Here is the first depth chart.....not really too surprising looks like Dallas Thomas is still the RG is the biggest news http://www.miamidolphins.com/news/a...4-Season/4ea72e40-1c99-47fd-8039-d6e06454a6b0
It seems odd to me at least. I don't know much about the guy, and haven't paid much attention to training camp so far, but from what I read when we signed him this guy was supposed to walk right in here and be a solid starter. At least that's the impression I got.
Smith has apparently looked poor thus far, but from what I gather, none of the guys fighting for the RG spot have set the world on fire. On the other hand, we're likely much, much deeper at the spot than we were last season as well.
No surprises, except for Mitchell, he is the every down tackle? That's a surprise. Dallas Thomas is a bit of a surprise, but considering the state of the line, I would not call it that.
I feel bad for Shelley Smith. CK made a great point in a different thread. Smith really got screwed by this coaching staff. He was given 4 practices at C and while he was trying a new position he'd never played and wasn't signed to play, he lost out on a position to a player in Philbin's "good 'ole boy club". If I'm Shelley Smith, I'm not a happy camper being a team player and not having the chance to compete for a starting spot.
I think it's pretty early to assume Smith chances are done. In no way do I think Dallas Thomas has RG completely locked down.
I know Smith has been getting some reps at RG, but it seems as though they've pigeon-holed the RG spot to a 2-man race now with Thomas & Turner. I hope you're right though. You think it'd make sense to balance out James' inexperience with a little experience. The sound of Thomas/James or Turner/James is scary, especially with Satele or Brenner in the middle until Pouncey is back...if he's back.
The ole Jason Trunsik at back up mike, the ole man the ole river. Jesus. Jimmy Wilson must be playing lights out football to keep that nickel spot..I guess if either starting corner gets hurt it's Jamar getting the p,ay while Jimmy continues with his nickel role..I thought Jimmy would turn into a solid type player but this guy has got some extra juice in the tank. I think we finally have some players to get excited about in the 2nd half, Fede, McCain, Aikens, Johnson, Williams, Binns, Turner.
Opening Day I expect he will be at RG It has been a fairly predictable camp so far, the starters are how they are, if only RG is up for grabs we are not in too bad of shape I thought many of the OL's problems last yr began b/c they had a poor grasp of their assignments, if that is improved the line play will improve greatly
I'm betting they've got Mitchell listed as a 1-technique and Starks and Odrick at 3-technique. Starks can play both as well, but they listed Jared Odrick as a "co-starter" because they rotate the three.
Lots of interesting FA decisions after this year: Odrick, Wilson, Delmas, plus you have decisions to make on guys like Tannehill, Wallace, Ellerbe in terms of extending or axing them.
Scrappy bastard who is seemingly improving his knack for being around the ball.. We knew he would make the team comin out of Montana..but he's becoming one hell of a 7 th round pick..hell, just one hell of a football player. Been sayin it, I liked the finnegan signing, I loved his confidence during the offseason, I loved Jamar Taylor to rebound and elevate, they both are on the track I thought, and now with will Davis getting better, then Jimmy, were really gonna be tough on the back end. I seriously don't know how were gonna get them enough reps.
CK brought up the point earlier that Shelley Smith has been practicing at LG. Could very well be they are seeing if he can handle it enough to cut out Daryn. I wouldn't count out Dallas at RG though. He's consistently been slotted as a starter most of the time. If he holds up in the preseason games he might just have it.
Joe has a "good 'ole boy club"? First I heard of it. Who are all the players in this "good 'ole boy club"?
Not that high, but in their 3 key categories for slot corner, he was 7th, 10th and 14th out of 28 who played in 50% of their team's snaps. Not too shabby.
If it's close you go with the younger guy who you have signed longer. Especially if you want to kick up the run game because he's probably your best run blocker by far. Plus they can save $1.75 million cutting him as they only guaranteed $250k as opposed to the $1.25 million guaranteed to Smith. People are talking about cutting Garner cause of his cost (which I'm not buying)....be worse to have Smith as a backup at that salary. Edit: @chrisperk 15m LG is Shelley Smith...LT Albert, C Satele, RG Thomas, RT James. For now. Always qualifier w/this OL. Speak of the devil. Only the tackles are safe in Miami.
I don't think it's different from any coach. I meant it as a slight, yes, but not as a total negative. It sounds like Colledge is holding up well. What I meant? Philbin has a history of bringing in guys he's familiar with, from a coaching standpoint - Sherman, Sherman's SIL, Taylor, Sherman's BIL, Turner, etc. From a player's standpoint? Steinbach (did I spell that correctly??) a few years ago, Colledge this year. Guy's he has some familiarity with. Again, it's not different from any other coach bringing their person in. It was simply a description of Philbin pulling into his "rolodex" of familiar names when there is some uneasiness at a position.
Who doesn't? When it comes to players though Philbin has gone after previous players a lot less then I expected from our past coaches.
So basically we have several players who haven't looked very good so far and that somehow creates depth at the position. I don't care how many players you have competing for a position. If none of them are capable of getting the job done, does it really matter how deep the position is? Perhaps one of them will step up and become a solid starter, but right now it seems like none of them are any better than Jerry at the RG position and he was certainly not very good.
