Omar Kelly tweeted that Vontae Davis is ranked BEHIND Benny Sapp for CB's in the entire league. How the hell is that even possible?? VD went on like a 3 game stretch where he wasn't even targeted...and has only given up ONE big play all season. How do they come up with these numbers and rankings? I know a lot of people love PFF's work so hopefully they can explain, because there's no way you can rank Sapp ahead of Davis. There's just no way.
In good PFF news, Kelly also tweets that Chad Henne is the 11th ranked quarterback.

Well RR, keep in mind Davis is matched up on the opponents best Wr so there will be leakage, the proper metric, for us is explosive plays surrendered, giving yds and completions is not a real concern, it is long plays that lead to fast scores for the opponent.
PFF may crunch the numbers, however they do not know the design of the defense. -

We have the number 1 ranked Offense on PFF. It's not always about production. It's all about the metric they use. Obviously Davis is the better corner overall but based on Sapp's nickel/slot responsibilities, he's doing what he's supposed to do more often. In zone coverage especially, a play near you is not necessarily your fault.

This is how they come up with their grades: http://www.profootballfocus.com/about/grading/

Maybe, just maybe, Sapp is having a better season than people who watch on television can see. That there are some people who dislike him just because he was traded for their favorite player who is well under the 100 catches with Brett Farve that people predicted.
Or it could be that fans have huge unrealistic expectations of players and are angry every time a corner gets a catch on them.unluckyluciano likes this. -

Listen to VD come up and make the hit on D.McFadden. Vontae delivers, celebrates and gives the uh oh. Wind knocked out. Eating grass.
That's a good young CB folks.
It would be interesting where PFF puts Walter McFadden..... Guy got toasted all day. -
personally i find pff's rankings a joke. i take their opinions about as seriously as i do some random fanspost on the miami herald. and its not about this story but rather every position they rank. either their system or their analysis of plays is off

To further explain PFF's rankings, Sapp is at #36 with a 1.2 overall grade. He has a 0.5 in coverage, a 0.2 vs the run, -0.1 on penalties, and 0.6 on a pass rush.
Davis is #40 with an overall grade of 0.6. He has a -2.0 in coverage, 1.3 vs the run, -1.8 on penalties, and -0,5 on a pass rush.
NFL rankings agree that Sapp is rated higher. Now, when you filter out all the CB's not playing 75% of the teams snaps, Davis is at #19.
Sean Smith is at #17 with a 4.9 overall grade. He is 2.6 in coverage, 0.2 vs the run, 1.5 with no penalties, and 0,6 on a pass rush. NFL rankings have him much higher, #2 or #3 I believe.
PFF grade the overall performance of a player but, also does break it down, as you can see. This does not change Sapp vs Davis. In other cases, a CB may do well against the run and rushing the QB, without being all that good in coverage. To me, this is somewhat misleading because I think coverage should have a much higher input on a CB.miamiron likes this. -
PFF's rankings are cumulative so if a player gets a really high or poor score in one game it can really impact rankings. I think PFF does a better job of counting plays where there were missed tackles or passes were completed on a CB. Those things are less subjective.
As for VD he has struggled quite a bit lately. He may have only been beaten on one "big play" (depending on your definition of "big play"), but he has been beaten quite a bit on smaller plays the last few weeks. And his usually very good run support has been missing as well. I don't agree that VD has "clearly" been better at his job than Sapp has been at his this season. VD is certainly the better talent, but he's going through a rough patch.NJFINSFAN1 likes this. -

Yep, no way around it, Davis has struggled after the first few games.

I sincerely believe that the light is gonna go on for both Smith and Davis, and they will both be very special. -

Aren't Smith's numbers misleading since he plays safety in a lot of formations now? I'm not really sure how these grades work.
