Billick likes Ryan, who has a nice touch and is a leader. The other early draft picks — Flacco, Louisville's Brian Brohm (Green Bay Packers) and Michigan's Chad Henne (Miami Dolphins) — all have "nicks," as Billick put it.

Dan Henning, a quarterback guru who coached with nine NFL teams, fell in love with a free agent named Jake Delhomme. He had been cut three times by the New Orleans Saints. It wasn't Delhomme's arm that thrilled Henning but his ability to manage the game.

"His footwork needs improving," Henning once said. "He floats around that pocket sometimes like Ali in the ring. But he has the mentality of a cornerback; if something goes wrong, it doesn't affect his next play. He's willing to come back and take a shot on the next play."
