Thanks CJ, Two TONS of potential talent out there, depending on who is a FA with a new CBA. We will have a whole lot of money to spend, with Ronnie, Ricky, Penny, J Allen, and others coming off the books. Ireland has his work cut out for him.

Because of the CBA, guys that would've been un-restricted last year had to wait until this year. I know guys like Vincent Jackson and Ronnie Brown were affected by this, as I'm sure others were as well.

If Ross wants playmakers and excitement to open this offense up, we better look at Jacoby Jones hard. He is what Ginn was suppose to be for us, giving us a legit returner and speed at WR.

Their top 2 WRs, their wild cat guy, and 4 key members of their defense. It will be interesting to see who they are able to retain. -
-
WR, James Jones
RB, Darren Sproles
G, Logan Mankins
CB, Fabian Washington
Wouldn't mind another receiver like Breaston or Mikes Sims-Walker if we plan on not taking a WR in the draft. Lets get that wide open, spread type offense for Henne. Let's get him an actual supporting cast. Possibly a Vincent Jackson or Sidney Rice...but I have questions with bringing those two in. -
-
I see a fair amount of Packer's games and James Jones drops a lot of balls, I would pass imo.
-
Trust me, I don't want this guy seeing the field on defense too much, but I still think he could be a solid contributor to STs and be an upgrade over at least Nate Ness and probably Benny Sapp.
-
Yeah, good luck in getting any quality names to come here.
-
If you are a free agents in the NFL? Why would you opt to come to the Dolphins, unless they just offer you so much more money than anyone else. If you are looking at coming to a well run organization that is a playoff contender. You are not looking at signing with the Dolphins. The Dolphins play in the toughest division in football and they are well behind both the Patriots and Jets in talent. The head coach and the GM will most likely be gone after next season. The Dolphins are seen more around the league as being in a class with the Lions, Browns, Redskins and other organizations which have done nothing in the league for over a decade. With all the uncertainty surrouding the Dolphins. I find it highly unlikely that any of the top name free agents would have any interest in playing for the Dolphins next season. I think the Dolphins would have had a much better chance of going after free agents and signing them if Ross had fired Ireland and Sparano and hired, Harbaugh, Cowher, or Gruden.

My mouth was watering looking at this list of talent. It looks like everything we need will be there for the taking "IF", after the new coach signing fiasco we are still able to attract big names. I think I heard somewhere that a few of the OC candidates that we contacted refused to interview with us. The Sporano signing fiasco really gave us a black eye and I sure hope that the good FA's have short memories.
-
I think we can grab 1-2 premium talents, and 2-4 lesser talents.
Personally I would spend my big money on a TE this time around, either of the 3 of Miller, Lewis or Daniels. This is a weak TE draft, but a strong FA class.
I think we should resign Incognito and Garner, and then maybe look again to add a premium guy like Mankins or Nicks.
That means we then take a look at second tier talents.
If we go for a wide receiver, Jacoby Jones interests me as a big play guy, and he can also help our return teams as well. Mike Sims-Walker would be an interesting pickup as well.
At RB I have 0 interest in retaining either Ronnie or Ricky at this point. I would be interested in taking a look at Bush for the right price, and Jerome Harrison is a guy that interests me highly as well. Depending on his injury status and if his speed is still good, Norwood is a guy that I have liked previously, but he may be a question mark.
The one guy on D I might spend money on if he somehow made it to FA would be David Harris. Gives us another big time middle enforcer along with Dansby, and deprives the Jets of a major piece. I can also see us probing the Corner market. You just can never have to many of them these days. I love Brent Grimes but he may be in line for a big payout after a stellar season. Richard Marshall and Chris Houston are some mid level guys who could get a good look for the right offer I think.
In the draft we can focus our efforts on firstly getting a QB (not going to debate who here, though personally I like Newton). Secondly we look at either WR/RB - whichever didn't get hit in FA. Take a RT/G prospect or two in late rounds for development. Defensively, look for another CB or an ILB.
