The source is Salguero. Here's rotoworld's report: http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5649/reshad-jones
That's a good move but those that have been trying to peg that $36-46 million of cap space probably didn't expect that a few million might have to be used in order to plan ahead and keep Reshad Jones from getting to free agency in 2014.
6.5mil per year sounds good to me. Lock him up! Smart for trying to get him done a little early. Another season of development in a contract year could really get expensive...
I think they'd gladly spend the money on Jones, who looks like a much more valuable player than any of our FAs.
Smart move. Lock up the nucleus of clearly good players whom you want here to make a run alongside Tannehill. Now, is anyone going to mention he was a 5th-round pick, or are we selectively appraising Jeff Ireland's performance?
I perfer to see him do it another year, before signing him to long term deal myself. He had a nice 2012 season, but not much before that.
Did he start before this season? Bell started the last two seasons. Interesting article I found on Jones. He was told he would be a 2nd rounder and he thought he was a 1st. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft10/news/story?id=4796520
Yeah, but then when he goes out a does it again, then he'll want even more money and might want to test free agency. He's earned it so get it done now!
I thought since he was in the 2010 draft it was still a Parcells pick. Or are just the bad picks credited to Parcells and the gems to Ireland?
I know he couldn't have started all 16 games. Culver/Bell were the starters for a few games. Besides, this was only his 3rd year. Not a big deal that he didn't play as well until now.
In 2010 wasn't Parcells basically on his way out an just a consultant, probably not doing much when it came to 5th round selection's. I think the credit would go to Ireland's scouting staff on this one. Anyways who cares who gets the credit, I'm just glad he's turned the corner, let's lock him up. I'm about to get his jersey.
We'll they haven't really had any success with contract extensions, so I'll wait until it actually happens before getting excited.
I'd like to see the final number here but $6.5 million...I mean that's pretty expensive for a safety.
I'd say 5 years at $28-30 million. $8-10 million or so guaranteed. I can't see him getting any closer to Weddle's contract for 1 year of play.
Yes, it is very big for a safety. That's just shy of Ed Reed money. And while Reshad Jones has been very good, he hasn't created enough turnovers to justify THAT level of salary.
Well hopefully they're using some sort of predictive statistics to determine how likely Jones is to sustain his play over the long haul, and basing the contract offer in part on that.
It may have been a Parcells pick, but probably not. The consistent reports from that time were that Parcells concerned himself with the top pick and with a project or two each year. The projects are unknown except for Pat White. In general, though most of the picks after the first round and most of the lower level FAs are probably Ireland. That would include Moore, Wake and Bess among the FAs. The top FAs like Dansby were probably more Parcells. Although Marshall was clearly Ireland's as the reports at the time were about how Ireland had to get Parcell's permission for that trade.
Is it really? It didn't sound like much, but I don't have a good handle on positional value in terms of $$$.
6.5M is a little high but cutting off the field horizontally is a big priority these days. Jones can do that at either safety spot. Its a catch 22..if you wait he may get more money, if you do it now he may not be as good next year. IMO Id do it now because I think the kids a player and have thought that for the last 2+ years
I used to know people in the organization and had heard it from them. I also read the same things in one or more of the three major FL papers and I believe Gil Brandt talked about Parcells' projects on some of his radio shows. But no I don't keep links from 3 to 5 years ago. By now I assumed it was common knowledge that that was what Parcells did.
Pay the man his $$$. 5 yrs 31 million, lock him up for the prime of his career. I know the Broncos wish they had him yesterday.
I don't really understand why safety is not a high pay position. It seems pretty important to me especially in today's NFL. Reshad Jones also plays down in the box quite a bit, as well as covers tight ends and running backs one on one. He's pretty important to our defense and therefore well worth that money. Pay the man!
