The odds seem right to me. I see the Dolphins finishing behind the Patriots and Jets again next season and in a battle with the Bills to avoid the cellar in the AFC East. I think the Dolphins are at least two years away and possibly three years, from being a legitimate playoff contender in the AFC.

 

No we'll be noticeably better than the Jets this season. That team is about to become a train wreck. We're not three years away from being a playoff contender, that's ridiculous. Some people really overestimate what it takes just to contend for the playoffs.

 

We're a QB away. Minus the QB position, this team is better at just about every position than the 2008 squad, IMHO. If a QB like Manning can fall into our laps just like Pennington did, providing he's healthy I see us having a very good shot at the playoffs.

 

Not out of the realm of possibilities , schedule is ok , Yets are scrambling or should be , one signing and the whole attitude surrounding the franchise gets higher than Cheech and Chong circa 1972.

I think it's no coincidence that the one season we made the playoffs was the season we had Pennington at QB. I don't disagree with you about how difficult it is to make the playoffs. But a veteran pro bowl QB could make all the difference in the world. I think even Peyton Manning with slightly reduced arm strength is a cerebral enough guy to get us to the playoffs just like Pennington did.

 

I don't disagree this team's overall talent is better than in 2008, but doesn't the fact that we are changing both the offensive and defensive schemes dramatically, which will create even more holes in the starting group of players, not to mention the backups and package players. How can you relate last year's #6 D with this year's and we don't even have much more than a clue as to who the safeties will be, who the DL will be, who the 3rd CB will be, who the situational pass rusher will be, and where Dansby, Burnett, Wake and Misi will line up ?? On offense at this particular time (b4 FA), we don't know who the RG and RT will be, whether RI fits as the LG in Philbin's scheme, and who the QB will be...yet. I don't see a very good correlation to what we accomplished last season as an indicator of what we will/can do this coming year...

 

While I agree with your assessment of adding Peyton, the unknown is whether the arm will be there on a consistent basis (one of the issues with this type of injury is the inability of that arm to maintain muscle memory). We also don't know WHEN that he'll be ready to go. Is that now, May, July, ever?? Having gone thru this same type of thing (different injury) with other guys (Green, Penny, Cpep) why we'd want to try it again with Peyton. I'll fully agree that the best case scenario is 10x better than any of those other guys, but the downside of him not getting enough back physically is just as devastating, maybe more so...

Some people have losing so beat into them they don't realize that franchises with real leadership and direction can put together competitive teams practically overnight. We will compete for the playoffs this season even if Matt Moore is the starter. I guarantee it. Point, laugh, do whatever you want. If we are not in the mix with a REALISTIC chance of earning a playoff berth up until at least mid December feel free to bump this thread and tell me what an idiot I am. I won't hold it against you. I have a lot of confidence that while not great the team is better than what we saw last season. With a real football coach running things I have higher hopes than before.

I really do hope you are right. I certainly have a better feeling this year than I have in a long while. Something about the selection even feels better than the Parcells or Jimmy Johnson news. I dont expect a super bowl or even play off win, but just getting to the dance and seeing some plaguing issues fixed up would be so wonderful.

 

That is why I stated that with a healthy Manning, the Dolphins would have a chance of making the playoffs next season. I don't see any other QB the Dolphins have now or have shown an interest in that could lead the Dolphins to the playoffs this coming season. Matt Moore plays okay against the bottom tier teams on the Dolphins schedule, but I don't see him as the QB to lead this team into the playoffs.

If they sign Flynn, there is a huge question mark as to whether he is really a starting caliber QB in the NFL. Even if he does work out in the long run, I just don't see him coming in and leading the Dolphins to the playoffs in his first year as a starter.

If they make the trade I really want and get RG3 in the draft, I think it will take RG3 at least his first year to get used to playing in the NFL. Once he gets through his first year and the talent around him improves with two drafts and two free agency periods, I could easily see the Dolphins being a legitimate playoff contender in 2013.

A healthy Manning or at least a 85% of what he was Manning, is the only chance I see of the Dolphins possibly making the playoffs next season. I see every other option the Dolphins have for the QB position next year as possibly improving the position down the road, but not enough to enhance the Dolphins chances for the playoffs in 2012.

If Manning doesn't sign, (which I don't think he will), and the Dolphins don't make a trade for RG3, and Flynn does sign but doesn't end up being a top quality NFL QB, I could easily see the Dolphins remaining a bottom tier team for several more years. Without a top tier QB, the Dolphins just don't have the talent level on the team to win games against the better teams in the NFL. This off season is all about getting that top tier QB and that is why I want the Dolphins to do everything in their power to trade up and select RG3.

 

Unless we make a big move offensively we aren't just finishing behind the Jets we are finishing behind Buffalo as well.
