Ex-NFL player's 'purgatory'

SI's Peter King got his hands on an advance copy of the former Panther lineman's upcoming book, and Jason Peter has quite a story to tell. At one point during his career, the guy was popping about 80 painkillers and sleeping pills a day, and that's not even the whole story.

King gave us this excerpt from Hero: A Memoir of the Underground, which comes out July 8th:
When you swallow sixty Vicodin, twenty sleeping pills, drink a bottle of vodka, and still survive, a certain sense of invulnerability stays with you. When you continue to use drugs with the kind of reckless determination that I did, the limit to how much heroin or crack you can ingest is not defined by dollar amounts but by the amounts your body can withstand without experiencing a seizure or respiratory failure ... when you still wake up to same dirty sky over you as the night before, you start to think that instead of dying, maybe your punishment is to live -- to be stuck in this purgatory of self-abuse and misery for eternity.

And he went through prostitutes as thoroughly as he went through drugs. The prostitutes were "so numerous that his Madame at a high-rolling Manhattan ran out of girls for him."
Eighty pills a day, on top of cocaine, crack, heroin, GHB, and every hooker in Manhattan. Peter makes Robert Downey Jr. look Amish.
