No worse than the "Bench Press & Curls Only" guys.... I swear I've seen so many guys with huge arms but chicken legs. I also find the guys who take the 50lb dumbells out and do like... half curls. You know, the ones that who care nothing about technique and only try to impress people. Yessir, they do their curls but they arch their back to help them put up the weight. And then they have two guys "spot" them on the bench... which is actually the two guys and the lifter struggling to put up the bar with a couple 45lb plates on it. And then there's the guys who drop the bar/dumbbells so it slams on the ground... then they stand up very proud of themselves. I normally want to yell out "Idiot!" but I refrain from doing so....

I've also been known to let the boys breath freely when benching, though I'm not ashamed or hiding from that one! :tongue2:

Doesnt make it ok....And its actually a real problem if you drive to and from the gym and have to drive ten-fifteen minutes after running 10-12 miles

For the record CLA is a fat loss supplement, but maybe because its a natural supplement found in meats and cheeses Ive never experienced those side effects in the four years ive been taking it....

My whole thing is balancing my diet. I binge too much, and it throws my body off hardcore. Since Nov. I have taken off 60lbs, and gained noticeable muscle mass. I workout 4-5 times a week mixing cardio with weights. I have hit a major, MAJOR plateau though. I haven't been able to break it yet.

Im pretty sure I can break that plateau for you, just need some info....

whats your routine? Meaning, when you workout do you do your first set of bench or curls or whatever do you start with your maximum weight (that you can do 5-6 reps with)? Or do you start with a weight you can do 10 or 12 reps with and then gradually move the weight up?

How long do you take in between sets?

How many reps do you try and get per set?

Im pretty sure I can fix a plateau seeing as how I know that word very well.

I generally warm up for 5 minutes on a treadmill to get my heart rate up. Then depending on the day I work on upper, or lower body with weights. Upper body: Since I dont have anyone to work out with I tend to not be able to max so on the bench right now I lift 140, 3 sets. 12,10, and 8.I try not to take more then a minute between sets. the from there I do cross cables, same thing 3 sets 12,10,8, weight, each arm=30,40,50. Then I do curls, generally using free weight, same reps as benching. usually 25lbs each arm. Legs I do sitting leg lifts, which the sets I keep the same just adjusting the weight, usually I max out at 250. and leg curls same thing. Then after I do that I spend atleast a half an hr doing cardio, usually the stair master, which I have found seems to challenge me alot more than the treadmill, plus all the hot chicks use them more.

LOL, I never said it was okay. Of course its not, I'm just saying you shouldn't be surprised by it.

And yes CLA is much more natural than the Hydroxycut, Xenadrine, Ephedra,etc.. type stuff I was referring too.

Just as I suspected. Many people, including myself have plateaued trying to go up in weight on the 2nd and 3rd set. Try doing this backwards. Go with your heaviest weight for the first and second set, and your 2nd heaviest weight for your third set. Dont aim for a number, just do as many reps as you can do. If you cant do five or six reps its too much weight. If you can do ten reps with a weight, its time to move up. Using those ideas I moved my bench up from 185 to 275 in less then a year my Sophmore year in college and I had always struggled with bench press. Do it this way with all your exercise though because by doing more reps with a heavier weight youre going to tire out your muscles faster. By the time you get to that third set what usually feels pretty easy is going to feel like a brick but its going to help you break a stale routine and move up in weight.

I can understand not going heavy on the bench without a spotter, that makes sense. If you need a spot just ask one of the people who work there (its part of their job) or if you cant find an employee, take no shame in asking someone who is taking a breather in between sets. That last rep or two are the ones that build the most muscle from the lactic acid your body releases on the first eight or nine reps. :wink2:

If this doesnt work I have some other suggestions as well. :hi5:

I really thought most people started at their heaviest and worked their way down. I guess thats just how I learned to lift. I'll switch it up every now and again and go lightest to heaviest.

Another thing to vary it up:

You can do negatives on benching (lower the weight down at a slow pace to your chest then go up, but try to concentrate more on the decline) or with curls or whatever your doing. If your gonna do that on benching though, Id recommend having a spotter.

