Soliai, 33, is a former fourth-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2007. He spent seven years in Miami before signing a five-year, $33 million contract including $14 million guaranteed with the Falcons in 2014. Soliai lasted just two years in Atlanta before he was released last March. The Panthers signed him to a two-year, $7 million contract with $3 million guaranteed a few weeks later. Soliai was set to make a base salary of $1 million for the 2017 season. According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Soliai will free up $2.5 million of available cap space while creating $1 million in dead money. In 2016, Soliai appeared in 10 games for the Panthers and recorded eight tackles, no sacks and a fumble recovery.
You have to wonder how much he has left in the tank. He's become a rotational, depth type of player these days. Plus, we have a younger version of him already in Phillips. As a cheap, veteran 4th DT, I'd be interested, but not for any guaranteed money.
He doesn't fit, I don't think. You're looking for someone who can play the run on the way to the quarterback.
As I said in the other thread on this guy.. I'm a no on Soliai. Not just on fit, but also on his age. I'm not sure he's what we're looking for anymore.
Let's face it, the low end free agents can wait. Will be interesting to see what Miami does by freeing up more money who they are in play for. Mike got tells me automatically based on their draft position, they got assigned a defense of end to oppose Wake. It's still leaves them with let's just say $40-$50 million to spend not including Kenny stills. So what I think is Miami by getting rid of Albert is going to make a play for a couple guards. Could we realistically say that the draft will be filled with linebackers? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Actually, signing the right veterans who have been released by other teams can be a very smart move. It lets you get a jump on the offseason, fill roster spots, and they don't count against the compensatory pick formula. New England and others have been doing this for a while now. That being said, they need to be the right players. I think most of us agree that he probably doesn't fit that tag.
