having seen the PS3 demo in motion, if there's a difference it's going to be VERY minuscule. It looks fantastic. I'm sure gametrailers will do one of those comparison videos that people will nit pick. Looks identical (obviously i didnt see em side to side) to me.
Terra is a rename. Her original name was Tina. Atmospheric names didn't appear until Nomura got his hands on the franchise.
Final Fantasy VII. Thus, Cloud. Nomura returned for FF8, thus Squall. Nomura had nothing to do with IX, but came back for X, thus Tidus. XI was an MMO, nothing to do with Nomura; likewise, FF12 didn't involve Nomura at all. Nomura returns for FF13, and voila, Lightning and Snow. Note that just like how tides don't come from clouds, Tidus is pretty different from the Cloud/Squall/Lightning/Snow family. And yeah, like mor said, Tina/Terra is from FF6. But Terra is a Ted Woolsey US-only rename, her original name was Tina. Doesn't really apply.
I wonder how many discs FFXIII will be on for the 360. I was surprised to see Mass Effect 2 was on two discs. Are we getting to the point now where we're going to see a ton of 360 games on two discs [or more] because of DVD space issues? Will it just be RPGs, I really don't know. I'm interested in this game for sure but it could be a while before I pick it up. The Show, Heavy Rain, Red Dead Redemption, and God of War III are all higher on my list at the moment. When I do get it I think I'll go with PS3 so I hopefully won't have discs to change.
what? this isnt a PS3 exclusive...at least for launch??? weak. and explains much. i'll probably get it for the PS3. I prefer to get the games for the system they build it on. The ports don't always pan out well. But for this title, its probably solid. Bayonetta, for example is supposed to have a horrible PS3 port.
PS3-only in Japan, ported to the 360 for us foreigners. I wouldn't count on the 360 port being perfect. I think it's pretty telling that Square-Enix hasn't shown the PS3 version and the 360 version side by side. I'm sure the 360 port will be very good, but I'd rather go with the PS3 version just to be safe. Three DVDs, confirmed a couple of weeks ago.
I dunno... Looks pretty damn perfect to me. Again... Saw the Japanese demo played through in it's entirety more than once and I cant see any difference. Again, not side by side.
Thus my qualm. At every public event where S-E has shown off the 360 version of FF13, they've segregated it from the PS3 version. They had an event a few weeks ago where the two consoles were spaced apart from each other and the view of the other restricted by a black curtain. They are intentionally not allowing a side-by-side comparison.
I think just having one disc is worth going PS3, even if there are no other differences. I would feel strange playing it on Xbox anyway. It's good for people that don't have PS3 though. Sucks for Sony.
So what are The Mor's overall thoughts? Cliffs? If I've only played ONE Final Fantasy game every, which I have no idea which one it was and remember as much as a character's name from it, will I be completely lost? Game looks nice, do want. Questionable, though, how much I would like it seeing how aside from shooters, I really only enjoy open world games.
Final Fantasy games aren't direct sequels. You can play FF4 and it has no relation to what you experience in FF11. They're all independent. (The exception being the very few direct sequels out there: FF4 After Years is a sequel to FF4, and Revenant Wings is a direct sequel to FF12.) FF13 is a JRPG, which means linearity. If you want an open world, this won't provide.
I pre-ordered my PS3 copy & can't wait to play it next week. It's been a long time since I have played a FF series game on a console: FFVII.
im not going to lie, whether or not i can get achievements will decide which version i get. Any insight there?
I dunno man... I'm not totally sold on this yet. It starts off ridiculously slow. Couldn't play last night (that damn woman again) but I should get some serious gamage in tonight. I'll try to have a fair yay or nay by tomorrow morning. Well they both have the trophy or achievement systems... for some reason that little sound you get when you get an achievement on 360 seems to still be more important to me than that trophy notification. I dunno why. I guess it's because I've been putting together my 360 achievements since the consoles birth... The PS3 list is missing a bunch of stuff because when it launched they called the feature dumb.
oh i know. i dont care for trophies at all, but im an achievement whore. what i meant was, are the achievements obtainable? Are they based on progressing through the story?
There are some story-related trophies/achievements, but most originate from battle-related accomplishments. Equipping every weapon/accessory once, maxing out all your characters, dealing over 100,000 damage in one attack, mastering each of the Paradigm Shift roles, things like that. Basically, to get all of the trophies/achievements, you're going to grind in the battle system for many, many hours. Just casually playing through the story will net you about... oh, 40% of the total list.
so far i think i've gotten 2 or 3. I didnt go through the list as I usually do that after I beat a game (dont ask why). I'll screen shot the list when i get home if you remind me to
Havent played this series since the first playstation version (7?) one question...do you still have summons like that one ??
Yes, and If I remember right each person gets one summon because it is special to them. (Part of the story). Also they have what is called gestalt or vehicle mode like Shiva turns into an a motorcycle.
This is correct. One character gets one associated summon. In this game, they're called Eidolons, as that seems to be the preferred title over the last few years. Lightning gets Odin, Snow has the Shiva sisters (yes, there are two of them now), and so on and so forth. And yes, they transform into vehicles; the Shiva sisters combine into a motorcycle, Sazh's Eidolon becomes a Caddy with rear-mounted guns (you think I'm joking...), Lightning mounts Odin's horse, etc. Tetsuya Nomura is on crack. And it makes for pretty interesting visuals.
Alexander makes a return in the form of a playable summon as the Eidolon of Hope Estheim. In this game, Alexander takes on a far more human appearance than in other games, possessing visible hands for the first time. He uses his powerful fists to strike enemies, but is also capable of long range attacks. Hope, Lightning, and Fang will first face him as a boss, as a test to prove Hope's strength to him. In his Gestalt Mode, Alexander becomes a fortress surrounding the battlefield while Hope stays on him, giving him orders. He fires beams of holy light from his cannons. According to Motomu Toriyama, Alexander is a "tactical commander."
Ahh, I see now. They've redesigned Alexander so that his normal appearance (that is, the way he appeared in other Final Fantasy games) is the Gestalt mode. Explains a lot. Good find.
http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Eidolon_(Final_Fantasy_XIII)#Gestalt_Mode_by_Eidolon That page has all of them.
I don't think they are any real spoilers there. It's just a page about Eidolons, and gestalt mode. It also lists them in order of appearance. So if you didn't want to know about future characters and who their summon is then yea. But to each their own desides.
Yes, I consider that spoiler material. Not all spoilers are on the level of "Aerith dies at the end of the first disc."
cool cool. if you could that'd be great. it might be up in the interweb actually, i should just look. here it is http://www.ps3trophies.org/game/final-fantasy-xiii/trophies/ a lot of them seem doable.
Re: PS3 vs 360 graphics I have heard FFXIII referred to as the "reverse Ghostbusters" because the graphics are that noticeably different.
