It's probably 100% a matter of timing. I don't think either party (Microsoft, IBM, or Sony) had bad intentions in any of it. As for RRoD, I know you were joking... But I figured I'll clear it up anyways. It's the GPU that fries 360s, not the CPU.
True in the majority of cases. I've heard one or two stories of the CPU going haywire, not necessarily frying it though.
