no real loss, iyam. ----- Florida is reaching into the professional ranks for its next defensive coordinator to replace Charlie Strong. The Gators have hired Miami Dolphins linebackers coach George Edwards to run the defense, according to a team source. Edwards, 42, has coached with the Dolphins since 2005 and has spent the last 12 years in the professional ranks, including stints with Cleveland, Washington and Dallas. Edwards doesn’t appear to have direct ties to coach Urban Meyer, but he did get his start at Florida in 1991 after playing under Steve Spurrier at Duke. Edwards was the Washington Redskins defensive coordinator in 2003. Edwards coached at Duke and Georgia in the mid-90s. Edwards was also in the running the Gators’ defensive coordinator job in 2003 under Ron Zook. Between Meyer and interim coach Steve Addazio, the Gators have made three hires this week — Edwards, running backs coach Stan Drayton from Syracuse and Stanford’s D.J. Durkin, who can coach linebackers, defensive ends or special teams. The staff might be set unless there are any departures planned.
Agreed,no real loss there. He gets to move up to DC and I think we honestly would have made some changes at LB coaching staff anyways.Win-Win for both parties.