That would be my off season to do list.
-
I do not want any mid level guys. mankins and Nicks for oline, jacoby jones and the packers jones would be nice if we cannot get RICE who is the main guy I want. David Harris would be nice like you said. D. Williams and Foster or Bush would be fine. I dont know what the salary cap is gonna be so if we can get only Rice, Mankins, Woodley and D. Williams I would be as happy as a pig in s*it. -
-
-
This isn't Madden dude, we can't just expect to get the premier FA's all the time.
Also, these guys aren't all guaranteed to hit the open market. Many of the premiere talents will be resigned by their current teams. -
-
If we keep an aging RB you can bet they will keep Henne at the starting position and try to do a 'quick fix' on the team as opposed to a full overhaul. By the end of Feb we should have a feel but probably not much before that. I think Darrien Sproles will be a Dolphins before long along with a few JETS.
-
Dug this old thread up when I heard this week that Sidney Rice won't be hit with the transition tag (according to Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network ... yes I know, grain of salt lol) ... he is a guy I'd like to see in aqua & orange

Mankins was tagged a while ago, wonder why everybody missed it? -

If by some hand of fate we could obtain Holmes, Brad Smith, David Harris, Zach Miller, Jamaal Charles, and possibly Lutui, I'd be a happy camper.
-
Honestly what the Dolphins need in the WRs unit, I think you can pick up cheap by investigating Donte Stallworth or Laurent Robinson.
I think the Dolphins should pick up a 2nd Tight End in the Draft, but if not then a David Thomas would fit well as a versatile pass catching H-Back.
At running back I would target Michael Bush who seems primed to escape Oakland. I realize he is injury prone but the Dolphins have Pat Cobbs and Lex Hilliard, and they shouldn't be so afraid to use them. They can add one more name via the Draft and in today's Sun Sentinel I put forward a guy I feel is a perfect candidate to mix in with that group.
If the Dolphins want to participate in the free agent LB class at all, which is questionable, I would tagret an OLB. They already investigated Travis LaBoy and I think they were interested in him. I would follow up again and see if he's interested in leaving San Francisco, where he capped off a nice year. If not, then IF Cliff Avril truly becomes a free agent, I think you investigate him.
On the offensive line I think the guy you really have to investigate is Logan Mankins. That would be kind of the "it" signing for this free agency, along with a Michael Bush. I don't know if it's feasible. There's still a lot of he-said/she-said going on between he and the Pats. If that doesn't pan out, then Ryan Kalil is worth investigating if he makes it out of Carolina. He would definitely lead the way in an athletic overhaul of the OL unit.
I think that would pretty much do it for the Dolphins. Grab a Logan Mankins/Ryan Kalil, a Travis LaBoy/Cliff Avril, Michael Bush, and a David Thomas/Donte Stallworth/Laurent Robinson. Then you have to focus on re-signing your own guys, figuring out your QB position, and drafting young players to help you out.gunn34 and Stringer Bell like this. -
Let's say we did the following:
1. Traded down with Denver to acquire picks #36 and #46.
2. Drafted QB Ryan Mallett at #36.
3. Drafted LG John Moffitt at #46.
4. Drafted TE Virgil Green at #79.
5. Drafted OT Jah Reid in Round 4.
6. Drafted OLB Chris Carter in Round 5.
7. Drafted RB Johnny White in Round 6.
8. Drafted ILB Ben Jacobs in Round 7.
9. Drafted FB Anthony Sherman in Round 7.
10. Re-signed NT Paul Soliai.
11. Re-signed RB Pat Cobbs.
12. Re-signed OL Nate Garner.
13. Allowed free agent DE Tony McDaniel to walk.
14. Signed free agent OC Ryan Kalil.
15. Signed free agent RB Michael Bush.
16. Signed free agent WR Donte Stallworth.
That would be a busy off season but it would accomplish a lot. You would have made over the interior of the OL by adding John Moffitt and Ryan Kalil, getting Nate Garner back in the fold. John Jerry would have to earn his way back into the mix. Joe Berger would still be here to compete. Vernon Carey could continue his job but there would be no secret that Jah Reid would take it eventually. He adds fresh legs and significant run blocking to the mix, and he's a guy that actually did well getting to the second level in college.
