Some of these reactions are beyond silly. It's about sponsorship people. Do razors have anything to do with Patriots? Does oil have anything to do with Colts? GEEZ people get a grip! At least the sponsor we garnered is a cool product, with a cool name and one that matches S.FL. in a number of ways so how gives a hoot?
Those who hate Jimmy Buffet or don't want to see the Super Bowl taken away from Miami in the future. As I understand though this is a 1 year deal and we may have a new name next season. Here's to hoping.
That's a petty reason to dislike the name of the stadium, he is a minority owner in the team after all. Are you going to boycott the team or like them any less because you don't like him or Ross or Parcells? Again, that's a silly reason. And as I pointed out before, that isn't going to happen. Miami can look for someone to sponsor the naming rights during the SB and PB, problem solved. Plus they are continuing to look for a larger sponsor for the future. Much ado about nothing
Who cares if you don't like Jimmy Buffet music? It's not sponsored by Jimmy Buffet's music. It's sponsored by a beer company owned by Buffet in partnership with A.B. Brewing...... did you miss that completely? Secondly the naming rights won't be kept for Super Bowl games so that "concern" is null and void. No real reason to be freaked out here at all. Stadiums have all kinds of sponsors all over the country. It's not about picking a product fans approve of.....
I don't know how anybody can postulate that our fight song could be any lamer than it already is. It's terrible. The players think it's ridiculous.
I'm torn on this. I still want it to be Joe Robbie, and hate selling out history and tradition in the name of profits.... so even having it named after the team was more tasteful to me. Also, I hate the idea of us potentially losing Superbowls if this sponsor sticks around. Seems like a dumb move on Ross' part if it makes the NFL nervous about committing to future Superbowls with us (or if we have to change stadium names yearly). The ONLY thing I like about it is that it's really hard to enjoy the full experience of being a Phins fan out here in California as I get none of the local buzz or cross-promotional hype you locals see about our team.... and the only Floridian thing I CAN find here is Landshark beer., At least this way I could drink Landshark beer on game day and feel somewhat connected to the team. Lame, but hey, I'll take what I can get. And, obviously, my thinking is one example of what Landshark would be accomplishing by buying the stadium naming rights: a higher profile for their brand amongst football-viewers. I guarantee you it's not a mistake that Landshark has their beers in stores nationally at the same time as deciding to make a huge national/regional marketing move for exposure. This is a co-ordinated effort to own the Florida region, but raise the brand's national exposure.
i was just gonna say that...step back and look at what your upset about......the stadiums name!!!!! lolololol
what did Pro Player have to with a dolphin.. it was called that for years, if you have a complaint, it should be that it isn't called what it REALLY is .... Joe Robbie's Stadium.
So I guess you wouldn;t mind if we decided to call you whatever name we felt like? Fact is, naming is a very important part of our psychology, our culture and how we interface with the world. There's a reason it's the first thing the Bible says God had Adam do: walk around the garden of Eden and name everything. In later modern and post-modern semiotics Sassure and Barthes explored the deep effect on the psyche of the "Signifier"'s (name) relationship to the "signified" (the thing we named). Anming things is a deep ritual which is about attachment, a sense of understanding, comfort and familiarity with an otherwise alien object or world. The first thing we do when we have babies of our own is name them. In fact, it is seen as so important, most parents agaonize over the decision and decide on a name well before the child is even born. This naming ceremony creates a link between the new child and ourselves (also the reason it bears our last name). Even in terms of our sense of self, as distinct and separate from the rest of the universe around us, we seem to require delinieation of individuality via a name. We believe, in fact, that we ARE that name, thus the frequent phrase "I am Kevin." or "He is Bob" or whatever your 'name'. The reality is, we certainly are NOT our actual names. Yet names hold an immense power for us and we become strongly identified with them nonetheless. Sports receive a deep and strong emotional investment from their ardent fans. A complex emotional attachment not devoid of similar dynamics including familiarity, comfort, possessiveness, identity-synthesis with one's beloved team (not "they won" but "we won"), and a strong love attachment. It is no wonder then than the power of naming and names holds deep psychological significance in this area too. So when people are so incredulous that a name could have any significance whatsoever, I would ask that person to consider and examine the role of naming in our human relationship to the world around us, in relation to others, to ourselves, and to the things we love, whether sports or otherwise. What's in a name? Nothing, but the significance we give it. Which is to say, a lot.