Also, when your benching try to do your last set with varying grips. Say if your going for 12 reps, do 4 with your hands close in, then rack it and move your hands out to their normal spot and do 4, then rack it and move your hands out wide for 4 more. Thatll hit your from a few new spots.

Commitment and consistency are the most important thing. The people that workout for a few weeks then take a few off really dont get anywhere.

I was just reading a really good article the other day about how much of a difference different angles and grips make when benching. I will probably never be satisfied with my chest so I'm always looking at new bench and just overall chest exercises. I always switch up the order/sets/reps in my workouts to keep things fresh.

If you really want to hit your chest from different angles I suggest doing pushups as a workout instead of benching once in awhile, or doing flys with dumbbells. You could even do a workout rotating through all 3 exercises.

Personally, I used to only do pushups to workout my chest (sets of 20 at varying hand positions) for about a year and a half because of a shoulder injury I had. I couldnt bench without a lot of pain the next day so I just stuck with pushups.

I really credit a lot of the strength that I have in my chest now to pushups. I dont do them all that much anymore but they definitely built me a great base to work from.

For lifting close to your max or until failure, yes a spotter is def needed.

But I think the key is finding motivation for yourself to keep going with it. Dont rely on anyone to help push you but yourself and I think you'll be better off.

Definitely. However, I find most people benefit from the extra motivation and support, both short and long term. :hi5: You don't need to have one, but I feel the added benefits outweigh the negative possibilities of using your partner as a motivational crutch. It's like I tell everyone I've ever trained/trained with- you need to do it for YOU. Sometimes it just helps to have someone there to remind you.

i feel motivated by this thread, so i am going to try something here; the unofficial TheFins.com Lounge thread combination workout routine.

stay with me here... i noticed a few spots below this thread there is one entitled; "Sex takes 3 to 13 minutes, study says."

so why not combine the two and see if i can have sex 3 or 4 times a day for 13 minutes and see if that helps me get in better shape.

i wonder what the odds are that my wife will agree to that workout regimen?

i also wonder what the odds are of me going 13 minutes once a day, let alone 4 times. :)

I don't think I would ever resort to just doing pushups for chest workout. I know they help and the old saying "More is not always better" sometimes applies but I would never be satisfied just doing pushups as a full chest workout.

Not sure how many exercises you do for each body section but 3 is usually my minimum. I just did my chest workout on Tuesday and did Flyes/Incline Dumbbells/Flat Bench/Pullovers. I try not to do too much to avoid overtraining though.

doing them every once in awhile will def kill your chest. when i do a chest workout of them i do about 9 sets of 20 at different hand positions and i'll def feel it the next day. even just doing a short set after benching will put a hurtin on your chest.

I do add them into my routine once in awhile to shake things up. I like to do incline pushups with my feet on the bench. I'm not saying they don't work, I'm just saying I don't think I could ONLY do them and nothing else. Mind over matter type thing I guess.

Actually I cant even say how many people I see starting with low weights and trying to move up. I guess it seems logical until you actually think about it :)

And yeah, negatives are a great way to improve but its best to do that at near max weight with a spot. That'll make you sore as all heck but it works :pointlol:

I see Im not the only one obsessive about chest work but I do it a little differently. I like to break it down more and do incline work and pair it with arms, decline work and pair it with back, and flat bench on days I do legs. Works phenomenally well from my experience. :hi5:

I agree that less then 3-4 different section is a pretty ineffective way to work. Not really getting enough repetitions or hitting all the muscles within the one section by limiting yourself to less then that.

I guess those people arent factoring in that your getting more tired with every rep. So itd make more sense to start heavy and somewhat exhaust your muscles, then work your way down. Its safer to end with lower weights too if you don't have a spotter, easier to gage how much fatigue is setting in.

For bench I think it depends how many reps your doing in each set and if your varying your grip at all. I've found quite a bit of success like that. About a year ago I was maxing out at around 260 and now I'm up to 320. Overall, my chest is probably the most defined and developed section on me. But like I said before, I think doing pushups for so long when I was younger was an unorthodox way of beefing myself up for the future. Whatever works right? lol
