I took a run around different team sites, etc to see what kind of a meal Tuna could make out of FA. Here's the latest.
Pats will franchise Wilfork but, may consider trading him.
SF will franchise Franklin, and keep him.
Pitt is 50-50 on franchising Hampton.
GB is unlikely to tag Pickett.
Pats will re-sign or tag OLB Banta-Cain.
A Bryant will be a FA but, no one sees us having any interest, same appears true on Rolle.
Dansby will be the best FA available, and wants a lot of money.
IMO, that's it. Everything else is hamburger, not Tuna. helper.
So, in the "Where's The Beef" department, we may have a shot at Hampton, could get Pickett or, keep our "aged beef" in Ferg, who is close to the expiration date.
Dansby is not "Prime" but the closest thing for sale.
We may well end up with a donut for FA dinner. LOL

Dansby is reportedly seeking about $30 million guaranteed. In a discussion in the club the conclusion seemed to be that, after adjusting for today's dollars, he's seeking about 80% of what Ray Lewis signed for. If you think he's 80% of the player that Lewis was in 2001, then he's worth it. IMO he's worth that and I don't think this FO will balk at that. Obviously somebody could over pay, but I still think that Miami should be the odds on favorite to land Dansby.

However, I do agree with you. In the past two years, we have paid a couple of players very good, not great money. This year, there are no other options.
IF we do not get Dansby and maybe a NT, we have to trade picks or count solely on the draft. I am not counting on contract cuts.
Dansby is not worth what he will get. That supply and demand is something we have to deal with. There are no other choices. -
The New York Giants are considered a possible destination for linebacker Karlos Dansby, as reports have surfaced that the Arizona Cardinals will not put the franchise tag on him for the third straight year. If the reports are true, Dansby will become a free agent on March 5th and will be on the Giants' radar.

We have so many holes to fill we MUST pick up at least one solid FA signing, either ILB (Dansby), NT (Wilfork) but I don't know of any others, the pickings sure seem slim!
I think we have no choice but to go all out for Dansby. -
With all of the contract bonuses coming due in March some unexpected players will be cut or traded to avoid paying them.
And I still think Adalious Thomas is on the radar. -
I def think he will be a dark horse in FA
he's outa the Pats...and he would be a def upgrade to what we have
good pass rusher from the ILB spot -
He has been very very disappointing for NE since they signed him.
Another I would add to the possibility list is Chris Gocong.
He would be a nice fit at a seriously reduced price of Dansby.... -
I do feel A Thomas will have a chip on his shoulder over the way the Patriots do things and two games a year against them will be attractive. -
I've looked up and down the FA list a number of times, and there is just nothing there. Hell, after Dansby, the best LB I could see is Indy's Gary Brackett, he's 29, 5'11" and 235, and Indy is working on re-signing him. -
And I disagree, I see a couple of players who can improve the Dolphins from day 1 available in Free Agency.
The problem is soo many phinfans are focused on "we need an ILB" that they overlook the issues at both outside linebacker slots and at NT and at Safety and on Special Teams. -
FS and ILB are close. Based on late season play, I give Wilson the edge over Ayodele, although I would trade Bell and move Wilson over IF we could find an upgrade.
I disagree on ST's, other than a return guy. Bess is average, and Ginn is up and mostly down. Cobbs seems to have the potential but, has not shown it. -
Seriously, anyone who does not think we could use a A Thomas or Vrabel or even Bantu Cain is not living in the "right now", we basically have no starting OLB's at the moment.
Eh, i'm mixed on Wilson, a part of me wonders if it was the scheme, a different part wonders if it was Wilson merely stealing money from the Dolphins, I'd like to see Clemons play more either way.
A player like Sean Jones would/should come fairly cheaply if we cut Wilson but want Veteran Depth at Safety.
What I'm thinking of is the need for a leader, a ST ace, we don't have anyone like that and imho i'd take a run at Kaasim Osgood or David Tyree for that role. -

There just is not much there MM..Matt Wilhelm could not buy a job in the NFL last yr, Antonio Pierce maybe, maybe not, fits what we do.
TBH, we either stick with what we have, or hope a Vet is cut, or draft someone because the pickings just are not there this year at ILB that is unless Ireland has his eyes on someone we simply could never know about, for example maybe Derrick Johnson is available cheaply?
I will say the teams we played in 09 offer the best chance to see some guys signed, that is what happened in the 09 offseason, we played the Raiders in 08 and signed Jake Grove for example. -
however
disagree about all the holes we have to fill to compete
needs: ILB, NT, WR, maybe a FreeSafety & TE
could develop our FreeSafety & TE in-house
which would leave three positions to fill: ILB, NT & WR
not so bad  think about it
we will contend in 2010dolfan7171 likes this. -
Like Nate Ness who is on the practice squad, he runs 4.3 40's works cheaper and played a bit in 09, if Allen does not show increased competence and becomes a threat to be at least the nickel Cb, why keep him around if Ness is ready to take his spot?
I think we will see that implemented this offseason the same as it was in 08. -
jason taylor will stick & start w/ cameron wake,
back-up & rotation: moses, anderson & walden
front office would never unload taylor & porter
the same season, simply not going to happen
we're set @ OLB, it's the middle that has to be fixed -
not to worry  don't understand the pessimism that persists
they are starters  we need an ILB & NT, possibly a FreeSafety
not much to complete the defense & we're ready to contend  -
I would look into Kassim Osgood.
The guy is an all-pro special teamer, he does not play much at WR but the Chargers have some darn good WR's in front of him.
The guy is a huge target which we could use.
I would look hard at this guy if we can get him at a reasonable price.
And I would draft Defense all day.padre31 likes this. -
And tbh, a part of installing a Culture of Winning is locking down the details, ST improved 20 slots "but" imho the message should be sent that even that much of an improvement is simply not good enough, the "best" ST unit in the AFCE should be the goal.
And..the SparanoPhins have not recovered an onside kick in 2yrs... -
I think we'll do what we've been doing and double up on draft picks by drafting 2 OLBs.
So IMO we would go into the season with JT and rookies at OLB and Crowder and Foote/Dansby at ILB. With Wake continuing to work on improving his pass coverage and run stopping. -
-
#1 in ST tackles was Nate Jones, #2 was JA, however Lexxy had 13, 3 less than Allen and he stopped playing ST maybe in week 10 or so.
What JA did do well was play Cb, when Vontae D went out in the Pats game JA was targeted by Brady and he stripped the ball from Moss on a surefire TD. -
-
Justin Bannan who a few people have brought up would be a good pickup. Held down the fort very well for Baltimore last year while Gregg was hurt. He also had a better year according to profootballfocus.com than Pickett and Hampton and would cost less to sign I think.
Derrick Johnson from KC is a guy who had a good year last year. Need to watch out for what kind of tag KC puts on him since he is a RFA.
This year like they have been saying is going to probably end up being very trade heavy. We do have some interesting pieces that may attract teams so we will see. I just dont see us giving up any picks this offseason though. -

The goodies are going to have to be from the draft. The FA cupboard is either bare or pretty expensive. I could see the FO going for mid ranked FA's like Tully Banta-Cain. I'm not sure I see them paying Dansby type cash though I would welcome it in this case.
I expect them to do with they did with Cam Wake. Find value at a position of need without laying lots of cash out. The FO has laid out cash rarely for big time FO's and when they have the results have been mixed. -

I'm fairly certain I saw Lex covering kickoffs later than week 10.
