I think the Browns were off base on their assessment. I think even the maturity thing from a starting stand point is a bit overblown as well. From all the things I read it seemed that they for the most part would mention that he is a charismatic leader. It's showed already in OTA's with him texting Egnew plays and giving tidbits here and there to players. I think he will do just fine as a leader as long as he can produce. As for the starting experience, yes he only had 19 starts but he would attend QB meetings while playing receiver and stepped in just fine and played well. Yes I would of liked to have seen a better sample size but I think it's as a big of an issue.

I think the Browns are doing some damage control from the reports of Holmgren crying like a baby about the Redskin's trade and that they really wanted Kendall Wright.

regardless who cares which QB the Browns preferred....the bottomline is that @ #8 when Miami was on the clock (with Weeden still there) Miami selected Tannehill.
Do I really care what Browns thought of Tannehill? nope..not a lick.
Just like all the GMs and owners back in the day trying to explain why they passed on Marino and what they didnt like about Marino, etc.

The Browns it appears, are doing a sell job. Now they also say they thought RG3 was too small, and Flynn was no better than McCoy.

The whole thing about Griffin is interesting because Holmgren did complain that the Browns' offer wasn't really entertained. But, that happened BEFORE the draft, as I recall...so I wouldn't be so sure you can just for sure say what was behind those statements. For all we know it could've been an effort to convince everyone they were trying for a mobile guy like Tannehill or Russell Wilson.
As for them wanting Kendall Wright, that part was true. However, even if they took Kendall Wright, they planned on trading up into the 1st round to take Weeden. Either way, Weeden was destined to go to the Browns in the 1st round that day.
Still, a lot of this is just positioning. Brandon Weeden is forcing their hand at QB even faster than they imagined. They went from talking about "competition" to talking about the Sam Bradford model where they named Bradford the starter at the start of training camp and had him take all the snaps. They're trying to back pedal and explain themselves but there's no denying a change has occurred because Brandon Weeden has just been too good. So they're making efforts to get everyone behind Weeden, between the players, fans, coaches and media. That involves taking shots at the other QBs they could've had. -

It did happen before the draft, which makes it even more relevant for being behind the statement.
In the court of public perception, Weeden still looks like their third option, with one option being a wide receiver. -

I don't agree with that at all. Most things a team says about draft prospects before the Draft are aimed. You have no idea what the Browns' aims where when they decided to let it be known they went hard after Robert Griffin (which may or may not be factually true). They don't have incentive to tell the truth about it right now, but they didn't have incentive to tell the truth of it back then, either.
Every Browns fan knows by now that the Kendall Wright thing was irrelevant because the Browns planned to trade back up into the 1st round for Weeden. All Browns fans know full well that the Browns were walking out of that draft with Weeden, even if you didn't. -

Eh, do agree 19 starts is not a lot of experience, but keep in mind Mallet had the same things said about him.
IMO, most of the offce types in the NFL are utter weenies, ball less, gutless, wimps imo
I bet the opinion about our draft, in league offices, is Ireland was feeling the heat and took risks on guys he normally would not have, talented physically but w/"issues"

I've made my feeling about Tannehill fairly clear I think.
I have alot of doubts about him, but leadership is one thing I'm not worried about. -
It doesn't really surprise me bro. What they should of done is just keep their pie holes shut. But if they are to say something they cant exactly say they wanted him after taking weeden.

Exactly this. There are a lot of similarities. A former super bowl head coach who comes into a GM job and gets way too much respect for a guy who has never done the job. Both seem to not place the appropriate value on skill players and still believe in the ground and pound mentality of the late 80's to mid 90's. Both obnoxious fat asses who spitefully build teams devoid of talent on offense that will never win in today's NFL. You wouldn't expect it as much from Holmgren since his wins came on Farve's arm. Both are dinosaurs. At least ours is finally extinct although I'm not sure if Ireland has evolved past that bird thing dinosaur...

