Do you happen to recall Sammie Smith playing Deej?

He was a physical freak type of running back who could not deal with adversity.

Recall Lorenzo Hampton?

Shoes really drafted poorly in that 85 to 90 period, sheesh, 2 rb busts, 2 olb/de busts, it was like the Don mailed it in.

 

Very familiar Pod..He was our version of the sparano character '' Big Pu##y..

 

I'm not seeing that in Thomas, nothing suggests it either, he was not a Reggie Bush like "5 star rated prospect from..." type, he had to fight for everything he has gotten, I love that in a player especially when they have physical talent, hustle and health are both talents, but add in burst/change of direction/hands/balance and you have something.

Like Sheets for the same reason, his days of being the problem child at purdue are way back there in the rear view mirror, if he recovers from the Achilles, Sheets can be a compelling story this training camp..if there is one.

I WANT to like Hilliard, but going all of 2010 with no carries, and being healthy, causes me to think Sparano doesn't like Lexxy, but let some zone blocking toss plays happen before saying one way or another, Lexxy physically matches up well with Peyton Hillis, just without the opportunity as of yet.

 

that era was so frustrating and ridiculous from a personnel standpoint, If I reflect too much I get all pissed off..It was like Shula let Dan be himself and gave in to a style he had no clue about, which showed in his personnel decisions.

 

When did we waste Ronnie Browns talent?

 

Well that is one place where I give Ireland credit, the bleeding has stopped on draft day, boring drafts (reminds me very much of old Schottenheimer/Peterson drafts tbh..first rd pick..John Alt, Tackle, Nebraska..snnoozzee) but no busts, and Irish has an eye for 3 things:

-running backs (hmm, now think about this, Thomas reminds people of Larry Johnson, Peterson drafted Larry Johnson...)
-linebackers
-defensive linemen

Everything else is a crap shoot with him, solid players but..not playmakers.

 

I've got excellent ties with that Kstate program, the word ''beast'' is always used when people in the know talk about his skillset..

I just can't believe the guy looks so natural after the conversion., and so productive on an offense that literally had nothing else to attack with..He was the whole show and led that damn league in rushing..Impressive big man to say the least..

I think we really need that compliment..

 

I like how he has built the team Pod..I can't forgive him about Ckap though..I watched all those vince young highlights today...If he goes after Young and didn't draft Ckap, I'am gonna lose it..Kap is going to be the better pro imo..

 

If Sheets is 100% we may already have that compliment Deej.

As for DTrain, remains to be seen, how much football IQ does he have? Enough to add that passing element to the wildcat?

That would be a earthquake Deej, are very own 230 pd/6'0 Qb/Rb who can run between the tackles, or outside on the sweep, and pass from either play and formation.

 

Eh, Deej, Bro we have been watching this stuff for yrs now, how many "can't miss/fancrush" players have we both seen wash out of the entire league?

As for Young, IDK, the more I think about the Karl Peterson influence, the more I doubt we pick up Young, King Karl had his greatest success in KC with Joe Montana and Marcus Allen, I think perhaps that is what he has in mind about "athlete" not a great runner but a Qb who can run.

Tom Condon is going to want big bucks for Young, doubt we pay it.

Hmm, if that is the template, then RW is "our" Marcus Allen, but who knows on that one.

 

At his best though, while a Dolphin, I liked Hampton more than Smith. I think his career was cut short by knee problems, not lack of ability. I was hoping in the '89 draft we would focus on OL to help the runners we had, not overpay for Sammie Smith. Never liked the pick from the instant it was made, and the only 1st rounder since who ever upset me more was Milner. I wasn't aware going into the '89 draft that there was already concerns about Hampton's knee troubles being chronic. Still wanted those two Polak interior OL though.

 

Not necessarily. Ireland does well with DBs too.
Davis, Smith and Clemons, followed by Jones and Carroll. Gives me high hopes for Jimmy Wilson.

I'd say his DB draft picks as a group are better than his RB or LB picks.

