Meh, we needed a RT and we got, by all reports, a pretty good one. I'm OK with the pick. I was hoping for that trade down for more picks. If he starts for 7-10 years nobody will care.

 

Last year we gave up a #2 to move up from 12 to 3. The Bills gave up a #1 and a #4 to move from 9 to 4. So there's that.

But I have to agree. We coulda/shoulda moved down and still gotten James. Had multiple opportunities.

Reason we didnt move down is because cincy was rumoured to of really liked james

 

There's not a lot of things in this process that are less useful than draft grades.

 

yeah, we could have made several trades up and down and picked up about 6 more picks....geez...just because NO made a deal with someone below us does that necessarily mean that deal was available to us ?? We weren't a threat to them, we needed an OL not a WR...

 

With who?? I don't see that. NO didn't need to deal with us ??

 

If the teams need is OT and they get the best available Tackle without costing more picks how is it such a bad pick? Skip the OL again and we are *****ing all year and go 8-8 again because everyone see's the weakness but the front office. I don't understand why it always has to be a fail fail.

 

I can only image what the pundits would be saying if we traded back and James got taken before our pick.

Also NFL.com didn't give that grade. By that picture it's some 19 year old intern writing for college football.

They said the same thing when Dallas took some unkown center from Wisconsin. All he did was start every game and help solidify their offensive line. The 'experts' looked stupid then...they will end up looking stupid once again when James starts every game and helps solidify our line.

 

Wonder how James compares to Bulaga?

I love how everyone assumes we could have just moved down as though it doesn't require a trade.....sometimes the trade isn't there. You can't always move down. You don't move down for whatever ****ty pick someone is willing to give up, you have to get value and establish that the pick is worth something. A trade down is not always an option. People hand wringing and slamming their fists on the table don't know anything about what trades were discussed or if it was even a possibility.

 

Same as with Pugh by the Giants last year and Howie's kid by the Bears. All Kyle Long did was earn a trip to the Pro Bowl. I said at the time, I loved the Travis Frederick pick when one of the draft gurus was laughing at Jerbo for reaching. The words "reach" and "value" are so overused when it comes to the draft. It is all about getting good players who can step in, fill holes, and contribute.

 

It' not really an assumption as Hickey admitted that he was in talks to trade down after a couple of teams called and made offers.

 

Because the guy was a 2nd or 3rd rounder. We picked him in the 1rst. Dumb. Could have and should have taken Johnny football. We could have traded him later, even. You take the best value.

We know we could have moved down. Hickey said we had offers. NO moved up to 20. If they were willing to make that trade to move up to 20, they surely would have been willing to pay the same compensation to move up to 19. And no, you don't have to "get value and establish that the pick is worth something." You do what's best for the team. It is extremely likely that James would have been there at 26. If you can get the same player at 26 plus an extra pick (even a 6th or 7th), you should do that. I don't believe that the team's grade on James was so much higher than on Bitonio, Moses or Kouandjio to have warranted panic that our guy might not be there at 26. As it is, we know we could have gotten a 3rd because that's what NO gave up to move to 20 and that's what Cleveland paid to move to 22. Again, if they were willing to give up a third to move to 22 or 20, they certainly would have done it to move to 19 and eliminate any concern about the teams between 19 and 22.

 

I believe by the mere fact that Hickey turned down trade offers to stay put and take James indicates he did not have him rated equal to Moses, Kouandjio, Bitonio, etc and felt the compensation gained in a trade down was not sufficient to risk losing out on James. The fact that no other team from 20 to 27 took an OL means little or nothing. Teams like Cincy and KC may have also felt the same about James being a 1st rounder but not those other guys. Carolina needs OL help. Had Hickey traded down to 27, perhaps Carolina would have leapfrogged them.

 

Its an assumption that there were offers worth taking. You don't trade down for just any offer you can get.

 

You are assuming a lot of things. You really think Hickey got a great offer and turned it down? Would it have been worth moving down for say a 4th or 5th round pick? We don't know what the offers were, assuming that we got great offers and turned them down is ridiculous. If you establish yourself as a sucker in your first draft its over for you as a GM.
