JUST answered a caller. The question was what Dom Capers was doing. Brandt repsonds by saying, "he is a very good coach and a great defense coordinator, [Is what it amounts too:001_rolleyes:], if you remember, 2 years ago they had a great defense and they had a very (stressing very) good defense this year. The defense wasnt the reason they lost all those games, it was offense".
I just dont know which dolphins defense Mr. Brandt was watching but, wow!

Another I like everyone comment from Gil.. I like him but Dom Capers was a good defensive coordinator in the past. The Defense had players (not AAA) but we have been worse in past years and got better performance from them..
Whatever went wrong it's over... Im happy that the broom cleaned house no one gets a free ride anymore... I like Gil, but not this comment... -
Wasn't the Phins' run defense giving up like 160 on the ground all year or was it just for a few games?
-
I seriously question the football knowledge of anyone who thinks that the 2007 Dolphins possessed a good defense.
-
our d-line was awful
no coach was really to blame, chalk it up to bad drafting -
Wait I take that back, dribble doesn't deserve to be associated with what Brandt said. -
He was be related to Capers some how, absolutely no way someone could watch 15 minutes of a Miami game and convince me that defense wasn't the problem. They just got shredded all year, especially on 3rd down. With that comment Gil lost all credibility and should be shut down for speaking jibberish

Good lord did someone who is receiving a salary to comment on professional football really say our defense was good last year? Seriously that is just assanine. -
The coaching was horrible...Yeah, we had alot of injuries, but Buffalo had more injuries than we did and their defense played much better than ours and they finished 7-9 -
what color is the sky in your world? -

Much like Dom, the game has passed Gil by...
-
The Dolphins D was bad this year. I think it was more of the interior of the line than anything. Channing Crowder for as many plays as he makes he's not there as a run stopper as he gets washed out of the play at times.

I read this post before going to work last night. I found it interesting because I knew Gil Brandt wasn't as ill informed as this post made him out to be. Do not misunderstand as I have found that most of the radio hosts have not watched much Dolphins football this year. Some of them have announced a Dolphins game and some have viewed at least two games that I know of from all my listening. THEY ALL KNOW LEAGUE STATISTICS THOUGH.
I took a break from my normal 6-7 hours of Sirius NFL radio last night. They replay three radio shows every night. I only listened to about 3 hours of it last night. When I come across the Gil Brandt episode I recognized this call immediately. I listened intently for Brandt's response.
This much you got right.
Brandt did not say.....
"He is a very good coach and a great defense coordinator. If you remember 2 years ago they had a great defense and their defense was not that (stressing "that") bad this year. Their defense was not the reason they lost so much. It was their lack of production on offense that killed them."
Correctly cited, how far off the mark were his comments? -
FYI-I didnt say i believed what he said.
Obviously, if youre a miami fan you know his quote was completely wrong.
And also, under normal circumstances I think Brandt is one of the best in the business.. But yesterday he was one of the worstLast edited: Jan 11, 2008 -
FYI2 - My communication skills are as good as they come. Ask my college professors and debate teams -
Zod vs. Optimus Prime. this is going to get good.
-
 Optimus prime defeated megatron, who can fly too and is a big *** gun

Miami's defense was not THAT bad. That statement is correct. Of course the defense was not up to top ten standards but this is the reality for most teams in the NFL. This team was not being blown out by 30 points. The defense was getting stops and the offense would put them back on the field. In reality, the defense was average. It was nothing special. It was nothing horrid (in contrast to league play).
So when Gil Brandt says that the defense was not THAT bad in 2007 you have to understand that he is not looking from a Miami fans perspective. He is making a general observation from a competitive standpoint.
This DEFENSIVE unit was not 1-15 bad. This TEAM was 1-15 bad.......... -
I must say.... I think Zod said pretty much the same thing you said. Maybe a few ands and buts are different, but all in all the same.
PS. Zod flies too...... and shoots lasers from his eyes. ohhhhhhh. -

I have to add this just for the sake of being genuine. I could not find fault in Dom Capers scheme this year. I could not fault him because I think I would have taken the same conservative approach.
This defense was porous up front out of the gate. It was porous as compared to previous years as a result of the lack of investment in the defensive line. This was documented through the roster changes prior to camp.
I think the last "starting" free and strong safety count was up to six different players.
Cornerback injuries......
Linebacker injuries......
In other words, it was easy to make it through the first level of the defense due to the original roster movement in the offseason. When the runner reaches the second level, a perennial pro bowler was missing at linebacker after game five. The linebacker count went up to at least three starters out for at least one game this year. Then the runner reaches the third level of the defense where he would find the third person chosen for the position. As a matter of fact, he wasn't even chosen. He was picked up off the street midseason.
The issue with this defense was a lack of talent. It wasn't Dom Capers. -

Capers made plenty of questionable calls during the season the main one playing Porter at DE for 4 or 5 or how ever many games it was, and in essence putting him a place to fail. Also, if he was a good talent evaluator Allen would have been on the field long before the London game where he came in and just made plays.
Now you have to ask yourself how much of the defense was actually a function of Saban, or Capers, nothing this year told me it was capers -

There is one fact that you should know about football. It's true in all of football from Pee Wee to the NFL. "Your best defense is a good offense." -

You can go both ways with that argument -
