Mel McShay draft grades. #1 - Iggles [A] - I heard rumbling of a mad man in Philly took the war room over by force. I think his name was Chip Kelly. Eagles select via Jaguars Marcus Mariota, If it wasn't Chip this would be a C, Mariota isn't close to the QB Winston is but there is hope being reunited with master Kelly. #2 - Cleveland [A++] = The franchise saver is now a Brown. Cleveland wont have to worry about a QB for more than a decade now. Browns select via the Titans Jameis Winston. This could bite Oregon Eagles and Titans in the butt by passing on Winston. #3 - Dolphins [A] - Miami made their intentions very clear throughout the process. Winston and White were their targets, game of chicken throughout the process but they solidify their WR corps with the top WR in the draft. Dolphins select Kevin White. #4 - Raiders [A+] - Well I got one thing right in my mock so far and Raiders getting Williams is a blessing. They get a potential super star on the DL at 4. Raiders take Leonard Williams. #5 - Rams [A] - Titans once again move down maybe they got BK'd but who knows. Was told several teams tried to move here to take the Bama product but the Rams came through. Rams select Amari Cooper. Top 5 is nothing but A's
Well done NYG. Well done. A lot of Giant fans, including this one (theyve been my 2nd favorite team since 85) would be happy
I'm not, everyone has kept relatively close to the usual draft rankings so far. I'll let you know when I get surprised.
I'm honestly a little shocked the pick is being so well-received. Here is my line of thinking since I'm off the clock for a little bit and (as most of you have seen thus far) I value transparency. Buckeye opined in his mock that the Giants options were DE or DE. While yes, I lost JPP, I believe I have an ascending pass rusher in Demonte Moore ready to take on a larger role opposite Robert Ayers, who was playing great before his injury last season. So I wasn't too keen on using a premium pick on a pass rusher, though that decision was made easier by the fact that I simply was not compelled by Ray or Gregory. On top of that, the question marks of those two players lead me to believe the gap between them and the tier two and tier three guys is not nearly as pronounced as the drop of Waynes to even Marcus Peters or Jalen Collins. Yes, I believe in Waynes that much and I salivate at the idea of putting him next to Leon Hall and with two very underrated Giants CB's from the past couple of years in Bowman and McBride. I would have considered Fowler had he dropped one more spot, though it would have been close because I'm not sure how he would perfectly project in Schiano's defense. Even though I'm not really looking for WR, I would have taken Cooper in an instant. At the end of the day though, it came down to two players for me . . . Waynes and Danny Shelton. While I love my young talent at DT, I feel like the gap between Shelton and Malcom Brown is equal to the gap between Waynes and Peters. That's the kind of value I was looking at. I believe firmly in BPA in the first, especially toward the top, Waynes was not only my BPA, but also filled a need. Sebo out.
But he is quick and he played a ridiculous amount of snaps for Washington, which is surprising given his size. I was going to comment on liking the pick by GIK, but I had just commented on liking the Vic Beasley selection by Todd so I didn't want to get people excited that a circle jerk was going to start.
well, it all works though, because you stole a 1st in trading Garrapololol, the 7th pick at that... Garrapololol wasn't worth more than a 2nd rounder... so you actually flipped him for Shelton, a player with second round talent. The circle of life is complete. What should the Pats have done? Well, they were kind of in a tough spot at 7 here... trade down I suppose. But seriously Shelton... watched him at the Senior Bowl during the one on ones... sure, it was a pass rush showcase... which he's a big guy, I get it, it's not his forte there. But he was being handled. Not even getting off the line of scrimmage. So you're drafting a guy here at 7 who isn't IMO a 3 down player. He can play the run though... I'll concede that.
It's been a busy day here in Philadelphia. Fred Jackson and Doug Martin are both on the block. Both have extremely reasonable contracts. Looking primarily for picks. PM me if interested.
neither pass rusher fits NY's defense though. Cant try to replace JPP with either of those guys w/o getting gouged in the run. Need somewhat of a specific fit with them.
I liked your Beasley pick. Early in the process I thought he would last to #14, but when he didn't I traded down. Then back up again for Gregory