I'm thinking overall Mr C, in Dallas they did not really draft Db's so he does not have much of a track record long term, Lb's and Dlinemen and Rb's he has a bit more of a record.

FA though, the big signings, tend to not work out really well and that does go back to the Dallas days, but when he makes small moves he tends to really nail them, Starks, Wake, Polite, etc, odd duck that Jeff Ireland.

Personally if I were Ross I'd budget 1 million for UDFa signing bonuses and turn him lose when the lockout ends, he'd be in GM geek heaven.

 

His stats were 7/12/155 yards, 2 td's 1 pick..

I recall though Ireland being the one who lobbied with Jerbo for Terence Newman, while Tuna wanted K Williams. Also, Ireland was a national scout for Dallas when they drafted S Roy Williams.

Looking at our 6 draftees compared to the Pats 9, and our 6 have the potential to be better than their first 6 and if Ireland can grab 3 of the best UDFAs we could have a top 9 rookies equal to the Pats. Everyone worries about them having more picks than us, but as for me, I'd rather Ireland being the one actually making the selections than Billy B. The latter sure knows how to trade them though. The only pick they made in their top 4 that concerns me though is Vereen. Solder was a reach considering who else was on the board and Dowling IMO is too injury prone to be worth a high 2. Ridley was a huge reach.

 

I think He wasted his talent big time..Imo,The makeup just wasn't there..The desire was not strong enough, the will not consistent enough..The dedication to his craft and body, was weak.., I loved that dudes talent..

 

And in further proof that he didn't have much of a voice in Dallas........they had a hell of a time getting a kicker there.

Brown wasn't as good a receiver as people like to think he was. He got a high volume of passes thrown at him in 2007 when the receiving position was barren and we had a series of awful quarterbacks, but he didn't do anything particularly special with it. He catches the ball well, but he's not a particularly good route runner. He wasn't Marshall Faulk or even Kevin Faulk waiting to happen. He did a good job of catching uncontested passes under the coverage after releasing.

It's not as if being split out wide, or throwing to the back was not part of the offense. It was absolutely in the offense, it's just Patrick Cobbs got that job because he was flat out better at Brown at it. He was way more of a threat than Brown ever was, even in the "golden age" of 2007.

 

Routes? He basically went 10 yards in either direction (LR) to catch a screen pass.

Are you talking about Patrick Cobbs? Because there were games he lined up nearly exclusively in the slot(Both Ravens games in 2008), and running "wide receiver" routes. You can also find videos of him being hit 20+ yards down the field on wheel routes and stuff like that. Ricky Williams was also more involved than Brown, too.

 

been talking about that exact point..soft route runner, not sharp, nor explosive, easy cover.

 

One of the most telling stats, was in Brown's 2007 season, he did not catch a pass on a pattern that was 5+ yds past the LOS.

If Robbie or Huizenga had taken the harder road and at some point insisted Shoes work with a GM I truly believe Marino's years would have had a significanlty different outcome. Shoes was a HORRID GM. Great coach but horrid GM.
Marino's years were criminally mismanaged. Epic waste of a very rare talent.
Pains me to think about it.

He had great hands for a back making him a good weapon our coordinators rarely took advantage of.
When he was finally used in this way under Cameron he was on his way to a career year. I don't think it's any coincidence that he was tearing it up that year under Cameron's direction. While you are attempting to paint 2007 as a fluke I'd argue it was a vision of how this back should have been used from the beginning. I love your comment about Browns route running as well. The guy had speed and it's up to the coaches to get an RB matched up against week DB's or against LB's in coverage. It shouldn't be an issue of how crisp a RB gets out of his cuts. I don't know many RB's that are strategically lined up against starting CB's.

 

I'm not really big on Ronnie Brown but if he stayed, I wouldn't mind it because it'd be a solid compliment to Daniel Thomas. Though I would say that if they could keep Williams instead of Brown, it'd be a better complement.