At running back you would have Michael Bush, Pat Cobbs, Lex Hilliard and Johnny White, which is a really good mix of versatile role players. The Dolphins needed to not be afraid to use Lex Hilliard and Pat Cobbs more in 2010, but they sat them in favor of stiff-legged guys like Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams much the same way they continued to stick with guys like Jason Taylor and Joey Porter even though Cam Wake had the fresher legs and was much more productive on a per snap basis. I'm not saying Cobbs and/or Hilliard are the next Wake, but they have fresher legs and need the opportunity to earn more carries. Johnny White meanwhile, as you'll see in our Sun Sentinel piece later today, is a highly versatile player that reminds me of an Ahmad Bradshaw clone as a yard gainer and pass catcher, has potential as a blocker, and has a lot of experience on special teams and doing odd jobs. He'll be the Pat Cobbs in training. And as for Anthony Sherman, he would train on and attempt to win the job from Lousaka Polite in training camp. He's built low to the ground, and is very physical, which helps him earn his nickname "The Sherman Tank". He runs surprisingly well from a speed standpoint, short strider, and consistently shows soft hands and the ability to gain yards after the catch. He's a real brick top when it comes to lead blocking. At this point, Lou Polite has been in Miami three years and presents zero value as a pass catcher. He had one superb year as a lead blocker and two sub-mediocre years in that role. His best performance comes in short yardage situation, but at some point one has to wonder how much of that is due to the way the OL has been built to be big and good in short spaces. Who is to say an Anthony Sherman couldn't be just as effective in short spaces?
I really don't see how the WRs unit needs a transfiguration. The WRs don't need another $10 million a year guy, they need a QB and better play calling. You have three versatile guys that can all make plays. They need a tweak, don't use a cannon to kill a mosquito. Donte Stallworth is on his way back from time spent out of the game due to the DUI problem. He played a little late this year. He still has deep speed and ability that way, and that's what Miami needs...a ROLE player. Then at Tight End you pick up a versatile player like Virgil Green in the 3rd round and I think you're cooking on fine wine. He blocks extremely well for his size, especially out in space as an H-Back type blocker, but he also has experience on the line. He's very fluid out in space, not to mention FAST, natural catcher, keeps his balance after the catch, and can contribute fantastic plays once in a while. I think he's a steal in the 3rd round and would complement Anthony Fasano extremely well, rounding out a set of receiving options for our quarterbacks.
When I first looked at OLB Chris Carter, it was his game against the Cincinnati Bearcats. I was FLOORED at what I saw. The next Cam Wake. His speed around the edge and ability to get flexible and narrow at the bottom of his rush, work his way back to the quarterback, they were superb. Cincinnati threw everything they could at him to try and slow him down and it didn't work. He did not always have games like that. He DID beat the heck out of Gabe Carimi at the end of the 2009 season in their bowl game together, though. He looked a lot more natural in space playing linebacker than I would have expected in Orlando, and really I thought outplayed the faster and more heralded Dontay Moch at the position. He was still very rough around the edges in his reads and angles, don't get me wrong, but he showed a lot of potential. He's shown me that he works very hard to get better, as he worked real hard between the 2009 and 2010 seasons on his ability to come back to the QB from the bottom of his rush, and it showed. He also showed that working spirit at Shrine practices with his transition to a 4-3 OLB position that was totally unfamiliar to him. If you had to settle on one thing about Cam Wake that makes him who he is, aside from the explosive speed around the edge, it is his work-a-holic nature. All he does is work hard and try and get better, and it has pushed him to amazing heights. In Chris Carter I sense a young Cam Wake, a guy that is committed to working hard to get better, has that explosive edge speed and flexibility, but is still learning his way and needs coaching. I think if you acquire him, you've rounded out your OLBs unit nicely with players that can play in space and get to the passer.
