Bears have had the best special teams in football for a while now IMO...solid interview

 

The ST coach is involved with both the O & D and the only coaches that are other than the head coach.

 

Marv Levy and John Harbaugh turned out pretty well.

All I keep reading is he's the Bears' best coach and one of the best coordinators in the league. Not a bad interview at all.

Incidentally, he coached two years under Harbaugh on special teams.

 

I would reserve judgment on head coach until seeing the season. At the end of the day people see Jeff Fisher went to a Super Bowl and lost and may be hungry for that SB ring...so they want him.

If you think about it, we've been searching for a coach since Don Shula retired (was forced out?) after 1995. Wannstedt is still our most successful coach since Shula...not exactly fantastic....so I'm cynical that we'll f--- it up again.

 

As someone who deals with the bottom of the roster, which means lots of annual churn, a requisite part of being a special teams coach is attention to detail and getting guys to buy in.

Here's a solid endorsement from Andy Reid, who hired Toub as well as John Harbaugh, in 2009.

I don't know a ton about the guy other than his units have annually been exceptional and he's highly regarded by fans and coaches. But I like what I read. It's a good interview.

 

Will he bring Devin Hester with him?

 

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the guy comes with some praise from some reliable NFL sources, much like Bowles. Quite a few out there that think he'd be a good HC someday as well. Interesting guy to interview for sure. Glad theyre at least taking a look at some "unknown" up and comers in the coaching ranks as well.

 

Urban Meyer got his start as a ST coach and look what he accomplished in college.

Head coaching is more about the personality than the experience in their previous coaching position. Tony Dungy defensive coach, crappy defense. Sparano Oline coach, crappy oline when HC. Etc. etc.

Toub is a damned good interview, and he's actually the perfect dark horse candidate. I'd be impressed if they picked him.

Only a Dolphins fan would complain about having the most prolific return man in NFL history on their team.

 

The same ones who think a ST coach does nohing are the same ones who forget how ST cost us multiple games a few years ago. If ST coaches weren't important they wouldn;t have them.

 

There is a reason it is said that Wanny's biggest mistake was firing Westhoff.
And there is a reason why many consider him a Hall of Fame coach.

The problem for Ross is that he needs to make a splash with the naming of the next head coach. The Dolphins played their way out of being able to draft Luck or RG3. In fact most of the latest mock drafts have the Dolphins drafting another offensive lineman in the first round. If Ross hires a special teams coach, who has no previous head coaching experience as the Dolphins HC, and Ireland drafts another offensive lineman in the first round, season ticket sales are just going to continue to decline.

The Dolphins need to do everything possible to they can to hire a marque head coach and bring in a top tier QB for next year. Anything less than this will only increase the number of season ticket holders who decide not to renew for next season. This may not be fair to Ross, but Miami fans demand a winner, or at least an exciting team, if you expect them to show up for games. Drafting another offensive lineman and hiring a special teams coach as your new head coach would not seem to excite the fan base or drastically improve the product on the field.

Season ticket holders are watching closely to see if Ross and Ireland really have any idea of how to build a winning football team. If they screw it up this time, season ticket sales may end up being the lowest in the entire NFL.

Maybe...but getting a big name just to get a big name isn't the way to go. We've got to find the right coach.

 

I agree that hiring a coach like John Harbaugh would certainly improve the product on the field. Unfortunately, the only thing Toub and Harbaugh have in common is that they were both special teams coaches. There is absolutely no way of knowing if Toub has the same type of ability as Harbaugh does when it comes to being an NFL head coach.

A solid right tackle would also improve the play of the offensive line. It would not make up for the fact that the Dolphins would still be stuck with backup QB as their starter next season. Moore is a decent QB, but in my opinion he his not the QB this team needs to get to the next level. Perhaps if the Colts release Manning and he signs with the Dolphins, I will be happy with a right tackle in the the first round. Right now though, I would prefer that the Dolphins go after a play maker with their first round selection and try to fill their right tackle position later in the draft or in free agency.

 

The problem isn't that he needs a big name, he needs someone to come in and turn the franchise around. You do that and the seats will fill up. Jimmy Johnson was a big name that got us Wannstadt. Saban was a big score that got us Cameron. Parcells was a big tuna that got us Sparano.

 

Excellent illustration of our plight. Fans keep clamoring for a big name, but when have we ever had success bringing in a big time coach?

Actually I agree with you 100%. A big name coach isn't always the answer. I would be very happy with a up and coming coach, but I feel that the biggest error Ross is making this off season is keeping Ireland as the teams GM. I think the major problem with the Dolphins is in player personal decisions, more than it is in the coaching. I think with a talented GM, Sparano might have turned out to be a much more effective head coach in the NFL.

Ireland to me is the reason this team is still a bottom tier team after the last four years. I don't think he should have anything to do with the hiring of the next head coach. All he is concerned with is having Ross hire a coach who is willing to keep him on as the teams GM. I really don't think he has any interest in hiring a coach who may be a better head coach, but who wants to bring in his own GM to work with.

I hope I am dead wrong, but I just don't see the Dolphins becoming a playoff contending team until Ross finally sees the light and gets rid of Ireland. Even though Bill Polian did not have much success in the draft over the last few years, his overall selections during his time in the NFL have been far better than Ireland's. If I was Ross, I would hire Polian as the teams new GM today. If Ross is so enamored with Ireland that he wants to keep him in the organization, he can always keep Ireland around to supervise the ball boys next year.

 

I agree. Winning will put people in the seats, put a good product on the field and people will come and pay to see it. Getting a name has proven unsuccessful in the past.

 

No way of knowing for sure, but Andy Reid is on record as saying he thinks Toub would make an excellent Head Coach. The tie-in here is that Reid had John Harbaugh and saw the same qualities in him.

 

That's the post-Shula era right there: bail and flail. JJ, Saban, Parcells bail and Wanny, Cam, Sparano flail.

 

I think you partially hit the nail on the head, player evaluation and the players' progress or lack there of is not something that we have seen from all of recent coaches and front offices. For too long it seems that the players selected have not been meshed with what we are doing on the field and have not been 'good enough'. Also for too long we have followed the Baltimore Ravens/ Trent Dilfer philosophy that a caretaker quarterback with a good defense will win games and ultimately a SB. That has cost us but I think coaching is also a factor or at least how our coaches have handled the development of the players because it is heartbreaking the players that have been discarded from this team as being rubbish and then have gone on to other teams and have found more potential or even their full potential and that falls on the coaches and needs to stop.

 

I would be excited with Taub actually...