Well, no. Changing the name of the team is, you must admit, much different. I would agree with you that that should not change.
hmm. i thought we were trying to make a great family atmosphere at dolp..err landshark stadium. cut down on the drunken fans and what not...so lets name our stadium after booze and hookers and have the biggest party name endorse it. makes sense to me i tell ya. thats like naming a rehab place "cocaine joe's" and giving a address of 420 pill lane.
oh jesus.....cause NOW all the drunkies will come right? to see the big signs!?!? ummmmm did all the sea mamals go to the games when it was named dolphins stadium? or did everyone wear their favorite underwear when it was named pro player?!?!? thats a little bit of a reach imho
what did pro player or dhl have to do with the dolphins? what does gilette stadium have to do with the patriots? what does bank of america have to do with the panthers???? dude its a sponsership.....
Some people watch the superbowl for the beer commercials. Edit: I will always call it Joe Robbie Stadium. I like the idea to always call the field Shula Field. Change the "naming" rights to the stadium, but keep the field called "Shula Field".
I never understood why people get so upset over the Stadium Names. It has ZERO to do with the team. As others have pointed out, it's for ONE YEAR. We will not lose the Super Bowl or Pro Bowl games because of it. Does anyone honestly believe Ross would sacrifice the Millions he'll make off those two events for the amount he's making off the naming rights for one year?
Love the restaraunt and there Margarita's... Hopefully they put one in the stadium, that would be sweet! Don't really see the downside here... I think the name is pretty cool! Not a bad beer either. Adds a more tropical feel to the whole thing.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP! HELP! Now I know change is often new and frightening, but to get one's panties in a bunch over the name of a stadium is a bit silly. No, actually, a bit stoopid. We won't lose out on hosting a super bowl. We won't change the team name. We won't change the street name from Dan Marino blvd. We are not going to win or lose any games because of the name. We are not sending the wrong message with it being named after a beer. Don't give us that "tradition" crap either. There's no tradition in football stadium's names. Besides, the Orange Bowl was our house during the true glory years. In fact, there was this kind of hand wringing and ridiculousness when we moved to the current stadium. And now, we can't change the name of this place? Lame. This is why country music is evil. Every other song is about how much better things were. Same mentality here. Let's move on people. The stadium will have a different name every year, you'll still be a Dolphin's fan regardless, and country music still sucks. How about we start making new traditions instead of clinging to old ones?
I'm just finding it amusing that Florida is so enamored with a hack musician who forged an entire career out of two of the worst songs ever written, and milked both of them to death for well over 25 years.
Heck, I think we could have some fun with Jimmy! I can see it now. Game is over, everyone is heading for the exits and on the way out I can hear those magical words being sung by all..... Why... don't we get drunk and screw!
Aw c'mon bro, I think Kiss had a little more impact on the music scene that followed than Mr. Buffet did. Aside from alot more quality songs than "Cheeseburger in Paradise". And I'll start a betting pool right now..... How many home games before ol' Jimmy suggests giving out "Parrot Head" hats to all that attend?
If I can steal a line from the movie Role Models... "noone likes Kiss, even Paul Stanley is sick of Kiss". When talking about some of the worst songs being beaten into the ground for decades, Kiss can't be left out of the conversation.
I really don't have a problem with the name change. In the economy climate, if you have a chance to make some big bucks you take it. The stadium to me will always be JRS