Ben Jacobs was a guy that I initially was not impressed with, when I watched him play against Cincinnati, who spreads things out with four wide receivers making your job as a linebacker tough. What I saw the entire week of practice in Orlando really made me take a second look, because I saw this huge, physical monster that really bucked it up the middle physically and could make a lot of plays in the running game, but who also didn't look half-bad in coverage as he used his length to dominate receivers that way. I am glad I took a second look, because I think Draft people are missing a little on him at the moment. He reminds me a lot of Brandon Spikes, who is very physical on the interior and really uses his size and physicality to slam offensive linemen and try and affect the ground game that way. He was All-WAC first team this year, so he's not a come-from-nowhere guy. He is the kind of Ted Johnson type of player that you draft to really slam the middle of the formation and affect the play with his physicality on a two-down basis, but his speed is not at all the type that would make you shudder to think of him dropping back into coverage. He does a good job relating to the receiver with his length and physicality. You're not exactly getting studs in the 7th round but he would be a guy that actually excites me about the future a little.
The defensive line would miss Tony McDaniel, but in his place they get Jared Odrick returning from injury, and in training camp and during his Buffalo game I was very impressed with his ability to play in our system. He is a natural and gifted pass rush presence that will always work his way to the quarterback. Getting him back is like getting an extra 1st round pick. You have to return Paul Soliai, Miami has spent too much time developing him into the monster he is today, just to cut and run on him because he wants a measly stinking $6 million a year. That is really not a lot. Brandon Marshall makes $10 million a year, Karlos Dansby makes something like $8 or $9. Did Brandon Marshall or Karlos Dansby help us win as much as Paul Soliai did in 2010? Debatable. I say no.
I'm a little reluctant to make no additions to the secondary, but they're still young and they're now pretty full of talent. Returning guys like Sean Smith, Vontae Davis, Nolan Carroll, Chris Clemons and Reshad Jones, to combine with the likes of veterans Will Allen, Yeremiah Bell and Benny Sapp, with a bubble guy like Nate Ness...this should be a strength of the team, and I felt it was in 2010. Sometimes you have to learn to not fidget with a developing and promising unit just because you can.
As for quarterback, one move I left off the list is the possibility of re-signing Tyler Thigpen and trading Chad Henne. But, if I suggested that, I'm sure I'd be taking spit balls from all sides. I don't know if taking Ryan Mallett seems a bit unrealistic due to their seeming obsession with QB mobility. But, he already has a relationship with Chad Henne from their time together at Michigan, and that would help ease both players into the idea of competing with one another. Mallett is an explosive player that can create a touchdown from anywhere on the field with his physical talent, and that's not exclusive to his superb arm strength. His height, size and even his feet help him create opportunities for those big plays as well, and he has the natural temperament to look for them. I was not always high on him but two things changed for me. One, as I delved deeper, I got beyond the easy accusation that most people make about him that he doesn't do well with pressure. He actually manages very well against the blitz, and can beat it consistently with his superior talent as well as his experience making all the protection calls and adjustments at the line in Bobby Petrino's offense. And surprisingly, when I pulled out the scope of my studies to a wider number of games, isolating "pressure" plays and decisions, there was a lot more positive in there than I think people would think, a lot more instances of him rolling out and making superior throws on the run and under duress. Where Mallett will kill you is recognizing disguised defenses at times, and his tendency toward brain farts. Well, most of these guys do that. He does a lot more superb work for every unit ounce of "Bad Mallett" than most guys do. The second thing that changed for me is just the realization that 1) I have sought out a LOT of interviews of his looking for this