Draft Empire mock 12/24/08

If the best DT in college football comes out as a redshirt sophomore and he lasts to the 24th pic, I'll be staggered. And at 292lbs, I'll be even more staggered if he's Miami's pick.

Smith is the media darling isn't he?

Clint Sintim wasn't in the first round at all and as for Heyward-Bey being drafted before Knowshon Moreno...........I would have to question that one. Talent wise, to me, there is no comparison.

Moreno is the best back in the draft IMO. Although I have an awful lot of time for Glen Coffee.

As for Smith being the media darling; he truly is. Not that I'm at a ratings stage, but I'd have to say that of the top 8 tackles, he's maybe 6th on my list.

Looking forward to seeing Garrett Reynolds plays against Jason Worilds this evening.

Reynolds is vastly underrated.

Watching the FAU - C. Michigan game last night, I liked C. Michigan's LT # 74. Hartline I think his name is. He played well last night, got to the second level if memory serves me right.

Brian Hartline isn't it?

He is a good player. Needs to show same ability at the all star games, otherwise the level of comp will follow him around.

What a great play by Hakeem Nicks. Uses his head to fend off the defender and then displays full concentration despite ball being tipped and finishes off with strength. He's not too shabby of a blocker either.

EDIT: There he goes again! Displaying the YAC and the strength.

If there's a better wide receiver prospect that uses his head to get open on routes, I haven't seen him.

I agree. We talk up all these fancy dans like Oher and Jason Smith and Monroe and Britton but Reynolds is down and dirty and rugged and hard nosed. Didn't do his cause any good when he fell on his keester on Hakeem Nick's first touchdown, but still.

Three things that really stand out for me with Nicks are: route running and the way he sets up corners with his shoulders and head; his speed - he's a long strider and covers the ground really quickly for a big man; and his hands. He's a hand catcher with great concentration.

He's a fabulous player. Now if we were going WR in the late part of round 1, I'd be thrilled to take him. Thrilled.

Absolutely and those three stand out in this game. He's a very good player. Now I haven't noticed it yet but the analysts are saying he doesn't cover up the ball and has had some fumbling issues this year. I haven't seen them though.

Also, Pat White has thrown some mighty good deep balls today. He stepped up in the pocket when pressured and delivered a beautiful pass over the DB on the third touchdown I believe it is. It'll be something to watch if or when he takes part in the quarterback drills at the practices and/or combine.

And as soon as I say this, he throws an interception. Have to look off the coverage man, that's the second time I've seen him do it today.

frankly, if Laurinaitis is there by the time we pick, I have a hard time Ireland-Parcells would pass on a multiple year all-american linebacker. He's as proven as they come in this draft.

I didn't like the way he held up the ball at the 10 yard line after the tip on the 1st touchdown. Loved the strength he showed to score, but in the NFL, that's a forced fumble and the defences ball.

There's some valid concern that Laurinaitis is a way better college baller than NFL prospect. Parcells and Ireland fell into that trap already with Bobby Carpenter. I don't think they'll make the same mistake twice.

Yes, I saw that. Reminded me of DeSean Jackson's antics in Philadelphia. I thought they were referring to something else?

He's had a pretty mediocre senior year, he has horrible issues getting off blocks at times and on release, he has really lacked the footspeed to get outside. I thought earlier in the year that he might get moved to WLB in a 4-3, but that lack of game film foot speed worries the heck out of me.

A possible MLB I forgot to mention was of course Brian Cushing, who will be closely monitored. Can't consider Aaron Curry because he'll be long gone, despite his ability to play in or out.

The ball was thrown behind Nicks so he reached back, grabbed it, put it behind his back and switched to the other hand then finally getting a first down after he shedded a tackle.
