Michael Egnew has quietly turned into a good lead blocker. He threw a couple of quite nice blocks today in that capacity.

Mike Wallace is not showing any signs of playing better.

I think the defense played a pretty mixed bag. There was some nice plays, but there were also some terrible plays mixed in.

Jared Odrick is having a breakout season, and I think he's quite arguably our best defensive tackle at this point. Starks had a bit of a quiet game, but Soliai I think had a pretty bad one. Late in the 3rd quarter he had a really abominable string in a row where he got buried, had his back turned inexplicably, and then missed a tackle 1v1 on consecutive runs.

Olivier Vernon isn't turning into a star pass rusher, but he's quietly had 4 sacks in the last 4 games.

For all the outright laughing and dubiousness expressed at the idea Dion Jordan would/could cover Rob Gronkowski, he was put in that situation multiple times and did it reasonably well.

I think the linebackers played alright, but didn't distinguish themselves. Ellerbe is solid but unspectacular(Which isn't great for the money I suppose), and Wheeler is quite good moving forward but otherwise kind of pedestrian.

Dmitri Patterson has been a hell of a player for Miami when he's been on the field, the rough play of Nolan Carroll is a pretty bad contrast.

I don't really have a whole lot to say about the safeties good or bad this week.

Caleb Sturgis is apparently not at all a robot.

 

Very much so. He caught 3 of 10 targets today. The guy is basically a menace to the offense, and Brandon Gibson could have filled the void nicely I think.