Funny to see all the discussion about this. Regardless of what anyone else thinks of these QBs in round 1, the two franchises largely impacted their future based on their QB selections. Only time will tell.
It is funny to me that any of us can say something one way or another about Tannehill's leadership qualities. We weren't in the huddle or film room or locker room and we weren't in the interviews. It could very well be he has good leadership or he might not. We all better hope he does and that the Browns are wrong. Or it could be he actually had a bad interview with the Browns. That happens. All the different conspiracy theories are about as valid as a WWF story.
There's always too many Ad hominems in such discussions. One can't judge the Browns current opinion based on the past two decades. They've had their present group in for just a couple of years. That's like judging what the present coaching staff does based on the failures of Wanny & Cameron. The Colt McCoy comments make zero sense. It's not like he was a #8 pick in the draft. The drafted him #85 and they didn't have another QB. One could say the same thing about Miami and Chad Henne (who was drafted a round higher than McCoy).
But, I would think that the Dolphins OC would have some say as to his leadership qualities if that's a big deal.
There are some talented QB's who are bad leaders (Philip Rivers) that can hurt a team, imo, even while putting up great stats. But, the bottom line is, a QB has to be able to make plays and be a decent human being who respects the guys he plays with. If he can do that, leadership will come through. If he can't make plays, it doesn't matter if he gives a Patton-esque or Churchillian calibre speech before every game or in every huddle - the team will not succeed. -
Well, we "know" Tannehill will play a bunch in the preseason, that should be a good preview.

I like Weedon, but IMO Cleveland is battling a perception problem (that they settled) and this is just spin.

I think it's mostly just spin too, but given some of the 2nd half failures Texas A&M had this past season I could see where some in the Cleveland organization might have had questions about his leadership, even if those questions might have been answered positively with a little research. But since we hired Sherman, we most likely had the best source to go for those answers.

The Jets thought Todd Blackledge was a better prospect than Dan Marino.
Every organization has their educated opinions on prospects. In the end it's just an educated guess and a gamble on any prospect.
Tannehill may very well not work out. It's tough to hone skills you should have had more of a chance to at the collegiate level in the pros. That said, I'm not going to worry about the Browns organization's decision to pass on him. Were not talking about the best organization in the league at finding talent here. -
I actually agree that Flynn is no better than McCoy. I think Russell Wilson eventually beats out Flynn. The RGIII quotes are laughable.

Their motivations are questionable but their statements were not nearly as unreasonable as people would like to make out.
1. Ryan Tannehill doesn't light up a room with his personality or leadership
2. Robert Griffin PLAYS small, and does have a problem trying to show off his speed unnecessarily
3. Matt Flynn has to torque the ball quite a bit to get NFL velocity and his deep balls draw down speed quickly
Just because it comes out in a distasteful manner doesn't mean there's no truth behind these criticisms. -
All to be determined at the NFL level.
But the "distasteful manner" was strictly (as has been pointed out) to pump up their selection of Weeden. As if he is the end all be all best QB in the draft (aside from Luck I quess since they left Luck out of their crosshairs). And Browns opinions dont carry much weight as proof is in the pudding of past decisions, even if a new regime, they are same boat we are in...prove it on the field vs. keep talking about it as if they are the Oracle or something. Words are wind as they say.
Where is their critique and criticism of Weeden? Is he without it? Of course not...!
Point is, their opinion outside of how they see the Browns decision making is meaningless to any organization that in fact did select RG3, Flynn, and especially Miami's selection of Tannehill (especially with Weeden also available at that time, etc). -
And Weedon is a limited athlete with a short window. Every QB has limitations and legit criticisms that can be claimed against them (except maybe Luck, LOL), but that doesn't mean that Cleveland isn't being disingenuous. That's the part that rubs me wrong. I love Weedon as a prospect and Cleveland should be thrilled they got him, but I don't like that they're trying to prop him up by bad mouthing the others and I don't believe that they weren't legitimately trying to trade up for RG3. In fact, the RG3 comments are probably the ones that bugged me the most. And that's despite the fact that I expressed a similar concern (that he was vulnerable to injury since he takes too many hits). It bugs me b/c it's obvious that they preferred RG3 enough that they were willing to pay a high price to trade up for him. IMO they should just say that there were several prospects they liked and that Weedon was one of them. And that they're thrilled with how it worked out.
