Dolphins reportedly ‘want’ to pay Tua Tagovailoa but aren’t sure about his fair market value

Paying him that much is crazy, but they think he’s the guy. I do tend to agree, but his play to me hasn’t been at a high level long enough. People will say he won a playoff game, but once again context matters. And if we’re going by wins he’s 9-9.

Yeah, Gutekunst and LaFleur have been watching him every practice since he was drafted. They see his potential and last year, they got to see that he wasn't a deer frozen in the headlights when the action started. It was one thing to make the trade that led to A-a-ron's butt being hurt. It was something else to let Rodgers go and give Love the keys to continue the QB run of great play that started with Brett Favre. They were in the same boat that we were in with Tua - you either pay the man or start over and hope for the best. And like Tua's deal, it might no seem good right now, but it's likely to be considered a bargain in two years.

The thing about Tua, though, is we know for sure what we're getting. Maybe it isn't ideal, but we've seen his floor and probably his ceiling and McDaniel knows what he's working with. The Pack can't be sure they've seen either one yet. If last season was Love's floor, then they got a bargain. But if it's his ceiling, it's not going to be enough.

The thing with Tua that excites TF out of me is that I don't think he's near his ceiling. He's getting better every season and I believe that will continue this year.

This is a great segment of Dan LeBetard's show before the deal was struck yesterday:

Right now he did his job based on excellent data from the player and his projection then now and for the future.

I would of done the same

"Excellent data?" Dude, Love had half a good season. That's not enough data to justify that kind of contract.

It's really only 1 season worth of data, but it's the way last season ended that probably drove his value up.

The last 10 games of the season Love was playing like Aaron Rodgers. He had a 112 rating in those last 10 games with 8 out of 10 having a rating of 108.5 or greater. He had a TD:INT ratio of 21 to 3 in those last 10 games!

Whether that's a good predictor of the future we'll find out, but I think this contract was in large part due to how the season ended. Packers are probably thinking they got the next Aaron Rodgers.

Where did you have love coming out ?

I can show you posts about him from me where I was probably higher on him then anyone on the forum or pundits or anywhere else.

Him lasting to the packers is what’s outrageous.

So like I said plenty of time and knowledge of how he conducts himself on and off the field

Being a good GM is always gonna be a subjective art form, and part of that is projecting and building a roster, so you base those decisions on your convictions, anyone saying it’s stupid or whatever to sign him frankly is not putting themselves in those shoes, the shoes of a GM who loved him coming out and has loved what he’s seen for the past four years

Tell what’s stupid, letting him become a free agent

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa called the four-year, $212 million extension he signed this week “life-changing” at a Sunday press conference and one of the changes is that he’s now the undisputed leader of the franchise.

The wait to get Tagovailoa’s deal done led to some questions about the Dolphins’ level of commitment to the quarterback, but the size of the deal makes it clear that the Dolphins are going to go as far as he can take them in 2024 and beyond. Tagovailoa remarked that “heavy is the crown” when it comes to the responsibility that comes with his new contract and noted that “we haven’t won the games that we wanted to win” when asked about what he wants to accomplish next.

“I’m the highest-paid employee in this office,” Tagovailoa said. “I got to get my whatever together. I got to get that right and get our guys moving in the direction that we need to go to be able to do those things.”

The Dolphins showed their belief in Tagovailoa with this contract extension, but many outside the organization will likely need to see some postseason success to quell their doubts about the quarterback.

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa believes his contract negotiations got a pretty significant boost from his head coach.

Speaking to the media Sunday, Tagovailoa credited coach Mike McDaniel for intervening with ownership to help get his new contract done. Tagovailoa had heard that McDaniel “went to bat for me” during negotiations and pushed owner Stephen Ross to get the quarterback’s deal done.

    https://twitter.com/MySportsUpdate?...ig_move_during_contract_talks/s1_127_40668590

“Word gets around quick, and I don’t think he knows that I know. I’ve been told from several birdies that are here in the facility that are upstairs as well that he went to bat for me,” Tagovailoa said. “The day that I went out at practice, 11-on-11, 7-on-7, he went to bat for me with our owner. I won’t go into details of things that I heard were said, but just know that he is what he says. He says what he told me and he did what I was thinking he would do for me — not just for me, but for any other player. I’m very grateful for that.”

