The first sack-fumble on Tannehill.
Tannehill should be ditching that ball earlier (assuming he knew he had someone incoming), however, note:
The red flag on Gesicki was always his blocking. In this play it's a bad block from Gesicki that allows Jets #33 a clear shot at RT17. I think Gesicki bites on a subtle juke and it's game over. If Gesicki has a bit better sense of where he is he sets a new edge and the sack doesn't happen.
Now, the point isn't to blame Gesicki. He's learning. It seemed noteworthy to me, though, to see that whoever drew that one up wasn't afraid to have Gesicki out there essentially covering Ryan's blindside. Word is the Gesicki is pouring effort into his blocking game and improving.
Good to see the coaches are putting trust in players, giving them opportunities, and this hopefully indicates they really do believe Gesicki can become a decent blocking TE too. This was game two for the rookie. If he does improve to become a decent blocker, then that means good things for Tannehill and the offense.resnor likes this. -
The TD to AJ Derby was such a beautiful play. Great protection by the line obviously, but it looked like Derby at that point was Tannehill's 5th or 6th read. He looked him off and then came back to him. Brilliant throw. Brilliant play.

2:40 the Wilson TD.
Not an RT comment, but if that was last year and Landry was catching the ball tehre’s no way it would have been a TD. Landry would have been caught from behind by the defender covering him, and maybe fights through the tackle for a first down, but definitely would have been stopped before the goal line.
4:30 AJ Derby TD
Impressive protection by the OL. The jets pass rush is good but the OL was pretty stout all day, and this was a good example.
6:15 Screen pass to Grant.
On a couple of the screen passes, but this one especially it really felt that if the receiver evaded the last tackle there was a lot of open field in front of them. Some screens had no break out threat and were more elongated hand offs, but with Grant Wilson and Amendola I think we’ll see a few screens break out for huge yardage this year. And I, along with many, was highly critical of ghe screen game last year.
6:54 Missed bomb to Wilson.
I put this miss on both Tannehill and Wilson. Tannehill probably put a little too much on it and maybe put it a bit closer to the sideline than intended. Wilson lost speed because of his awkward tracking of the ball, which may have been because he ran his route a little infield of where he should have been.
7:something 3rd and 19 to Gore
Very good work by Tannehill to avoid the rush. Not so good work on delivering the ball to Gore.
Some overall comments
The jets pass rush and secondary are strong. They will wreck a lot of QB’s this season. Almost all the receptions were on tight coverage, and it was a difficult day for the receivers to get separation. Todd Bowles showed a lot of creativity in creating pressure from blitzes and disguised coverages.
Despite some poor accuracy from RT there were no opportunities for an interception. RT was holding onto the ball a long time because the jets secondary was doing a very good job of coverage. -

That wasn’t Tanny’s intention. He mentioned in a presser that it sort of came out wonky, but Gore made a great play on the ball.
Also noteworthy: Gore wasn’t even suppose to be on that side or out. He was suppose to be inside blocking on the opposite side (per Gase).
So good on Tanny to improvise, though with a cruddy pass, and good on Gore to secure it and get the first even though he was technically out of position.
Also, and possibly related to why the pass came out the way it did: does Tanny seem to have WAY too much “stick ‘em” on the palm of his throwing hand?? I mean, the inside of his hand looks like he put on self-tanning lotion before the game and forgot to wash his hand!KeyFin likes this. -
Even if it wasn't his intent, it worked out perfectly. Any other way that ball does not get out there. It was a great pass.

The big thing for me on that play was that it wasn't scripted. Gore realized that #1 he had nobody to block and #2 tannehill was in trouble. He released just a few steps then started tracking RT as a potential outlet. Meanwhile, Tannehill recognized it after scanning the entire field and got the pass there in a hurry. To me, the ugly throw part doesn't matter because the ball was about to be thrown away. This was 100% Gore being a smart vet from start to finish.mbsinmisc, Pauly and Dol-Fan Dupree like this.

If he would have connected with Wilson on that deep route man, that woulda made his stats look pretty huge that day.

Hahaha 5:02, fumble. I swear it was randomly chosen! God almighty that was a terrible play. Gotta do something to get that unblocked defender covered or fooled, and then for god's sake either toss it or tuck it without waiting till the last possible second. Know the situation - it's first down. Incompletion is no biggie. Sack is big yards lost but two shots to get it back. Thankfully that's about as bad a play as you will see and it's not common. Still, gotta cut them down more if you want to be a top QB and make a run.

I think it was designed - counting on either the defender getting fooled by the misdirection or a look-off or something from THill. He wasn't and went straight in for THill, who kind of pumped then just lost the ball. He had to either pass it or throw it away instead of a pump there.

7:24 Pocket awareness by Tannehill. A+
8:00 Taking a knee on 2 min warning to run the clock out, Sportsmanship.
New England would have taken that 7 points to smear it in the face and stat it up.
Over all Miami made so many mistakes they kept the Jets in the game but a W is all good. -
