GRADE: 6.40
Body Structure: Maybin has a lean, angular frame, but shows good upper- and lower-body muscle definition. He is most comfortable playing at 235-240 pounds, but has added bulk since the end of the 2008 season and feels that he has the frame that can carry additional bulk (will basically build to suit, depending if he is asked to play linebacker or rush end). He has a good bubble, quadriceps and calves, long arms, broad shoulders and tight waist.
Athletic Ability: Maybin comes off the snap with good explosion. He has the athletic burst from the edge to surprise slower blockers and shows a fluid stride closing in the backfield. He runs with good body lean. Has a light frame for a defensive end, but can carry additional bulk. He does not show the hip snap you look for in a linebacker and could struggle getting good depth in his pass drops. If moved to a stand-up position, he has just marginal lateral agility working down the line, relying more on his straight-line burst to angle to the quarterback. Still, for a defensive end, he shows quickness, good foot speed, fine balance, but only marginal change-of-direction skills. He generates a good push off the line on the pass rush. He is a swift-moving player into the backfield, but not as good when working his way down the line. GRADE: 7.5
Football Sense: Maybin lacks experience, technique and displays just adequate awareness. He gets a bit reckless in his play and struggles quite a bit to recognize and then split double teams. He sifts out the ball at the line of scrimmage, but lacks awareness in pass coverage. He is slow to react to the thrown ball and while he can retain plays, he needs more than a few reps to do so. He just gets by as a student. GRADEL 5.5
Character: Maybin is liked by teammates and has been involved in community activity. He has no known off-field issues, but created quite a media buzz at the Rose Bowl practices, as he was banned by the coaching staff from taking part in media day. He also was made to practice with the second team for disciplinary reasons. GRADE-6.2
Competitiveness: Maybin shows good toughness, but needs to play with more consistency and aggressiveness. He struggles to shed, lacks discipline on the field and at this stage of his game, his best value is just as a pass rusher. Even so, he lacks an array of moves, outside of his initial burst. He has great energy when roaming the field, but has to show better effort stepping up to take on the block. He needs to add more bulk and strength to combat the offensive tackles. He might show hustle coming off the edge and good aggression, but is too slow to react in passing situations. GRADE: 6.3
Work Habits: Maybin is respected by teammates and the staff calls him coachable. He works hard in the training room, but might not have the frame to bulk up considerably to play defensive end. He is a one-dimensional player who does not show the field smarts needed to be efficient in pass coverage as an outside linebacker. He is very determined to get to the quarterback and he shows great desire in pursuit. GRADE: 6.5
