Dude sang that version of Billie Jean on American Idol tonight. Pretty good Turn the Page: Metallica and the newest cover I have heard and enjoy is Hit the Lights: Black Tide
Fleetwood Mac/Hole - Gold Dust Woman Keith Whitley/Allison Krause - When You Say Nothing At All Lt. Dan already named my absolute favorite cover from Metallica
shinedown - simple man (lynyrd skynyrd) metallica - turn the page and... I'll just throw this out there if you guys want to check out a cool twist on a classic song... paint it black (rolling stones) done by a band called The Tea Party. you can check it out here. its not a music video or anything, just the tea party's version of the song with the lyrics scrolling by and some pictures of the band... i saw them do this version live once too, really cool. if you like the different sound of rock... check out some of their other stuff too, sadly though, one of canada's most talented bands musically... is no longer anyways check it out! love to hear what you think hope you enjoy
Metallica's Turn the Page has already been mentioned but it's one of my favorites. Also, Goo Goo Doll's new version of Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit" is very good.

I like this. The way it started out I thought they weren't going to do anything different with the song, but it turned out well. I like the synth in the middle, nice touch. I'll bow out of this thread now though; as always with all these music threads, it turns into a metal thread. I respect metal and I'm glad it has fans, but I guess no fans of anything but metal ever post in these. Odd, given that metal is a small portion of record sales relative to the whole - even in metal's heyday. If I sound a little pissed, please forgive me. I'll get over it. It's just that a thread about metal has zero appeal to me, and it would be gratifying to see the other 90% weigh in as well to balance it out somewhat.
awesome! glad you liked!! they always did different stuff with their songs. they always mixed eastern and western rock influences together in almost everything they did, especially on their first 3-4 records. every album was something different
I've got to say it. I hate that cover of Simple Man if it is the same band I heard covering it on the radio. Frankly I thought it was one of the worst covers I've ever heard, mainly because of the singer being so totally obsessed with himself and singing it like Maria Carey would.
IMO Brent Smith has one of the best voices out their right now. His voice is, if not, stronger than Chris Cornell, not Cornell of today but the past. Smith sings with passion and you can tell he feels what he sings
I never really got into Cornell. So I guess its just not my style. I don't like a lot of modern rock in part because of the singers. I'm not necessarily saying they are bad singers. I pay the most attention to guitar playing. But if the singer gets on my nerves its going to be hard for me to listen. And listening to this song I got the sense he was being over the top.
Well, no discussin of covers would be complete without mentioning some legendary covers that eclipsed the originals: Blue Suede Shoes, Elvis Presley (orig. Carl Perkins) R-E-S-P-E-C-T, Aretha Franklin (original Otis Redding) All Along the Watchtower, Jimi Hendrix (orig. Bob Dylan) And some of my personal favorite covers: Dead Souls, Nine Inch Nails (orig. Joy Division) Blue Bayou, Linda Ronstadt (orig. Roy Orbison) America, Yes (orig. Simon and Garfunkel)
Ronstadt is one of my favorite singers and a great cover artist. She also did my favorite versions of "Tracks of My Tears", "After the Gold Rush" (Neil Young), and "The Waiting" (Tom Petty) among others.
Knockin on Heavens Door - GnR and then a seperate version by Bob Marley (Original Dylan) Last Kiss - Pearl Jam Mrs Robinson - The lemonheads (Original The Beatles) Planet caravan - pantera (Original Black Sabbath) Rockin in the Free World - pearl Jam and also Bon Jovi (Original Neil Young) Turn The Page - Metallica (Original Lynard Skynard) Dancing Days - STP (Original Led Zepplin) Ghost of Tom Joad - Rage Against The Machine (Original Bruce Springsteen) The Boys of Summer - the Ataris (I think the Original is done by Richard Marx or Bryan Adams) Strawberry Fields Forever - ben Harper (Original The Beatles) High Tide or Low Tide - jack Johnson and Ben Harper (Original Bob Marley) All Along the Watchtower - Dave Matthews band; also love the Jimi Hendrix version just not as much (Original by Bob Dylan)
This is not a necessarily a cover per-se, but David Cook singing with ZZ Top "Sharp Dressed Man" is just awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbXBrILBMtU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HwurUBRnyg Amateur cover of Battery by Metallica. The best sounding covers come from this guy. The tone on his guitar is amazing.
MAN, some good choices on here!! Good thread topic JT! My choices would have to be: Little Wing - Skid Row Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - Led Zeppelin Knockin' on Heaven's Door - G'N'R Simple Man - Shinedown Cold Gin - Skid Row/Pantera Crazy Train - Sebastian Bach/Dimebag Stone Cold Crazy - Metallica Planet Caravan - Pantera War Pigs - Faith No More Just to name a few... This is a favorite selection of music for me! I like to see the artists performing their inspirations.
I've seen All Along the Watchtower mentioned a few times. A band called TSOL covered it in the 80's and did a great job IMO. I also love Queensryche's version of Scarborough Fair.
I think it was Don Henley. Some of my favorites are Holy Diver by Killswitch Engage, In The Air Tonight by Nonpoint, and Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm..
