Logan Thomas as reported by several on twitter. Don't know who he is. Don't understand why he is taking up a valuable roster spot. Moore leaving?

I'm a fan of the move. Project, but physically gifted and coming off some decent preseason showings. Gotta fix the accuracy issues he had at VaTech.

I like him as depth. Not sure he will unseat Moore now, but it's certainly possible in the future is he sticks around and improves.

Saving $1 million isn't worth it when you have what Moore brings. He's a veteran and Tannehill loves him.

Why do we need a third QB?
We could use that spot for a Vet Oline or LB.

    Overview

The Virginia prep participated in the U.S. Army Bowl and was the top-ranked tight end prospect in the country. Redshirted in 2009. Saw action in seven games in '10 as a quarterback and wide receiver, completed 12-of-26 passes for 107 yards (84.6 percent) with zero touchdowns and zero interceptions. Ran the ball six times for 22 yards (3.7-yard average) and zero touchdowns, in addition to catching a 2-yard touchdown pass vs. Wake Forest. Started all 14 games at quarterback in '11 and threw for 234-391-3,013-19-10 (60.0) while rushing 153-469-11 (3.1). Set the school record for rushing touchdowns by a QB. Led the Hokies in rushing in '12 with 174-524-9 (3.0) and throwing 220-429-2,976-18-16 (51.3) in 13 starts. Made every start for the Hokies for a third straight season, tossing 227-402-2,907-16-13 (56.5) and rushing 162-344-4 (2.1) in 13 games. Was knocked out of the Sun Bowl early with a head injury. Team captain. Finished his career with 9,103 yards and 53 touchdowns, both school records. Had a 26-14 record in 40 career starts.
    Analysis

    Strengths

Outstanding size, stature and strength -- towers over the line, has natural throwing lanes from the pocket and is able to make plays in the grasp. Athletic -- can climb the pocket, escape and run for the sticks. Load to bring down. Generates easy velocity with a quick, compact release and can make all the throws. Is very competitive and will sell out to make a play. Has upside. Tough and durable -- started 40 consecutive games. Vocal leader. Was the only quarterback to crack a ball speed of 60 mph on the radar gun at the combine and can flat-out rip it. Weaknesses

Plateaued as a sophomore. Uneven performance. Inconsistent footwork and mechanics. Shoddy ball placement. Still developing touch and deep-ball accuracy. Needs to quicken his eyes and expand his field vision. Needs to learn to protect himself -- is not elusive and represents a big target to defenders. Struggled in big games, including a nightmare performance against Alabama. Too careless with the football -- 39 INTs and 23 fumbles as a starter. Career 50-percent passer on third down. Draft Projection

    Rounds 3-4 Bottom Line

Unrefined, strong-armed, sturdy pocket passer who looks the part and has intriguing, raw arm talent, though he is a converted tight end whose inexperience showed throughout a yo-yo career in Blacksburg. Has definite developmental value given his starter-caliber skill set and intangible makeup. Would benefit from coaching continuity, more specifically a QB coach capable of refining his crude talent.

The player we picked up is very raw and needs a lot of development .He is not a threat to Moore IMO .

Maybe he can be re-converted to TE. He has great size and he is athletic as he played QB,WR,TE and even RB at one time or another. Lazor may have a role in mind for him .

It may in 2016, or more likely 2017, when Moore may no longer be here and saves us a draft pick in a developmental QB prospect which is something needed for that time period.

When you have a coach like Bill Lazor, imo you have all the more reason to use a roster spot on a developmental/project QB. There are some teams that use a slot for this kind of player, and we happen to have an OC whose track record with QBs is stellar.

Then why not just sign him to the PS? This team doesn't exactly have great depth and we need all the help we can get on the 53 now. Not a development project.

Very uneven player during his time at VT. Physical skills are there, but very raw and never put things together all the way. I can see how, if developed, he would potentially be similar to RT though and able to step into the offense and do a B version of the same things.

We aren't set yet, so they still may. But #1 reason is always poachage. He may end up there, or not anywhere at all in a few weeks.
Our depth is less about carrying a select # of players at any given position, but carrying the RIGHT players. Our depth issues are more about quality, not quantity IMO. I am only deeply concerned about our LB depth right now, barring a Branden Albert setback. Our lack of LB depth is frightening.

Miami now runs a spread option / read option offense, which is better suited for QBs who can run, like Ryan Tannehill (4.62 speed) and Logan Thomas (4.54 - 4.61 speed). And Tannehill is a former WR, and Logan Thomas is a former TE, so they're both comfortable weaving through traffic.

Matt Moore is a slow runner (4.92 speed), and better suited for a pro style offense.

Some college highlights of QB Logan Thomas:

Kansas City also put in a waiver claim. Had we not had priority and made a claim too, he'd be a Chief now.

"DAVIE, Fla. -- Logan Thomas was far from a stranger to the Miami Dolphinswhen he became available this weekend via the waiver wire.According to Miami general manager Dennis Hickey, the team had its eye on Thomas dating back to the 2014 draft. The Arizona Cardinals selected Thomas in the fourth round, while the Dolphins elected not to draft a quarterback last year.
But when Arizona cut Thomas after just one year, Hickey saw an opportunity to double back.
“We like the skill set, the size, the arm strength and the arm talent,” Hickey said of Thomas. “We saw development from Year 1 to Year 2, and we’re anxious to get [Thomas].”
Hickey believes Thomas can benefit from being in the same quarterback room with Dolphins starter Ryan Tannehill and veteran backup Matt Moore. Thomas threw just nine passes in his rookie year and completed one of them for an 81-yard touchdown. This is the first time in three seasons the Dolphins will begin the regular season with three active quarterbacks."

If I wanted a QB who cant throw, I'd rather have "He that must not be named" that the Eagles cut yesterday. And no I am not interested in him either.

Please, let me say this another way...Is our front office out of their GaDim minds!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arians loved this kid and did everything in the world to help him succeed, he just plain sucks!!! There is no talent here......

and then they wonder why we drink???

  29. dolfan22

dolfan22 Season Ticket Holder Club Member

You said yourself Arians loved this kid , why ? Has to be several resons . KC put in a claim as well . It's a gamble to be sure , maybe not a huge one , but maybe one of some significance but the reward or potential reward is enticing enough for the Dolphins to do this , as it was for the Cardinals to spend a 4th round pick on him .

It isn't undoable , and while not expecting it , they can cut him and add another player down the road.

You guys know he is a third string QB, right? I don't see the reason for the concern from those that are, about this signing. If he is on the field, the season is shot, anyway.

We have depth issues on this team. RT has been durable. Moore is a capable backup. We are only allowed 53 players. It is logical to question this.