reputed Malibu's Most Wanted sounding ignorant S.O.B. that slays babies with one hand while hitting a meth pipe with the other, and have yet to find anything but a pretty well-reasoned, deliberate speaker masked by a deep southern accent, and 2) Let's face it, continuing to watch guys like Michael Vick and Ben Rapistberger have success makes some of this off field stuff seem a LITTLE overblown. Let's pretend he did some cocaine at Michigan or Arkansas. Well, you STILL have guys that will swear they've seen Marino doing coke at Pittsburgh. Does he still do it? What does he have to say about it? That's what would concern me. Otherwise the player I saw on the field was a guy that concerned himself with getting the details right and was a little hard on offensive teammates at times, because they NEEDED someone to be hard on them. That Arkansas offensive line and receivers unit was the most undisciplined bunch of idiots I've seen. The offensive line couldn't hold their water through a changed protection call or audible at the line to save their lives. The receivers, talented though they were, regularly ran the wrong routes, regularly didn't come back to the quarterback, and regularly dropped easy passes. There's one scene that really encapsulates it, I forget during which game, but after a play the offense is supposed to be huddling, and there are two offensive linemen turned toward the crowd pumping them up and acting like idiots, like this is the WWE rather than a football game, to where Mallett had to grab them both by the facemask and jerk them hard back to the huddle. Really watching the unit closely for a long stretch of games, I'm suddenly reminded why I disliked Bobby Petrino so much at Louisville. I had forgotten, but his offensive units were ALWAYS sloppy like this. The offense was always well-designed but never well taught and the unit had zero discipline. How much of that can you pin on Ryan Mallett when this is a trait that seems to follow Bobby Petrino (whose NFL treachery would make Nick Saban blush) around wherever he goes, and when Mallett can clearly be seen at times trying to fight against the tide?gunn34 likes this. -
Resigning some of our own guys should be priority #1. (McD and Soliai)
As far as mid level FA signings go, I kind of feel this way.
Mid level signings = Mid level players = mid level play = mid level results = mis level draft picks every year.
That only works if you have the coaches to coach them up. Sparano and his team of assistants has lost my confidence as that type of coach. -
I don't see how the Panthers will let Kalil walk. Mankins isn't moving either and if he does, it won't be cheap - not worth it.
I don't see Mallett falling to #36, unless these rumors are true...which I doubt they are. I still see him as a top 15-25 pick, and possibly top 10.
I like the Moffit pick and I kinda like the Virgil Green pick. As long as we get a top 3-5 TE in this year's draft, I will be fine.
After that, I think the draft is very boring and useless almost. You have us drafting zero playmakers and signing zero playmakers in free agency. How do you expect us to move the ball down the field? In rounds 2-5 there are going to be a ton of WRs that can spread the field and tons of breakaway threat RBs. I don't see how we can pass up any of those guys to draft a bunch of LBs and offensive linemen.
I'm not really understanding your philosophy with offensive line. Last year, when healthy our line was great in pass protection. It is also a given, that it is better to keep a group of guys together on the line, rather than keep shuffling and mixing around. So, why draft 2 guys fairly high and sign another in free agency? I think we would be fine with going with: Long-Pouncey or Moffit-Berger-Jerry-Carey.
I guess I wouldn't mind Michael Bush, but I don't think he is worth it for a few reasons: 1. He has never started a full season in the NFL. 2. I would assume he is going to command a decent sized contract to be a starter somewhere. 3. He wouldn't provide us with explosive and playmaking ability. He's 245 LBS.
Do we really need a FB? I know you have us taking one in the 7th round, and I know nothing about the guy...but have we given up on Lousaka already? Why not just draft more skill positions with potential or Special Teamers?
I wouldn't be mad if we signed Stallworth, unless he is the only WR we go after this off season. Stallworth doesn't bring much to the table and would almost be a worthless addition.