There were rumors during the offseason that the Dolphins were playing hardball with Tagovailoa to a certain degree. McDaniel has long been a staunch defender of Tagovailoa, and his intervention may have greased the wheels a little bit.

The new contract locks Tagovailoa in as Miami’s franchise quarterback for years to come. He is coming off the best season of his career and got himself paid accordingly.

The Packers used a 1st and 4th to draft Love and essentially that bought them 1 season of work. That's not much return on his rookie contract and they didn't even use his lack of experience as an effective bargaining chip in negotiating this contract.

If they were so convinced Love was the future, why not trade Rodgers earlier and get more in return to build around Love.

Just doesn't seem like they have had a plan at all.

Just about every media talking head wants to say this is a mistake and that we should have kept Tua on his 5th year option and then franchised him next year and maybe even the year after. The morons have this idea that players are machines that will perform exactly the same no matter how they're treated. You do that to Tua, you've lost him on an emotional level and we've all seen he plays much better when he's playing for a team that has faith in him.

Most of the people I've heard speaking on it think it was a great deal for Tua and a good deal for the team since it didn't reset the market. LeBatard is the only one that I've seen actually suggest that it would be stupid to back up the Brinks truck. Curiously, he didn't seem to have an alternative toward replacing him and almost seemed to think he would be ultimately forced to take whatever the team proposed. LeBatard's calling him a "system QB" is silly because most of them are in systems that they can run more effectively than others. Besides, the system doesn't make the QB better; a good QB makes the system better.

The thing that nobody wants to admit about Tua in particular is that his value to the Dolphins is greater than it would be on the market - because of the system. Replacing him would be akin to starting a rebuild.

You can add that braying donkey Chris Canty to that list. He thinks Miami is going to regret giving him the contract that they did.

I’m going Tua’s route and keeping receipts, lol.

I turn away from Cowherd, Skip Bayless, Emmanuel Acho, and Stephen A. Smith as soon as I see them or hear their voices. Cowherd can't breathe without spewing a hot take, Skip was ready for the old folks home 10 years ago, Acho has the critical thinking skills of a drunken gnat, and Stephen A. is Stephen A.

Literally nothing that either of them has to say is of interest to me because they're in the game for clicks and comments and the best way to get them is to piss people off.

Its ironic that some of these pundits give McDaniel's system all the credit but the guy who created the system advocates for signing Tua. I wonder who has a better idea on what it takes to run the system?

Riddick is right. Chris Canty has been hating on Tua for a long time. He was dogging him on his radio show a couple of years ago and last season, had to admit that he was playing well (but with a lot less energy) and never said that he was wrong. If anybody thinks we're going to have the same offense with another guy under center, he's not paying attention. So it's not about what Tua's value is to other teams because his value to the Dolphins is too high to move on without retooling the offense.

Nothing proves that somebody's a hater more than having two Jests fans (Greenie and Bart Scott) saying that he's spewing BS on a Dolphins QB.

    ****ing love Riddick man

    Spot on analysis

Finally Tua seemingly has realized he needs to lose weight which will help him be more nimble in the pocket so this jump in performance should be pretty substantial

He’s such a practical learner, I believe on the extreme end

And his elite traits are just that, I don’t think anyone can run this offense like Tua

I think the question always was, will the team be able to keep elite talent around Tua if he gets a big-time contract? If they can, I would expect Tua to do well.

Tua was hot garbage for most of his first two years.... Dude looked overmatched. If Howard and the D didn't create an abnormal amount of turnovers his record would have been far worse..
Never thought Tua would blossom in to a superstar but he has - But let's not sugar coat his tenure under Flores. It wasn't all that good, most likely due to Flores rushing him (he should have sat his entire rookie year, Fitzpatrick was doing awesome and he needed more time to heal)

    Enamored is a big word.

All qbs should be evaluated in the same curve, then take into account their weapons and coaching.

I wasn’t blown away because I knew he should of been on the bench his first year
