I can't pinpoint the moment, nor the character's death that made me step back from the show and start seeing the pattern of "Everybody dies except Lannisters. Ever." Once I saw that, it ceased to appeal to me viscerally (so necessary for a show like this) and it became something much less serious, like a drinking game or just something you watch while you surf. Like I said; I'm in it now for the **** and ***, and for the gore.
Darth Vader wouldn't have become a legendary villain if the empire didn't strike back... Gotta build the guys with the black hats up or their fall isn't nearly as interesting. Storytelling 101. I also love how the show doesn't let the good guys win just for the sake of winning. They've gotta earn it. So far, the Starks are 0-3 and they have themselves to blame for it. I also happen to love the Lannister's, so maybe my view is clouded. Tywin is incredible (best character introduction ever) and steals every scene he's in. Jaime is gold. Everything he does is entertaining. Which is bizarre, since I hated his guts in season 1. I don't know if I've ever 180'd on a character like that before... Tyrion is the god of **** and wine. Plus, he's got Bronn. Cersei is Machiavelli if he had unstable women emotions... Joffrey is king of Westeros and of the ***holes. And their stories with the Tyrell's is interesting and has provided some good scheming so far. Margery, and her grandma/the Queen of Thorns are awesome. Plus, we've got the Martells of Dorne rolling in, ready to pay all kinds of debts. I honestly think the show would be less entertaining without them, by far. The Starks (outside of Arya) are kind of boring. But to each his own, I guess. Natalie Dormer is kind of strange looking all the way around. She's shaped quite... interestingly. Even her boobs look like they're growing out from the side. Not ugly by any means. She's definitely attractive, but there is something off putting about her. I'll take Clarke all day erry day, with a side of everyone else.
Seeing Jaime is lengthy scenes while he was held prisoner or with Brianne made me really like his character. 1st season we primarily saw him as the spoiled brat who didn't get his hands dirty. Now that he finally has, he has become a really likable character. Also, he has a conscience unlike the rest of his family.
Ftr, Jaime has done nothing but get his hands dirty. He killed the mad king, pushed bran out the window and dueled Ned stark....all BEFORE he was held as a prisoner. Also, Tyrion has a conscious too.
My favorite charactor is Tyrion. I love how he outwits everyone except his father. I can't believe they are going to replace him with a new actor.
As a point of clarification Tyrion is NOT being replaced. Peter Dinklage's portrayal of him is the gold standard of the show. There was an April Fool's out there that this was going to happen but it was debunked.
Started the first book yesterday. Let's see how this goes. I don't like watching movies/shows before reading books, but too late for that. So far books 1 reads exactly like season 1.
You guys better watch the episodes as they air. Considering how big this show has gotten, and how every media outlet wouldn't shut up about the Red Wedding after it aired, you'll be in dangerous territory to be spoiled if you DVR it or whatever.
Differences will start appearing in books 2 and 3. The TV series killed off a character returning in The Winds of Winter, and created new characters to be Theon's sister and Robb's wife. You're also going to get much more backstory in the books, as well as a lot of foreshadowing. The biggest difference is that the TV series ignores Rhaegar entirely, even though he appears to be fairly important.
Interesting... I have to imagine DVD/Blueray help out a ton too, although the article kinda brushes it off. If they sell 500,000 at $60 bucks a pop, that's 30 million right there. And from what I've read in the past about their DVD/Blueray sales, they probably sell far more than half a million. When the producers said they wanted 7 seasons, HBO was quick to point out they wouldn't mind more. Certainly, they don't mind the 60-70 million dollar budget.
You'll binge read through five books and then wonder if number six is going to be published anytime this decade. Well that's my experience at least.
I've always argued that pirating doesn't hurt the networks as much as they protest, a good show will often make more money from pirating that it would without it, many GoT downloaders likely will go on to purchase boxsets of shows they'd not even show the least bit of interest in if they hadn't downloaded it first - the old word of mouth marketing method. It's what has always annoyed me about networks when they just link 1m downloads to 1m lost payments, the vast majority of those downloaders wouldn't have paid to subscribe whether they could download or not.
Spoiler I was hoping for a more unpleasant death for him, but, he is dead. I was kind of surprised. It was only a matter of time, but this soon? Damn. I haven't read books and as of now my two suspects are Margerie and Prince Oberon
Spoiler Oberyn. I'll say this, the chain of events is a little complicated and the book take a while to spell it out. There's also a dangling plotline from Season 1 that the TV series should hopefully wrap up soon.
Spoiler So earlier on this week some guys shows up on Reddit commenting in non GOT threads with the username Joffreydiesthisweek. I was hoping it was a joke, but figured it wasn't. Which sucks because rather than be surprised by it, I just spent the whole episode waiting for the inevitable.
If you've seen tonight's episode: Spoiler holy **** that was great... you had to know something was going to happen. It was a wedding afterall How does the Imp get blamed for this though? He knew Joffrey was going to make a mockery of him with the whole wine and goblet bit? Come now... that's a bit ridiculous... as for who is the culprit? look no further than the former knight that gave Sansa her necklace... has to be... he told her as Joffrey was dying that she needed to come with him immediately. He knew something was up. Did anyone else have any meat pie?
why do we use spoiler tags to discuss the episode that just aired? I'm not doing that... After Lady Olena is done petting and touching Sansa, she reaches and grabs the necklace. And clearly has something in her hand as she pulls it away. Now look to the right, the necklace is missing a piece. Given the cutaway shots of Olena glaring at Tyrion and the cup, I think we've got our killer. In addition to the terrible "Help the king!" acting job. Not to mention the same man who gives her the necklace (Dontos) is the same one to usher her away.
Show Related: Spoiler Even if it was him, who commissioned his services? He is a simpleton, a pawn, and has nothing to gain....well except his freedom I guess, but others have way more to gain with Joffrey's death.
Spoiler Never said he did. I'm correcting spelling, not naming the culprit. I know exactly who did it and how.
