Q. Let’s first talk about the Jets game. What has been the message to the players this week?
TS: I had two messages this week to the players. One of them is that we need to put all of our focus, all of our energy, into one game and not worry about anything else. Just worry about this game in front of us. The other is, it’s going to be physical. I think every game is physical, but I think the Jets team we are playing will be one of the most physical teams on our schedule and to fight physical you have to be physical

Q. Somebody recently suggested that route running by receivers has become a lost art in this league? You look at replays around the league and you just don’t see that many crisp, sharp routes by receivers. Agree?
TS: There is validity to that if you allow it to be. If you don’t spend the time dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s, then you can let that happen. Sometimes what should be a 14-yard route turns into a 12-yard route and you cover yourself by doing that. You think two yards isn’t a lot, but it is a lot to get a guy off of his spot. If you and I were standing in a phone booth and I had two yards to work with, that becomes a lot of land. So route depth, and maybe the art of setting a defensive back, is something that can get lost if you allow it to.
Vincent Jackson and Roy Williams come to mind here.
Also, when is a reporter going to ask him why he isn't using Ronnie Brown in the pass game? It's like the fans on this board are the only ones who are asking why this is happening but the reporters don't care lol. I want to know, dammit.
Q. Can you give the fans an example of how many looks like actually have?
TS: In the red zone right now, the tight red zone within 7 yards, I’ve seen them play 13 different coverages. To me, that’s too much, doing too many things. But that’s their philosophy. They will show you a lot of looks and a lot of personnel groupings so you have to figure out ways to settle down and make things clearer for your quarterback.
Thirteen different coverages is ridiculous. I agree with Sparano that's too much. I understand you want to confuse the quarterback but I think at that point, you might be confusing your own players.

Reminds me of some of the breakdowns you saw with our defense under Saban. Players start second guessing where they should be covering and become a step or two late.

Haha, yeah. Saban's settled down now though or at least it appears that way when I watch Alabama. A lot of Cover 1 and Cover 3 with a mix of his ILB's dropping down the pipe.
