A no brainer here. That's why we're even considering LeCharles Bentley and already got Steve McKinney.

We need some help on that left side. Im guessing if the roster stays as it is heading into TC Im assuming that means smiley moves to LG, with Carey and probably one of the young guys on the right side. I dont like the idea of starting two rookies on the QB's blindside. Thats a recipe for disaster i think.

I think McKinney starts at LG, at least to start the season. If one of the kids shows some potential, he might get some snaps to see how things progress. If he can handle it in limited duty, we might see a change around mid season or so.

"raw and inexperienced" does not concern me, it's a rookie left side of the line that does.

Please forgive if this sounds like dumb questions but I'm just a regular guy fan. Never played in school. -

I'm hoping that if Bentley isnt the answer, they trade for someone. The only real low-hanging fruit that I feel matches a pretty good scheme/youth/upside/price list is Daryn Colledge, who played well as a rookie but got benched towards the end of last year.
I am also pretty afraid of the idea that Steve McKinney sucks pretty bad. He's still at the end of the day a guy who managed to give up 9 sacks as a Center. There are people on death row for lesser crimes than that. -

Im not that concerned tbh, young olinemen seem to develop well and quickly. As long as someone steps up we should be ok.

Smiley seems like a great pickup, and I'm looking forward to seeing what Murphy and Thomas can do.
In terms of of a 2nd or 3rd round OL, I heard rumblings that Greco was targeted and we missed out on him after the Lions trade, I wonder if that was so. -

Like many of said, I think McKinney is our fallback. I don't think they actually want him to start I think they would rather one of the younger offensive lineman picked up that slack. The discerning partis that Mazer apparently is concerned about his young offensive lineman.
The thing of it is, no matter which way you look at it this offensive line will still be better than the O line of the last few years. While having Murphy and Long on the same side might scare the coaches, talent wise and athletically they're still better than guys (insert name here) we've had lately.
From this standpoint, I can't see how we can be worried too much. If McKinney is not going to be ready or ready on time then I suppose they'll move Smileyto the left side and fill in one of the younger guys on the right side. As I said before IMHOwill still be better off than the last four or five years.Paul 13 likes this.
