Says who? I always think it's kind funny when people claim draft picks are reaches. I remember in one GML where I took Jerod Mayo in round 2 and people claimed it was a reach. Then he went early in round 1 and the pick was nominated (and might have won) best pick in the voting. Where these guys are projected to be picked should have little bearing on whether they are considered a good pick or not.
You're entitled to your opinion, but I think Cook has the chance to be a franchise QB. My only question with him is character. Taking him is a hedge against Tannehill. If Tannehill doesn't work out you have a legit QB prospect. If he does, you have a tradable asset that could net you a nice return. I think Cook will be gone by the time Miami picks in round 2, honestly. Getting him in round 3 is a steal IMO.
Yeah I think the DL class is very good, especially the interior. I think the RB class is very strong. I also think there are some interesting developmental QBs. The DB class is solid too.
With all due respect, I had to laugh NYG.... FinO coming in late and picking an already picked player is some **** you would do 2 years ago
True but I think this year the DT depth is especially ridiculous. Of course the media is hyping it up but even the tape backs up their bluster.
Yeah I'm not quite so sure of that. I'm not his biggest detractor or his biggest fan...just kind of meh. If the Dolphins picked him in the top 75 or so I'd be kid of upset partially because I am a Tannehill believer and partially because I just dont have a lot of conviction on Cook as he's my 4th ranked QB after Wentz, etc.
Well, the Redskins took a backup QB in round 4 and that worked out pretty well for them in the end. Same school too. Yes, it's a round later, but if you wouldn't take one in round 3, I'm guessing you wouldn't do so in round 4 either.
Of all the QBs in the draft, I probably like Cook the most. With that said, while I find there to be plenty of value in selecting him in rd 3, I'd be pretty disappointed (initially) in a Dolphins draft that netted us Booker and Cook in rds 2 and 3, unless there was some extra picks mixed in there as well.
Damn, was really hoping Sterling Shepard was going to fall to me at 91. I think he's seriously underrated right now and has the route running and quickness to be a quality #2/slot in this league. Back to the drawing board..
An excerpt from My write up for Braxton at 55. I would've taken sterling there if Braxton was gone...I will hurt because of this ....great pick schisno
Sheppard is a ridiculous steal at this point IMO. Dixon is also a really good pick. Had I known he would be there in round 3, I probably wouldn't have taken Booker in round 2.
I'll admit I don't think my Dolphins draft is ideal, but I'd be content if that's how it went down. With Booker, it came down to having a strong need at RB. With that need, and missing out on Elliot in round 1, I felt I really wanted to come out of the draft with Booker, Henry, or Dixon. I didn't feel confident that any of the three would be there at my next pick, and I think Booker is a really good player. There are other backs I like in this draft, but they all come with quite a bit more risk. I think the Dolphins need to try and minimize risk at that position. Ideally I would have traded down and taken one of those three, but I do feel that in time Booker will prove to be very worthy of a pick that high even if I could have gotten him a little later. With Cook, at that point of the draft I don't think you can pass on a player with that kind of ability at the most important position on the field, especially when there is a little bit of uncertainty at the QB position on your team. I think it's a good hedge that could pay off in one of a few different ways moving forward.
So where in there does it talk about Dolphins fans being pleased with a 3rd rounder being used on a backup QB? I looked through the last few pages, and no one explicitly said that you didn't get good value (in a vacuum) so I'm not sure what the article will do to sway people's opinions on the selection. If your 3rd rounder never plays, is it actually a good pick? I'm not saying that would definitely be the case, but usually you want production out of a top 75 selection, not just insurance.
Well... post surgery and Im sitting around bored and loopy for the next few hours. Time to actually watch some draft film!!!
Do these specifically say the value was poor? No, but they suggest that. No matter the position, getting a 1st round caliber player in round 3 should be a win, no? If you do so at the most important position on the field, I think it's an even bigger win even if he never plays a down for you. Because if that 3rd rounder never plays for you, but you gain piece of mind at the QB position and then parlay that player into a 1st or 2nd round pick I would say the original pick is a good one.
FWIW, Cook in the 3rd is fine value. I personally probably would have went with Garnett knowing our problems.
I've seen third rounders picked to be back-ups. And I have no problem with that. I'm just saying there's not a lot of QB's that strike me as starter material in this class.
I think it's poor from the perspective of Miami, maybe not value as a whole but it does nothing to improve Miami right away and typically 3rd rounders can contribute right away. Our interior line is **** and putting it off another round just means trouble for the current QB Tannehill. Still time to draft one but, what are the chances they can be plugged and played day 1?
Its also a factor that Matt Moore is content working on his tan while holding a clip board knowing that in reality he could probably start in a fourth of the league
You guys are most definitely entitled to your opinions. That what this whole process is all about. I was just defending the pick. If you don't think Cook is starter material, though, then that would seem to indicate you don't think the value is good there, which again, you are completely entitled to think. Personally, I think he can be a very good player or I wouldn't have taken him there with other needs. While 3rd rounders CAN contribute right away, I'm not sure I would say they typically do. Many 3rd round picks never end up amounting to anything, and those who do usually don't give you a whole lot in year 1. As far as the interior of the line, I think you can change that to the guard position because Pouncey has center locked down pretty well. Gase obviously likes Bushrod and saw enough in him in Chicago to bring him here to play guard. So that leaves Urbik, Turner, Thomas, and Douglas to fill in one spot on the line. Ideally one of those guys can give you good enough production. If you don't believe in those names, well, two of them were taken in the 3rd round, so taking one here doesn't necessarily fix the problem. I could also argue that if you believe you can get production from a rookie guard taken in round 3, then you have almost as good a chance to get rookie production from one taken in round 4. We're talking about 32 players being taken in between those picks, and somewhere around 2-5 of those picks being guards. Of course, there is also the FA route, which is probably safer to help you out at that position right away. There are a couple decent players still out there, and more will probably shake free after the draft. So with all that being said, I see a player who I feel represents fantastic value at the most important position on the field in a round where you have less than a 50/50 shot statistically of finding a good player. To me, that is the right situation to pull the trigger, especially when you don't know you have the position solidified currently (even though I am a Tannehill supporter).
