I've been watching the game for over 16 years now, and I consider myself to be very knowledgeable about the game of football. However, there is one thing I've noticed that I never understood and was hoping someone could shine a light on it for me.

Have you ever noticed when the receiver comes and sets himself at the line of scrimmage, he'll turn his head to the sidelines and point? I don't understand why. At first I just thought it was just something for the coach, but I've noticed them doing it towards the other teams sideline or even down towards the goal line where there are no coaches standing. I don't get it and it's been bothering me for a while.

    Anyone got an idea?

He's looking at the ref and confirming that he's on the line.

Doesn't DL do this to? They ask the line judge to see if they are off-sides or not?
