This is the "slippery slope" we are about to enter into. IF players win in the courts, the NFL will be 32 individual businesses.
This would mean teams could spend whatever they want to whoever they want. There would be no salary cap, or no splitting revenue.
Each team would be completely on their own, which is American business throughout the country. The NFL would now join the game.
Small market teams would suffer. Parity should suffer. It would be just like baseball.
Is that a good or bad thing?

I know how you feel. I've really just started focusing on the Braves and the upcoming baseball season. As long as no games are missed I think I'll be able to jump back into the NFL later in the year with no problems. I'd hate to see no salary cap but I don't think it will hurt Miami's chances of competing. Football doesn't have a farm system and no cap will hurt parity more in the NFL than it does for MLB.

All NFL team get $125M from TV. Imagine if TV had to pay the individual teams. What would Carolina, TB, Tenn, etc be worth with no national following?
Then look at the Giants, Jets, Pats, Wash, and Dallas, and what they could spend if they did not have to share revenue, and were not limited in what they could spend. -
HELL YEAH! I'd take a couple of Super Bowl wins in between re-building.
Problem is, if the draft is no longer there, NFL re-building is no where near the same as baseball. -
It would be a complete disaster and would be the owners nightmare. They would see their payrolls skyrocket. Some kind of agreement will be accepted by the owners before this happens.

But even baseball has a draft, and 6 years until free agency. 4 years of club control (can pay anywhere from league minimum to a long term contract if the teams wants to sign them early), and last 2 years are arbitration eligible. So its not COMPLETE free agency. If that happens, in 5 -10 years half of the teams will go bankrupt and the league will shrink.

I think payroll would crush a number of franchises, especially if the 18 game schedule and expanded rosters go live. NFL rosters are much larger than in MLB.
I wonder if a move to that style of player management would bring guaranteed contracts though. -

Where did you hear that this would be the case? The players are trying to force the NFL to pay their contracted salaries. Not saying you're wrong, i just don't see how that affects the Supreme Court ruling that the NFL is already 32 competing companies rather than a single entity.

Honestly if it were to happen (doubtful IMO), it likely would help the Dolphins.
We have one of the richest owners. Plus the way to actually make money in a town like Miami is to win, or in the least lose with interest.
It is a bandwagon city. -

There are things happening now, the court battle to end the lockout, and Congress getting involved in the anti-trust exemption on TV revenue, which the Supreme Court did not address.
The players are also set to go to court on the legality of the draft, which is why Von Miller was added to their team, and the legality of the TV exemption, which Congress has already started.
This info comes from legal analyst and lawyers who were interviewed by assorted ESPN shows, as well as local sports news.
Again, I do not believe it will come to this but the door has been opened by starting the court battles. -
I'm not so sure it would automatically help the Dolphins, at least not right away. Both the Jets and Pats are currently better than we are and would have the same amount of resources to spend in order to keep it that way (Buffalo would be crushed, however).
Needless to say, it would be awful for the league as a whole, punishing the fans in Indy, Pittsburgh, and GB-- teams that have succeeded under the current system and would pretty much be also-rans if they had to compete against the money in the big markets. -
Here is my 2 cents worth on the issue: Pro athletes are greatly overpaid, but if you look at pro athletes they make up a very small part of the overall population. There are around 1600 guys in the NFL (32 teams x 50 players), and about 750 in MLB, and 400 in the NBA and I am guessing maybe 700 in the NHL? So you have about 3500 guys who are pro athletes in the top four sports. Baseball probably has the highest overall salaries because they have the strongest union. Their salaries are also guaranteed. In the NBA you have knuckleheads making $10 million a season who don't average 10 points a game. The NBA needs to contract and get rid of some teams that just plain stink.
The highest paid NFL players make what the lowest NBA/MLB players make, with the exception of guys like P. Manning, Brady and maybe ten other guys. NFL players make very little money given how popular the NFL has become. It is the owners raking in the cash. I am all for guys making as much as they can being we live in a free market capitalistic society. But I think that the system the way it is gives most teams a shot at winning their division and making the playoffs pretty regularly. You don't have too many teams that are at the bottom of the NFL every year.....even the Lions, Bills, Browns and Cardinals have their decent seasons.
I think the NFL needs a salary cap for rookies, and if free agency becomes more open there still has to be a salary cap so rich owners cannot outspend the "poorer" ones. I don't think any owner is losing money or is close to being poor. I think the players deserve a little bump in pay and maybe they could create a formula to guarantee players a portion of their contract. The players, owners, agents and Commish should be able to sit down and work something out so everyone wins....the fans are the ones who are getting worked over. I think the NFL should give every season ticket holder some free tickets, free beer and food, or a refund for 2011 and 2012 for "emotional distress." I also think getting a lap dance from the cheerleaders would not be asking for too much. -
I agree. I used to listen to Sirius NFL radio in my car every day offseason, or in season, now, I dont turn it on. I dont care to listen to the updates about the *****ing and crying over who gets what in 9 billion dollars. NFL network is the same way, I just dont care to turn it on. I'm irritated by the whole situation. This whole situation is just ridiculous.

The Jets would spend money like nobody's business, but Kraft is a cheapskate. Would be interesting to see if he would try and compete with the wads of Cash that Ross/Johnson would undoubtedly plunk down.
