This is a Scott Wright article not my own, and while I dont even like Wright, he makes a strong argument. Will it apply to Henne? Who knows, but the odds are against him.
Note: This was not made to start an argument or be viewed as smacking the Phins its simply to spark discussion, I like Henne and reviewed him favorably in my draft guide.

Good read and I do see Wright's points. The one QB that stands out, Brees, really should've been a first rounder and I mean should've been drafted by us instead of Fletcher. With quality scouting and a bit of luck, I don't think drafting in the 1st round really deserves the stigma it gets.

We'll probably see 3-4 QB's drafted in round 1 in next years draft.

The reason more and more QBs are being drafted in the 2-3 range is simply because the overall crop is not that good. There are certainly individual gems, but the overall quality of draft-eligible QBs is declining. There are some serious #1 overall QB busts out there: Michael Vick, Alex Smith, David Carr, Tim Couch. Those guys have set their teams back by quite a bit a bit. Then you have the general first round busts: JP Losman, Rex Grossman, Byron Leftwich, Ryan Leaf, Kyle Boller, Joey Harrington, Patrick Ramsey, Cade McNown, Akili Smith, possibly Jason Campbell, possibly Matt Leinart. (In four years, when this same topic is broached, Matt Ryan's name will go here.)
Drafting a quarterback in the first round is risky business these days. I can count on one hand the amount of first round QBs who have worked out recently: Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer, Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, maybe Philip Rivers.
That said, the trouble is not when you draft a quarterback, it's which quarterback you take, it's how you develop them, and it's how they were developed in college. College football is less about being the NFL minor leagues and more about doing their own thing. Those programs are arguably more competitive than the NFL. (Not as talented, but more competitive.)
Quarterbacks will continue to be taken lower and lower until they begin producing again. We're a far cry from the class of '83.
But for what it's worth, Matt Stafford could actually work out as a first round pick next year.Coral Reefer and texanphinatic like this. -
One thing that might work a bit in a lower rounders favor is the fact that not so much pressure to produce might be heaped upon them from the start. Also, we might be seeing QBs going about where they should, instead of having an inflated value.
Granted, its a hugely important position, but if the talent doesnt justify it, why pass up a guy with superior talent who will almost certainly succeed, a guy like Patrick Willis come strongly to mind, over a QB your hoping will turn out to justify a spot you might really be taking him to high at. -

I thought I saw that written over and over again by those that were adamant we pick a QB this last draft. -

Put the list of non-1st round QBs who dont; make it and the list would be substantial. Of course there are going to be 1st round busts. But there are 1st round busts of every position, not just QBs. Teams should just give up their first round picks then. That list is a good list and it's just the 2nd round.
Regarding Ryan, gotta disagree there Des. I think he's going to be a good'n. It was just one game, and it was just one pass, but it was his first ever pass, and it was a beaut!
